Plenty of offshore and deep sea fishing charters out of Wollongong and Shellharbour as well as Port Kembla or hire a boat and gear on the lake. Wollongong is all about water and beach activities combined with endless walking trails through rainforest and eucalyptus forests along the escarpment. Illawarra is Sydney's hidden paradise.

100% Wollongong for communication and friendliness but Newcastle for costs. I’m familiar with both.

I studied 2 semesters at Uni of Wollongong in 96/97. I was far to busy to do a lot of these things, also I think not all of these existed in 1996.

As a Wollongong resident the best things to do here are
    1. smoke meth
    2. do cocaine
    3. do mdma

Things to do in Wollongong. Number One. Get out of Wollongong because it sucks here. It's too noisy and the people are unfriendly, paranoid idiots. I have encountered many people that say there is no place like it, and not in a good way, because the people there are weird. Even psychologists say that.
The people are afraid of everything. They see a tiger in every bush. If you stare at them longer than five seconds they think you want to bash them up. Which of course in most cases with most people, that simply isn't true. There are a hundred places just like it that are quieter and with more friendlier people.
The city is undergoing major expansion and development but if you travel through it you'll notice for a small city it is quite noisy. Also if you go to the mall you might encounter someone trying to sell you drugs, or get you to sell them drugs, or some bludger wanting money off you and if you don't give it to them they'll abuse you.
The town has certainly changed since the 80s where there was no mall like today, but since the 90s there have been an increase influx of undesirables, junkies and bludgers because of that mall. Furthermore, Wollongong is nothing special other than its low crime rate which makes it a mostly safe city, however as I've said, it's nothing special regarding tourist attractions and it would be better to save your money and do your research and go elsewhere in Australia, where you'll meet friendlier people and have a better time.
Here the snobs and paranoids wouldn't give you the time of day or help you out if you got lost if their lives depended on it, they would ignore you as if you didn't exist. And there's a lot of them. I have encountered many people who live there and they say they want to get out too, the city is nothing special with attractions or anything.
