It has been 5 years and I randomly stumbled upong this video while looking how to do my frozen star Harlequin vehicles and I think this is just was meant to be!
I just randomly stumbled across this video a year after it’s been uploaded and it’s EXACTLY what I’ve been needing to finish my Tzeentch Chaos Knight, thanks man!
@@TheHangryGoat Great lmao, that said I don’t have it anymore because I got a great offer to sell it off, so I actually wound up selling that Knight for two Knights 😅
I've had a friend looking at having his craftworld painted in the nebulaic style. I started my usual paint technique research and stumbled on this video. Normally I'd find 5 or more resources and make my own method up of the best. But I've stopped here. This will do nicely. Video deserves more views and likes!
I've got a project I've been wanting to do just like this. It's not 40K related, but sci fi. I had a plan in mind, but it was much more complicated. Thank you. This is nothing short of beautiful work. I'm grateful for this video.
Greetings from across The Pond! 😉 Excellent video, Scott; thanks for uploading it! I am really inspired by your technique for achieving this effect, so much so, that I will now be employing an adapted version of this, for a part of my current book nook project! +++EDIT+++ Liked 'n' subbed 😉👍
I wish that i could say that i were the first or the best :) but i do really appreciate the compliment - also - Marco Frisoni has some wonderful videos on Grisaille - using a light/dark valuation to modulate the semi transparent colors going over it.
Tried this last night and did well right up through the ink part haha. I tried using Pro Acryl transparent paints and they were TOO strong. Couldn't see through them and the brush strokes wouldn't go away. I tried thinning them with water and thinning them with contrast medium and neither worked well. Did a deep search to find the same inks you used so now I'm playing the waiting game. Thanks for the video!
You're looking for an ink that reactivates so Army Painter speed paints? But thin them - to dilute the color for most except where you want the most intense colors.
This seems manageable even with my skills. I was looking for a way to do nebula capes/cloaks for my thousand sons. Any advice for doing this on smaller surfaces??
I did this on wraithguard, jetbikes, warp spiders and my farseer w/retinue. For them I did use a piece of torn paper for the stencil instead of the big sheet. Also instead of flicking paint for stars I just added a spase series of tiny dots with a brush. Hope it helps!

One more comment on this to say that I would love (and I'm sure a lot of other commenters would as well) to see you recreate this with available paints. I tried finding Warcoulors inks and they are impossible to get now. I have tried Army Painter washes and speed paints, proacryl transparent paints, and various mixes with water or mediums and they've all either turned out way too dark or way too light, and all of them have left water stains and don't turn out like yours. It's frustrating because you make it look incredibly easy and I don't know if it's because of those specific inks or I just can't figure out the correct amount of thinning to make the other ones work.
@@TheHangryGoat Any idea if other Warcoloures replaceed the ink line? Im intereested in trying this out but as stated warcoloures no longer sell the inks.
Thanks for doing this tutorial. I tried to follow it using Daler Rowney FW inks. I think they have a considerably higher pigment than the Warcolours ones. My colours were much brighter and they tended to pool a bit, unfortunately.
Hey man, awesome technique! I just tried it out with gw washes and contrasts, it doesn't turn out quite as bright. But looks cool still! One question remains for me: what varnish did you use afterwards? My Minis are very matt right now, yours look a little more shiny.
Glad it worked with the GW and contrasts! My nebulae Eldar stuff only looks shiny here due to absolutely horrendous lighting 😜 and the stars don't look so stark in normal lighting also. I found that I preferred a flat look - I used a flat spray varnish after the vehicles were finished. .
I have seen others doe it with large area glazing with white. Similar to a watercolor painting where successive overlapping and on overlapping layers create a similar layered look to the areas. Also many use stippling to create depth. If I didn't use an airbrush I would try looking up a water color artists example of background layering, but use acrylic paint to avoid reactivation of the paint when the color wash is applied.
Sorry for the post necro on this, am trying to get hold of warcolours blue and purple inks but seems they don't stock those two colours any more. Does anyone have any good alternatives?
Vallejo gamecolor inks can be used, but generally speaking they are super intense so you may have to dilute them slightly. Also, you could use any slightly thinned speed or contrast paint. Essentially this is grisaille, just with a different pattern. Hope that helps 😀
Hey there - I bought them on ebay - I found this set on Amazon- same set. www.amazon.com/Planets-AirSick-Airbrush-Stencil-Template/dp/B013RUG7HE/ref=asc_df_B013RUG7HE/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312155552148&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9869580255532605956&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9018682&hvtargid=pla-678543442927&psc=1
Any type of ink should work - it works with contrast paint and the washes. Even regular paint thinned with medium Will work to an extent. What matters is translucency :) Let me know what you do!
There's nothing wrong with trying.. I wouldn't try on your miniature 1st I would definitely do I would definitely do a test run on somebody else. For something like that I would watch the street artists that paint space landscapes with spray paint.
Very nice. Sadly I got a lot of dry borders after the Ink-Step which looks quite bad. Seems like my Liquitex Inks have not been the best option for this job. They make the starts also extremely dark instead of just colorizing them
when that happened a couple of times for me - i just dotted the larger stars and also have just re-sprinkled the stars. I cannot for the life of me remember what inks it was with though - maybe vallejo game color?
Thanks for this, going to be doing a Knight Night shortly (putting it together tonight, likely priming tomorrow, and then maybe splashing it with some paint over the week) How do you think FW inks will perform? should those be alright?
Honestly I don't know, but you could always practice it on a piece of scrap plot scrap plastic before diving into the real deal. I never had the opportunity to try FW inks

