  • In this video, I want to talk a little bit about Ironweed. I likely have New York Ironweed, but Tall Ironweed is a very similar plant. Tall Ironweed typically gets taller than New York, can handle more shade, has slightly different blooms, and the native range is different. I hope this video is helpful when looking for general information about Ironweed. This plant grows in fields often, alongside goldenrods and asters. It also pairs well with Joe Pye Weed and Frostweed, depending on the site.
Ironweed is a host plant to butterflies and moths. In my area, it's a host to the American Lady Butterfly and the Parthenice Tiger Moth.

Are you referring to the olive green bird? I thought it was a Tennessee Warbler. Would you take a look at those and see what you think? I've never seen the ruby-crowned here with red on its head. TN warbler page: www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/tennessee_warbler

I found some super tall iron weed one year on the edges of Madison Wisconsin. They were 8' and taller. Early October. Hundreds of monarchs on them. While standing next to (I'm 6'3") a group of them I barely reached the purple plates. Then the monarchs came and landed anywhere they could, even on me. Amazing!
I planned to collect seeds in a couple months, but a construction company had other plans on the almost 40 acre lot. Not one was left to stand again.
Lesson learned, but I havent found a stand like that again.

Sad that they demolished that treasure of a place...but I'm so glad you got to experience it before it was gone. So much habitat loss. This is why we try to create habitat in our own yards and on farms, too. Thanks for watching and commenting.
