  • Summer for 2023 has most certainly, and with that the South West is starting to see an increased number of Railtours as the weeks progress. Vintage Trains were out and about on Saturday the 24th of June their postponed 'Whistling Ghost' tour from Birmingham to Minehead.
Originally down to operate back in May, the repairs to the GWR mainline between Didcot & Oxford meant the tour was pushed back to June. However this gave a longer day for the passengers to enjoy, as they travelled from Birmingham Snow Hill down the Chiltern Mainline to Oxford, followed by a sprint along the GWR mainline via Bristol to Taunton.
Tyseley's flagship Castle 7029 'Clun Castle' would head the train as far as the West Somerset Railway, where two GWR Manors completed the run to Minehead. Here the passengers were provided a break before the tour returned to Birmingham following the same route.
    0:00 7029 Clayton Crossing
    0:43 7029 Stainswick Lane
    1:29 7029 Monty's Lane
    2:53 7029 & D7659 Bishops Lydeard
    4:32 7828 & 7812 Nornvis
    5:26 7828 & 7812 Dunster
    6:10 5199 Kensford
    6:59 7812 & 7828 Doniford
    8:20 7812 & 7828 Bishops Lydeard
    9:21 7029 Taunton
    11:15 7029 Filton Bank
Another fantastic day chasing steam on the mainline, it certainly was a long day for the Castle. Despite the usual twists and turns these days bring, it was a thoroughly enjoyable day out in the sun. Hope you enjoy!

Some excellent sounds. The bigger loco handing over to the Manors is like the Cambrian Coast Express in steam days
