Britain's Gay Footballers (pt1/4)

  • There are currently around 5,000 professional footballers in Britain, but incredibly not one of them has come out publicly as gay. Amal Fashanu, niece of Justin Fashanu, the only ever openly gay British professional, goes on a mission to discover why no gay player has followed in her uncle's boots in over twenty years. Witnessing the typical chants from opposing fans on the terraces at Brighton, Amal can immediately see why gay players will not put their heads above the parapet. But one of Britain's most famous gay football fans, Matt Lucas, tells her that the problem extends beyond the fans.
Max Clifford, who reveals he has helped several Premiership stars keep their homosexuality secret in order to preserve their careers, goes further by insisting that the mentality of most people in and around the game remains in the Dark Ages. When Amal finally negotiates some access to straight premiership stars - from the Millwall dressing room - she learns that attitudes amongst many footballers may not be as bad as feared.
The Premiership's most controversial and outspoken player, Joey Barton, who like Amal has a gay uncle, expresses 'pity' for his fellow professionals who lack the courage to speak out on the subject, but blames the game's homophobia on some of the 'archaic figures' who run the game. Amal also gains access to a professional game official prepared to come forward and meet her to discuss life as a gay man inside the game, but the politics of the game prevent him.
Amidst these fascinating revelations about football's last taboo, Amal becomes embroiled in a deeply personal journey. For the first time she is exposed to the full truth about her family's darkest secrets.

People are saying that you should "keep your sexuality to yourself" in these comments, it's about a gay footballer being able to walk around with his partner/husband the way straight footballers can walk around with their partners/wives without having to receive abuse from the stands.

It would be ideal that a person's sexuality had no bearing on their profession or vocation.

this girl deserves more credit tbh, she knows what she wants to achieve plus she can also be tough when she needs to be. Hope she stays in this kind of industry because she is pretty good at it.

Hope one day a current player will 'come out' and be followed by others - but as comments on here amongst others show, that day is a long way away. Kudos to Joey Barton too for appearing in this documentary.

Thanks for letting me know, it's always nice to hear. If everyone had your strength and courage things would be much better but unfortunately it doesn't always turn out like that. I'm glad these videos helped you along the way and I'm sure many more will follow. We need more people to raise awareness and I wish you well with that and I wish you well Tim, well done.

I see your point and agree....BUT, if a homosexual player has to live a LIE and pretend to be something they are not out of justified FEAR of being reviled if they reveal who they REALLY are, thats a very sad situation to be in.
If a top name player came out as being gay, it wouldnt bother me in the least....but it would many others.

Your welcome, there are alot of gay footballers out there in every league and it won't be long before they come out. I don't play football but I love watching it and I'm sure many other gay guys do to. Keep up the good work.

i live on an island of 1000 people. the main industry is deep sea fishing. in a way it mimics the 'gay' footballers situation. no male would dare admit to a gay orientation. i was brought up here and faced a hellish time......but now 35years later things and attitudes have changed....but not enough for any youngster to 'come out'. marriages tend to break up with alarming frequency. i leave you to ponder why.

The fact she was scared by the atmosphere shows she shouldn't go to games. She was acting like it was unusual and wrong. Footballers love it, thats why footballers play, to get the buzz of being in a really loud stadium with a massive atmosphere. They should of got someone with actual football knowledge to do this show. Poor stuff.

Footballers do not " like it " when the chants are prejuiced in nature , and nethier do their decent team mates .

Hahahaha, this will be my last comment. The thing she said after the leeds game about any player getting taunted by other fans. There is nothing wrong with that either. Ask any player, they don't mind. It's part of the game and the banter of it all.

If you think how many footballers there are it would be next to impossible for there not to be a gay footballer currently playing. In fact in all likelihood there are lots of them. Some are known inside the game others aren't but none have come out publicly. Statistically it is likely that the number is in the hundreds for gay players (and I mean Kinsey 5s or 6s) and the number that are not completely straight (somewhere in the spectrum i.e bisexual) is probably easily a four digit number! Therefore there is likely a closeted football at the top. Someone is missing a trick, if a really big player turned around and came out I reckon he could become an instant national hero. They could be the next David Beckham. Other sports can do it look at Michael Sam in NFL and Steve Davies in cricket as well as Gareth Thomas in rugby.

Justin Fashanu wasn't some brave gay rights warrior who 'came out' to champion the cause. Fashanu's career had already collapsed in 1990 and he was playing for Leyton Orient. He sold his story to the Sun newspaper because he was desperate for money. When he was at the height of his career and had plenty of money hew was only too happy to keep his little secret to himself.

  • @JordanjamesX
    @JordanjamesX 11 ปีที่แล้ว

I also wonder if Amal addresses her own father John's homophobia and prejudice against her uncle Justin? Justin Fashanu experienced a lot of racism and homophobia in his life and his struggle was even more difficult because he was a black gay man. I wonder why the media always ignore the fact that Justin's struggle wasn't just because of his sexuality it also relates to his race and culture. Look at John Fashanu Justin's brother is so homophobic as are plenty of other blacks of African origin.

We can see you holding hands is just a witty football chant as they are known as quite a gay city. If you get offended by football chants, you shouldn't go to football. There is nothing wrong with 'offensive' football chanting. it wasn't as if it was directed to an actual gay person. Jesus people don't belong in football if they are going to be so fucking touchy!
