Two years later this motor is going strong th-cam.com/users/postUgkxBZWgzfpS2Jj7JqIHyaSZjyVHNUgCKCBf Just uploaded a video of it after 2 years. We use it probably a dozen days each year on our small raft.-original review- We got this motor the other day and tested it out. I don't have anything to compare it to, but it seems good to me. It has all the features advertised - the motor housing is metal. We will see how it performs longer term and I will revise this review if needed. Some initial observations:- Good thrust, moves our boat around really well- It comes with a circuit breaker but no switch - so there's no way to kill the motor other than yanking the connection off the battery. I installed an inline switch.- The mount bracket is plastic and I worry it might break- There are a number of plastic parts that I worry about, but the most important ones are metal or some kind of composite
Good honest review. These asia made products will hold up if cared for properly. With two stroke engines that oil/fuel ratio needs to be just right. Id rather clean fouled plugs than re-ring a motor
Hi from Australia. We’re in lockdown atm and I also have a 52cc 2stroke outboard weedeater that I haven’t unboxed yet. Nice review, I was about to buy a larger heavier outboard but decided against it if I use a plastic Oldtown branded kayak.
Looking at the rear of the motor there are two screws on the right side of the lower unit. The oil comes in a plastic squeeze tube, motor must be upright when you fill it from the BOTTOM hole up.when full put top screw in first then remove tube. Don't relax pressure on squeeze tube or you suck the oil back out.
Be careful with the handle swivel. Mine was made of cheap cast aluminum and shattered at the handle end of the swivel while using it. I modified the handle it gets my canoe flying across the lake to the point I'm doing wheelies. Make sure the lower unit has oil in it.
I have an 18' Coleman canot that had that problem of "porposing" up especially in a headwind. You should do what everyone does to make your canoe more stable on the water. Shift weight towards the bow to keep the bow from popping up because if wave or wind action! Same goes for boats that do not plane easily. Shifting weight forward balances your craft better, gains some speed, and becomes a safer craft!
Nice review, I know it's loud but is the noise level unbearable?? And can it go slow enough to troll lures or is it like an idle to wide open type thing, thanks
Ok it is quite loud and I would not recommend it for trolling lures. It's got a clutch so you would have to give it decent throttle to move forward and it is not great at being quiet. It sounds like a weedwacker honesty.
@@PatOutdoors I mean I'm not too awful worried about the sound, Im a fabricator so I can rilun a pipe from the exhaust to the water, and yea it does have a cintrifugal clutch, a lighter spring will make it grab sooner, I've also seen some ppl delete the clutch spring
I enjoy it it has some play in the cable throttle itself tried to adjust it but even wide open throttle it seems to run rough I just use it half way it seems to run better and smooth
Anything will last longer with constant maintenance. The tie breaker for me is that centrifugal clutch in the leg. Across the board, everyone I have talked to about Chinese made outboards below 5hp is that centrifugal clutch wearing out every season (with steady use). Occasional use may let that clutch last two seasons, but usually less. The earlier outboards had a "Chinglish" owners manual that wasn't very understandable which caused many outboards to not last very long. I know that if I decide to buy one, it will be two cycle with forward, neutral, and reverse gears and above 6hp for longevity. These motors will last much longer when they are not strained too much. I once ran a 15hp Evinrude, and later twin 40hp Johnsons on my Alumacraft and I learned that the extra weight made for longer and more useful lives for those engines. Chinese made outboards are "extra" light, which means they sacrificed weight and longevity for "convenience".
Yeah.. I replaced the clutch as well on this one on a later video. Really just got it as an experiment since the price made more sense than constantly renting a trolling motor and battery from my local park for $48 for a 6 hour period.
i am so sad to hear this... i just bought 3.5HP this (product is on board, i am taiwanese my native language is chinese) and you said about clutch problem i guess its nomal condition cuz this engine only 3.5hp so driver usually full throttle working so clutch wear is very soon...even made in japan also have this problem (my chinlish hope anybody can understand lol
Place this motor on m Bris 12.5 ft and worked great in saltwater. You have to get it to the highest speed 5 to get it moving when the tide is up. But on calmer waters 3-4 works good for some speed. Easy to use.
