True. I recently tell myself, why giving your money to whom already has a lot? Like mr. Gucci or Yuitton, or restaurants owners. If I had tought like that from the start, now I'd be a millionaire with no need to work.
I've been decluttering my whole house since Christmas and it has been eye opening! When you go through every drawer, every cabinet, and each closet it's sad to see the excess stuff you cling to. I've been ruthless in deciding what to keep. It's made me disinterested in wanting more clothes or anything. My house looks amazing and is so calming without visual clutter. Keep inspiring us with your videos.
I have been decluttering since Christmas also. I am already so much more calm and happy with what I have achieved so far (long way to go still) its awesome. Good luck. We can do this. Friend from North Georgia Mountains.
Amazing, yet decluttering is an incredibly stressful and emotionally draining process for some. Thus there is huge apprehension for even getting started.
I'm following this series also. I have a crazy weakness for home decor. I am passionate about decorating and spend so much money on stuff! Today, I went to Home Goods for no reason. I sat in my car and convinced myself not to go inside the store because I'd be spending money on a want vs a need! I did it! I drove off and felt so good doing so.
That's great! My sister is exactly the same and brings home decor stuff from the stores all the time. Her house is so full it's making her sick and stressed. She's not a hoarder...yet. I find it hard to relax when I visit. Good luck!!

In regards to #4, the key word I keep in mind is INVENTORY. How much inventory do I want to manage? The older I get, the less that amount is. After being snowed in for a week, I’m ready to give away about half of my stuff 😅
Giving away through your local Buy Nothing Project group is so much better than just dropping off you stuff at a Goodwill or something. Giving locally you have a chance to build and be part of a community!
I believe this too. A lot of what gets donated ends up in the landfill after it doesn't sell. Matching the item to a real person who needs it is so gratifying and saves it from the landfill. I started a free box at work, and it works great.
Hi Josh, from the UK 🇬🇧 I made a commitment this year that my weekly food allowance was going to be £40 ($50 dollars) between me and my husband. Not only as this been an eye opener (as different supermarkets here entice you with offers to shop with them) but I have found going back to basics for example, getting the bread maker out and batch cooking and freezing again has not only been therapeutic but has allowed me some weeks to carry over the savings made.
This series of videos have been perfect timing!! The act of Gratitude and Generosity definitely speaks to me and my husband! We love to share and are appreciative of relationships and family time. It’s been an eye opener when clearing out stuff (consumerism creep) it’s real!!! Before the holidays, we diligently started giving away household items that we had accumulated--how in the world did we not see these things before?!?!😢😮😅
I am struggling with generosity. I have been to hell and back this year (mom died and I am fighting cancer). I have felt lonely and bitter recently (esp during chemo when I had few people to help me). This in contrast to me being a people pleaser and constantly giving to others my whole life. So i dont want to be generous... I guess it's my "why" behind my giving, maybe if i were being truly generous from my heart, it wouldnt hurt now... still, I'm so tired of giving of myself (time, energy). So I won't be practicing this one. It's selfish to say, but I need to be generous to me right now. And maybe that counts just as much :-) I love what you said about gratitude... thru my illness I learned that truth: that being grateful when things were Not good was so healing. Thank you!
Just be cautious who you are generous to. Someone in need that would appreciate it, someone who is lonely etc. If someone is not there in your dark moments that you giving to it is a reason to stop. Nothing wrong with blessing others. Give to those in need. Imo.
I hear you! It's okay to be where you are at right now. Part of healing is being a good friend to yourself and giving yourself what you need at this time in your life. ❤
Being kind and generous to yourself is not selfish. As a people pleaser it is easy to not be kind to you in the same way as you would be to someone else. I wish you a speedy recovery and be generous with you time and energy to help this. Those who truly love you will support you.
A sentiment that echoes your beautiful advice on gratitude by Kristen Hewitt is "Gratitude helps you fall in love with the life you already have"! Thank you, Joshua, for all of your positive inspiration on beneficial life-changes.
This series is fantastic and exactly what I need to learn at this point in my minimalism/simple living journey. Please continue to make videos exploring the 'anti-consumerism' mindset.
Gratitude and generosity. It really makes a difference. Not just a response to Good circumstances. Try to do gratitude at dinner or before bed most nights
Absolutely, i have been so fortunate, not rich, but have plenty and extra, as i really realizing things , i went last five 5 dsys and went through several areas and found out my nice things i haven't used, worn or extra, boxed everything up and in the morning gsve everything another look, well im just blown away how my place looks thanks
I’m always amazed at the excess item management of merely going to the grocery store: Listing it, touching it, deciding on it, carting it, checking it, bagging it, re-carting it, transporting it, reversing the process to put it all away once home- just to do it all again for another batch of celery and granola next shopping trip!! CRAZY!!!! I need to apply this time/energy assessment process to the rest of my “impulsive” or “incidental” purchases!!😮
I’ve started meal planning PROPERLY doing a week plan and buying only what I need along with essentials suck as bread and milk. This has worked well for the last 3 weeks and made me savvy using up what we have in then adding/buying only what we need such as veg, salad etc
Pretty proud of myself for donating books to my school library, it felt great to let go of things I don't need and to give the books a new home, next up would be some old clothes and some plants. I had become more mindful of my spending and started decluttering in february this year because time, space and saving money is what I value most this days. I also remind myself to be grateful and be kind to my family especially my mom who values stuffs rooted in her childhood experince with only owning one pair of underwear. Because of my moom we looked stylish in our clothes ever since childhood.
Thank you Joshua for another enlightening video, and for the reminder that gratitude is a discipline and not a response when life is going well. When I was 12 years old, my dad passed away from cancer and thinking back on that time, it would have been very difficult to be grateful for what I had. I suppose as a young person I just coped. Now I am more determined than ever to always be grateful regardless of my life situations and thank you for bringing it home.
Hello Joshua, Thank you! I had my "nonspending year" (10 full months, actually) in 2022, and it was a surprisingly great experience. I am repeating it this year again, so your small lectures are coming in handy right now🙂! Thanks again!
Thank you from my heart. I have stopped buying stuff I don't need. But now I am buying too many sweet things, like chocolate and candy etc. Can't stop eating these. I know my problem is a different kettle of fish. And by the way. I donate and I am thanking every day for another day I have been given. But I live in constant fear that I am becoming homeless one day. 😢
I don't know your circumstances or why you worry about being homeless. I hope the following idea helps you. I was in the same place many years ago. I decided to stop swallowing my fear ( chocolate etc) and instead put that cash into a jam jar. I sealed the lid of the jar with sellotape ( it became full frighteningly quickly) and made a hole in top for the coins to go in. When I opened the jar once it was full, it contained £100. That was the start of my emergency fund to help ease my fear of homelessness. I put it into a savings account. I kept on doing this until I had enough to leave a difficult situation. A little at a time. Replacing comforting myself with food by literally watching my savings pot grow. Take care.

