    I moved to Arkansas a year ago and discovered this plant. If you need a privacy fence, this stuff will grow huge and tall. It requires no extra care, and you can harvest and plant the berries for more plants. I love this plant!

    Lol, my family has been eating it for 100 years. They all have lived into their 90s. We must be part bird.😅

    I grew up eating this stuff from our fields.
    Cut no more than 18 inches tall 12 inches better.
    Boil and drained 3 times.
    Literally everyone ate poke in the spring.
    One of our dogs ate poke berries every year.
    I grew one one year by way of watering and fertilizer that grew to around 20 feet
    The root goes many feet into the ground.
    There where thousands of these plants on our place.
    Education of children is better than anything when it comes to poisonous plants.
    But of course we were raised free range.

    I'm from Oklahoma and we've eaten this since I was thigh high to a grasshopper... There's actually an annual pokeberry festival for eating this very plant.

    I am currently in Romania and there is tons of it here. I know it is native to NA but it apparently exists in parts of Europe as well.

    The ripe berries can be used to stop arthritis. You can only take one berry a day and no longer than one week according to the Folk medicine of Mammoth Cave area. And a salad can also be made according to Southern Appalachian Mountain cookin. 1974 copy

      @@PaUpPi I'm currently using, as needed, dried poke berries. I have more than enough to get me through to the upcoming season. Eight to ten at a time, swallowed whole with water. No crunching. It seems to work just as well as the fresh ones. I dry them in a brown paper bag. It takes not an exceedingly long time. This year I froze a supply of the fresh ones and dried a bunch in brown paper bags. My latest drying ones are the formerly frozen ones.

    • @PaUpPi

      @TonyFreeman-LocoTonyF I will have to dry some this year. I have typically just frozen them. That should make them not stain as much too.

    I am planning to start a couple of patches. I would appreciate a review of peer review papers on the use of poke weed. I have seen a claim of two basic classes of toxins relative to solubility and heat sensitivity. The claim is one is soluble in boiling water and use a lot of water to ensure appropriate extraction and the 2nd class are heat labile at boiling temperatures. Suggests boiling at high attitudes might be insufficient.
    Most of what you presented seems to be from public advisories and I want to know more.

    I put 20 poke berries into a jar with one cup of apple cider vinegar smash them all up and pour through a strainer to catch all the seeds. Now you have your juice of the berries in the apple cider vinegar pour one cup of organic honey into the juice store in the fridge and take 1 tsp when you are sick it is an amazing herb for wellness. You should always put just a small amount on the inside of your wrist for 15 minutes or so to make sure you are not allergic to the herb. Do this test for all herbs before using them. I am 71 years old and only use herbs for my good health I use no meds of any kind at this time. I make a Poke Root tincture also I have never used gloves ever.

    I live in SE Georgia, USA and I have two of these growing near my house. Today, I took a look at the larger one, which now is over 7 feet tall, and it's only June, 8th! I'm going to leave it alone to see how tall it will grow, and let the birds have their fill of the berries.

    I eat 3-4 ripe berries a day (while they are in season, which is now, Oct 8). The seeds (which are 10 per berry), are the most toxic of the berry. The toxins are: oxalic acid, pokeweed mitogen (including phytolacain), and phytolaccotoxin. I am currently putting up a poke berry tincture, using 100 proof alcohol, because soon the full plant will die with the frost.
    This is NOT for everyone, but if you have arthritis or several other ailments that poke berries are know to help, research it thoroughly before trying.

    We harvest the leaves only, cook it and dump the water three times. It's is Absolutely delicious. We leave it growing in our yard but cut back all the flowers to prevent "berries." Kids, birds, and raccoons will eat them and nobody wants that!

    I've been looking at videos on Poke for years. I ate it once using the three boil method. Here's my take: There are easier things to harvest, and prepare, like lamb's quarter, so go with those. I'd eat Poke, but only if other things weren't available.

      @@crystalgillan4225 I've since made a decision to harvest seeds from an established plant in my yard and plant a patch of it. I intend to harvest it like asparagus when it is very young. I hear that's the key to taste and safety.

    • @BiologyProfessor
      @BiologyProfessor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Apparently the berries taste kind of soapy… so you wouldn’t want to eat more than one! Kids might keep eating despite the soapy taste though, and that would be dangerous.

    Can brushing up against the leaves on accident cause bad issues or just a skin rash?

    • @Dale_youngblood
      @Dale_youngblood ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It can cause a rash for some people just by touching it. I cut one down in my yard and didn't have any issues. Just like some people have a reaction to poison ivy and some don't it just depends on the person.