yes, there are other nebula painting tutorials out there....but none of them are as good or simple to recreate as yours. It looks amazing!

I saw a magnus with the inside of his wings painted like that. Absolutely stunning. It was like looking into the void of space. Such a cool idea
funnily enough, I found this while looking for ideas for my Lord of Change. Very Tzeentchy

Super useful thanks! Watched about 20 nebula tutorials on TH-cam and this was the best one.
This is absolutely sick, mate. Love it to bits.
And really like your casual attitude about it.
Great stuff Scott!
Finally, i found THE tutorial. Now I can paint my nightbringer as i wanted.
Those ships look gorgeous and I'm excited to try this type of technique out at some point!
Thanks!
Let me know how it turns out!
I kinda got what you were doing with the white. Then I figured out the ink just before you said it and I gasped audibly. Pure genius.

it's amazing how such a complex-looking paintjob is achieved with such simple methods. gorgeous :D
Perfect effect beautifully described. Thanks for sharing.
Been thinking about doing this for my Thousand Sons character's Capes. Thanks for the easy tutorial
Definitely was terrified of painting some eldar, but this makes me a lot more
Confident. Thanks!

No worries on the difference in inks! Glad to see you tried it out- never stop painting!
Saw the pic of the DE vehicle- looking good!!
I am struggling a bit to find that brand of inks. Do you use now other brand of transparent paints/inks , like speedpaints, contrast, etc ?
Can you tell me where did you get that template please? It looks really useful.
I tried this but my ink just covered it up and wasn't very transparent. I did use a vehicle brush, did that possibly cause the issue?
would this work with contrast paints/speed paints rather than inks? I only own white ink atm 😢
I don't know how I got here or what these ships are, but I want to paint one now.
I'm curious how this would turn out with something like a black 3.0 or Nu black etc as the base coat?
I would presume just a more deep black background. Try it and let us know 😀
bad ass extreme! love it

Could you use thinned down speed paint if you don't have inks?
I don't see why not, but it's probably one of those things you'd want to try on some leftover primed sprue first or a rock or something.

Very upset that the video outro did not last long enough for me to watch paint dry.
I am using this to make literal "space" marines.
this video will be reshoot this summer i think - i can get it done in about 10 minutes with some effort :p

What inks did you use to get the nebula look?
You know what would be cool? Painting this scheme on the actual miniatures. Kabalite Warriors etc.
I did on my warp spiders back in the day :) nice large smooth backs for all kinds of nebulae/space goodness.
Hairy arms, bad lighting, and a terrible microphone immediately let you know this guy means business 😃 Brilliant paint job dude.