I think it would be helpful if you gave some specific examples. Such as buying a new puppy. What does that really cost in terms of time energy and resources? Or buying a boat. What does that cost beyond the price of the boat itself? These can be small examples or large ones, but I think the audience would benefit by some specifics.
I love cookbooks. but i realize i dont have as much time as i use to to bake and cook. but recently I have more careful as to what I eat. I have recently been curious about no lectin diet. for a short time. (not keto, which everyone thought was so great) so basically all my old cookbooks are not going to make me healthier. But I am embracing a new sugar free lectin free diet. not for everyone. my beans are all going to be pressure cooked. because soaking them is not enough but should always be pressure cooked. Canning does not get rid of Lectins. if you can tomato sauces etc put the jars in the pressure cooker. my tomatoes and peppers will not have seeds or skins. I found out I am pre-diabetic so now I have going to love myself take care of my gut health so I can enjoy my life a little longer. so along with becoming a minimalist and eating better, and working on my spirituality I am already feeling I am going the right direction. gratitude is a gift in good times and bad. giving from the heart, no matter how you choice to give, money or time for others makes all of us feel so much better. and working on practicing the fruitage of the spirit. this all combined is liberating and calming to the heart. we dont do things to show off but we do things for others because thats how we where made. it is part of our God given conscience. forgive yourself and others as well.

Many cities and towns have local thrift shops that sell donated goods to use the profits for local organizations. Depending on the items, some things can go to animal shelters, the Red Cross, women's safe houses, and children's programs...etc. There's always a need somewhere! Just take a few minutes to scout your area. 🙂
I keep reminding myself that buying stuff is equivalent to giving my money to billionaires in exchange for things to throw in a landfill.

Ok, thanks so much! As someone else mentioned, I always tell myself that the Lord knows the intent of my heart. Thanks so much as always!

Many cities and towns have local thrift shops that sell donated goods to use the profits for local organizations. Depending on the items, some things can go to animal shelters, the Red Cross, women's safe houses, and children's programs...etc. There's always a need somewhere! Just take a few minutes to scout your area. 🙂
someone said once to me, remember that every thing you buy costs money te get rid of one day too when it's broken.

My only complaint is the series is too short😅