Just shairing. I have not tested it yet on the water. I just brought an 12.5 raft pontoon boat. I have an old trolling motor. Only has slow and fast. I put on an variable speed. Yet, my point. I bought 2 20ah AMG sealed Marine grade friendly batteries. Hooked them up my way. An 20 watt self contained panel. So far running test time out of an 5gal bucket. Endless. At night not at full speed. 40% power. The double battery hookup is simple. Two battery 12v hookup as normal. Then make an X with the wires. One negative on one battery and the positive on the other. Then opposite with the solar. Yet I am watching this on shopping for an small fuel boat motor. Small electric trolling motors. Just hookup an 20 watt solar panel. 50 watts medium. 100 watts large. Then use your trolling motor as long as you want to.
to make it quite just attach auto hose to muffler to it run it in down in water by front of propeller if you want it go faster than change pit on propeller im sure you feel it take little longer rev up
I'm looking for something like this for a backup motor in case there's a problem with my main 9.9hp Mercury. I'm removing the mast from a 1990 Macgregor 26 sailboat and planning on just motoring it. I feel more comfortable with some kind of backup even if it's slow on a boat this size. Price sounds good. My thoughts.
I thought about buying one to use in lakes that wont allow my 40hp and as a back up incase the big motor dies or quits..or in shallow water when you rather not take a chance messing up a big motor
They're actually little deep they're actually decent motors but remember the prop that comes with the motor is a standard prop it's not a work prop it's not a speed prop but it is interchangeable so here is a good suggestion take it to your local marina and have them put a prop that matches that style motor got to give you a little bit more pitch and that'll up your speed and also save you on your gas consumption but the prop is interchangeable I do suggest that you do change the prop
Considering buying one of these now, how often do you use the motor and how well has I held up since you made this video? Thanks for your time, I found this very insightful!
Thank you! I'm actually in the middle of moving homes at the moment, so I have not gotten a chance to take it out in months, but I've used it a total of 8 times so far.

I like your review. I have an old Ark. Traveler that has/had an 8hp evinrude, but it hasn't run in years, don't know if it will. Do you think one of these little motors would push my boat good enough to fish out of...I am not a speed freak so if it would push mine at 8 mph I would be happy.
Thanks! I don't think they would be the same quality as an Evinrude to be honest. It's simply just a good starter motor to put you around 7-8 MPH on a 12 ft jon boat. It's been good for a year so far, but I've had to check all the bolts periodically to make sure it's all still torqued to spec. One main downside with this motor is the sound. It's a small 2-stroke so it almost sounds like a weed-wacker and not very quiet.. So not great to use as a trolling motor for fishing.
Nothing like bolting a weed whacker to your transom. I was considering one of these as a kicker until I heard one run. For the money it’s great but I couldn’t deal with the pissed off hornet sound for long. Wearing ear pro while fishing is just a no. However, whatever gets you out on the water is a plus…
You make a very good point. I just have fun putting around in a jon boat with it. But when it comes to fishing.. it definitely does not help me because it's loud af lol
Have been looking for a motor like this for my kayak thanks for the video how long did it last long term if you had it that long I would greatly appreciate the feedback
I haven't had it for too long, only 4 months so I'm not sure how long it would actually last. But I'm sure with proper maintenance, it could go a few years. I would say it's a bit heavy to use for a kayak, but I'm trying that myself also. Just got me a kayak recently!
I have a 4-stroke engine (similar to the one in the video), attached to a small inflatable boat (2.3 x 1.3 meters). The maximum speed is 5 kmh (3.2 mph) and at average speed somewhere around 2.5-3 kmh. I think it's too slow. Are these the operating parameters or does my engine have a fault? Thank you!

I did.. and the Seahawk3 definitely needs to be modified to take the weight and power. The standard Intex mount is too weak. I'm still working on the Seahawk platform and transom mount. I just got distracted with my kayak project recently.
Actually yes I did. But then I ended up NOT using the choke and it started right away. Never used the choke since and haven't had a problem starting it cold or hot. Also noticed the boat ran at 5MPH during the first 20-30 minutes of the day and it just kept getting a little faster as it broke in more.
@@PatOutdoors I got mine working I had to replace the spark plug. I haven’t had mine running for more than 30 minutes at a time because I only have it on a small farm pond. Did you have any trouble with water getting in the gear oil in the lower unit?
No I have not had any issues with the lower unit. I have only used this motor for one 4-hour day though. I will continue to monitor for any unusual wear as I use it more.
