  • There are currently around 5,000 professional footballers in Britain, but incredibly not one of them has come out publicly as gay. Amal Fashanu, niece of Justin Fashanu, the only ever openly gay British professional, goes on a mission to discover why no gay player has followed in her uncle's boots in over twenty years. Witnessing the typical chants from opposing fans on the terraces at Brighton, Amal can immediately see why gay players will not put their heads above the parapet. But one of Britain's most famous gay football fans, Matt Lucas, tells her that the problem extends beyond the fans.
Max Clifford, who reveals he has helped several Premiership stars keep their homosexuality secret in order to preserve their careers, goes further by insisting that the mentality of most people in and around the game remains in the Dark Ages. When Amal finally negotiates some access to straight premiership stars - from the Millwall dressing room - she learns that attitudes amongst many footballers may not be as bad as feared.
The Premiership's most controversial and outspoken player, Joey Barton, who like Amal has a gay uncle, expresses 'pity' for his fellow professionals who lack the courage to speak out on the subject, but blames the game's homophobia on some of the 'archaic figures' who run the game. Amal also gains access to a professional game official prepared to come forward and meet her to discuss life as a gay man inside the game, but the politics of the game prevent him.
Amidst these fascinating revelations about football's last taboo, Amal becomes embroiled in a deeply personal journey. For the first time she is exposed to the full truth about her family's darkest secrets.

There should be a statue of Justin Fashunu on his hometown.

There's a campaign to get a statue of him in Norwich outside Carrow road celebrating his goal of the season, we can donate and hopefully will serve as a powerful reminder for what kind of culture and who we include in football and greater society

Thank you for downloading this documentary. Very very interesting.
And what a lovely girl she is. Justin would be very proud.
Shame about her father. I thought he might have changed his views, but clearly he is still up his own arse.

I find it quite strange that two of the biggest industries have polar opposite views on homosexuality. The British music industry has produced some of the most successful pop artists in a generation mostly have been gay and have all bought us magical music moments and songs that have shaped our lives and then football which is the polar opposite. I truly believe that the camaraderie inside a dressing room between players wouldn’t be an issue, most footballers couldn’t care less if they had an openly gay player in their team and as unit I feel they would be very supportive I think the stigma comes outside of that.

Thank you for uploading this but I am curious as to why you have edited the Joey Barton section. He made some really interesting points and I was hoping to listen to them again. Cheers.

Thanks for uploading this mate. Very interesting and clearly the FA is the problem. No one else.

In my opinion , " some " of the men that have issues with a gay player in the locker room isn't because they think they'll be approached or things of that nature BUT because they're more concerned with what other teams , coaches and players might think of them having enough balls to be friends and accepting of their gay friend or because they may have experimented as a kid / teenager and are embarrassed ( even though people would have no way of knowing it ?) If most straight men realized that just because you have a penis , it doesn't mean that gay men will find you attractive or want to have sex with you ?. Most importantly , no gay player would put their self in a position to be beaten to death in a locker room by 21 other players by coming on to them in the shower , I assure them it's probably much more uncomfortable for the gay teammate than it is for the straight ones ?. Not everyone finds you as attractive as you find yourself ?.

Yes, the narcissism of many straight men, only wanting to be desired by women and not realising that that are not necessarily objects of desire by gay men.

@tipsygirldistraction If your talking about the middle of the conversation with Joey Barton then I tried to merge 2 cut videos together best I could, nothing was missed out I can assure you, it was just a skip in video but it was a shame he did not say more on the subject. Thanks for your comment.

If you get paid for playing for a sport you are a professional. It doesn't matter how much.

Sweden is a more liberal country than the UK gay marriage is legal there and gay rights are protected. So it is probably easier for the gay Swedish footballer to come out in Sweden than say the UK.