A friend of mine ended up buying it from me when I was 80% finished with it (go busy with work at the time.) It was a bit small for me also.. But it's now complete, being saved for his son to grow into. I'm working on another MTB project soon, just collecting more parts.

I just watched one guy with triple outboards. 1.5 gallons a minute!!! So an hour ride would cost $300. Not counting the truck fuel. That's why I'm looking at the small engines and small boats.
@@PatOutdoors Yes, a Johnson or Evinrude from 1965-1979. Or, even better a Johnson or Evinrude 3hp. Those models have the gas tank built in and are far quieter than that weed wacker in this video. Adding oil to the gas mixture only applies to 2-Stroke engines. Regular 4-Stroke gas motors don't need oil mixed in the fuel.
@@PatOutdoors do u got to add oil each time you refuel ? Or only at the beginning?
@@PocketBeast1243r
every-time you refuel
How is it going now is it still working?
Still running! But I had to change to clutch a few months back
did you try it on your seahawk 3
I did.. and the Seahawk3 definitely needs to be modified to take the weight and power. The standard Intex mount is too weak. I'm still working on the Seahawk platform and transom mount. I just got distracted with my kayak project recently.
Does a loud engine like that scare fish lol
How much Indian rupees price
Did you have problems starting it the first time?
Ayos na Kuya
I use a light Mariner 2.5 hp for decade .
Never have any problem . Those engine look slow .
2,6 hp??
I can't find this model anywhere for sale. It's 2023 and I want one dam it. Help!?
Here you go: amzn.to/40DMDrF
Need ear plugs if you’re gonna be at the throttle very long. Anybody know a way to quiet those down a little?
LOL! I totally agree, one major downside to this thing. Been over a year and I haven't found a solution yet!
Keep an eye on the clutch. It slipps almost every time on these
Do you suggest I replace it periodically?
@@PatrickKasilag i removed the spring in mine. Clutch coating was gone after first two rides.
What happen to the diamondback
A friend of mine ended up buying it from me when I was 80% finished with it (go busy with work at the time.) It was a bit small for me also.. But it's now complete, being saved for his son to grow into. I'm working on another MTB project soon, just collecting more parts.
I thought you quit TH-cam thank god you came back
Is there no reverse?
For this price range, unfortunately no gas-powered outboards would have a reverse. An electric trolling motor would though, but it's much slower.
10 MPH =16KMH. 12 MILES AND HOUR IS 19.2 KILOMETERS AND HOUR, so the boat speed claim was accurate
Surprisingly, it was accurate. I just had low hopes at first
@@PatOutdoors MPH and kmh can be confusing sometimes lol . It happens
Bs
Great motor if you want to suffer from tinnitus as soon as possible!... 😉
Hahaha this is very true though.. One of the main reasons I want to get a 4-stroke soon
Your links under the vid are no longer good. Just tried them. Take care, spring is here!
Good, but I'll have two in case one fail....
Lol, might not be a bad idea. Can't have too high expectations for this price.
Top👍👍
Why didn’t you consider a 4 stroke engine
I am considering one still. Looking at a Tohatsu at the moment. I just wanted to see what $230 outboard from eBay could do lol.
Not bad for the money!
If they send you one that works?
God bless whoever is making n selling these out boards so poor people ca also enjoy the water too, as I was really cheesed off with boats with treble 300HP or ever 6 outboard engines that cost more to run a day than a family spends for a week ops more Likely a month tie for poor working people to have mome pleasures too
Ebay
I just watched one guy with triple outboards. 1.5 gallons a minute!!! So an hour ride would cost $300. Not counting the truck fuel. That's why I'm looking at the small engines and small boats.
@@WayneThePreacher How right you are mate GL
Get yourself a 6hp eventually it would be perfect
Do you have a specific one you'd like to recommend?
@@PatOutdoors Yes, a Johnson or Evinrude from 1965-1979. Or, even better a Johnson or Evinrude 3hp. Those models have the gas tank built in and are far quieter than that weed wacker in this video. Plus they look cooler and weigh 33 pounds, are constructed using nearly zero plastic and will last a lifetime.
Where did you get that motor I want to buy it
Updates?
Sorry I haven't been able to take it out lately. Looking forward to doing so in a few days!
👍👍👍
I have tried 6 different apps most of them are all wrong
