Magnificent Duchess of Sutherland in all her splendour showing off her gorgeous colouring. The coaches look great in the same colour. You people are lucky in the UK to have so many beautiful locos still running with beautiful classic railway stations and awesome sceneries to capture for the rest of the world to see on our big TV screens. Wonderful!
I remember reading long ago that Stanier learned his design skills at Swindon under some of the GWR key designers. Hence FOUR cylinder like Swindon's Castles and Kings. Back in the day, my favourite Locomotives the Coronation Class pacifics were called "Super Kings" by some Railway Enthusiasts. Standing on a footbridge as one of those four cylinder Locomotives pass beneath at high speed is a very impressive experience... Those four cylinders produce EIGHT exhaust pulses every revolution of those big driving wheels. At high speeds, those exhaust pulses merge into one continuous beautiful sound as impressive as any F1 car ... to my old ears. Transport enthusiast youngsters of today will never know what they missed ... ;-)

Hilary, lovely film audio presentation 👌. It doesn't matter if you are not a technocrat you have presented a lovely video of an icon. The great edwardian painter of steam trains C Hamilton Ellis said of all the trains he ever painted the Sir William stanier class shown here was the most perfect mechanical balanced looking locomotive. Keep making these 🎥 .and as a lady you know that the best love film involves a steam train" brief encounter " a timeless classic!!!! 🙂
A beautifully shot and edited video. It shows the love and care shown for these old ladies, just as capable now as when they were new. Gorgeous weather. I've shared this with a French FB group.
7P ... 8P surely .. My all time favourite Locomotive Class ... I'm old enough to remember seeing them flying up the West Coast Mainline back in the day.
@@hilsthetrainlady4683 A shadow of its former self unfortunately. I forget their names of the Stationmasters, but there was strong rivalry Between Foregate St and Shrub Hill, for floral displays and tidiness back in the Day, when things were ship shape and Bristol Fashion. 😄👍🏻
Hi Hilary When I was at primary school we finished at 3-50 and went to Watford junction to see the down Caledonian I think 4pm off of Euston hopefully with a Duchess but sometimes with a EE Type 4.Great days.Great filming.
That must have been fun. I’ve just been reading up on the line where I grew up and it was electrified in the 1920s. That probably explains why I didn’t ever get to see steam until my dad took us all to the Bluebell Railway in the 1960s!
Yes Michael..I used to see the down Caledonian at about 4.45 at Roade after school. It was always a Duchess as it was eagerly awaited as it swept passed with it's light load of 9 coaches. It left Euston at 3.35 PM non stop to Carlisle (9.11 pm) and arrived in to Glasgow Central at 11.00 pm.I have an 0 gauge Model of 46251 City Of Nottingham resplendent with a Caledonian Headboard.Oh what glorious days they were !!!!
Fantastic Hil's, lovely close up shots of the "Duchess" together with Clun Castle, nice one, wish we had a few more loco's visiting down here in Cornwall although rumour has it 60009 is coming next Sunday to Par.
The Last time that I witnessed a Princess Coronation along side a Castle Class was at Swindon on 9th MAY 1964 when I was on The East Midlander Rail tour.It ran from Nottingham to Swindon via The GCR.46251 City Of Nottingham along side 7022 Hereford Castle I was a student In Nottingham at the time, and I remember it all very well.
Beautiful sight - BUT to appreciate the sound you have to ignore the airbrake pump; she never had air brakes in operational days and it makes a world of difference.
Great work Hils , I was once a block boy in signal boxes in N.S.W. then many yrs later was a signalman at the now defunct Zig Zag Railway at Lithgow in N.S.W.
*No **_Air Con,_** and just paid well over £100 for a seat, outrageous I was covered in filth and sweated the whole day and my Soup was far too hot - really enjoyed it - fabulous day.*
What's the "chuffing" kind of sound she makes even when stationery? Thanks in advance for any info on this, also thanks a million for such wonderful sights and sounds.
Westinghouse-type air brake system. When in service, most British train braking was via vacuum, however, since 1968 Britain's railways have standardised on air brakes, hence many mainline locomotives have been adapted to be able to run with modern rolling stock, as has 'Sutherland'. Hope this helps.
Hi Alan, sorry for delayed reply. I used to use the uksteam website, but the guy who runs the site has been unwell so it’s not been updated. So now I use Rail Advent, tour operators websites, real-time trains.
Hi John. Thanks for that. I use a Panasonic HC-VXF990 with a Røde videomic pro. I also use a rather old Somy Handycam HDR-CSX250. (That's the one I usually handhold.... You can tell, as I'm not that steady!) 😊
By law all British railways have had to be fenced, so there is no point. Also if one had a bright headlight one could not see the oil lit signal lamps. One has to have lamps just to indicate the type of train-light engine, express passenger etc and the red tail lamp of course.

Staniers masterpiece and the pinnacle of british steam, you have captured not just the running but the detail of these superb loco's so well Hils

Ah, must have been great! 😊
They were classified as 7P under LMS.They became reclassified as 8P under nationalisation in 1948.
And me too, growing up near Watford Junction.
Lovely......Particularly enjoyed the "detail"shots of the Duchess, and as another subber has already mentioned....those signals!
Thank you, Graham. I thought the signals were going to be removed some time ago, so was surprised to find they are still there. I hope they stay.
Fantastic to still be able to see these in motion
Great video Hilary. Nice to see these get up a bit of speed as they fly through the stations.
Thank you, Trevor. Yes, I much prefer to see a loco putting on a bit of performance. 😊 Hilary
A great day's work by you, Hilary! Wonderful to see The Duchess both stationary and at speed. Loved it!
Thanks, John. It was quite a long day, but worth it even though there wasn’t a whistle battle at Worcester.
Fantastic job Hilary especially seeing the duchess and the castle meeting each other at Worcester On two different railtours
Thanks, Scott. I was a but disappointed that Duchess didn't whistle when Clun passed. They could gave had a nice whistle battle.
possibly the engine driver was not in his cab hilary
Scott Joseph Whiley I think the crew were out having a look at Clun themselves. Oh well, another time perhaps!

Beautiful. I spent nearly 20 years working for BR, mostly at Reading but can't recognise the place now 😕.

Thanks a lot Simon
6233 is magnificent loco
I've seen what it's like on those footplates was a black 5 but I couldn't imagine being a fireman shoveling coal into the belly of a 9f at 100mph
Yes, the firemen are very hard working. I’m a wimp; I would probably only manage a couple of shovels full while stationary 😊 Hilary
What's the "chuffing" kind of sound she makes even when stationery? Thanks in advance for any info on this, also thanks a million for such wonderful sights and sounds.
mickfromleitrim Thank you! I don’t know about the sound; I’m not very good on technical info, but I will try to find out for you.
The live steam injector, putting cold water into the boiler to reduce the blowing off of steam?

Appeared to be running with a Draincock open, was there a problem?
I don’t know! I don’t have any technical knowledge…. Hopefully someone else would be able to answer your question. Sorry. 😢 Hilary
Normal to have drain cocks open while in motion.
Why when stopped does it still sound like they are moving the union of South Africa a4 does it too 🤔
Steven Thornton I’m sure there’s a technical explanation, but I’m not able to answer that!

Do the British not put headlights on their locomotives?
Robert Ramsay Yes, but they aren’t very large.... just bright.
I guess you have far fewer level crossings than we do in Canada. Are there still human crossing guards?
By law all British railways have had to be fenced, so there is no point. Also if one had a bright headlight one could not see the oil lit signal lamps. One has to have lamps just to indicate the type of train-light engine, express passenger etc and the red tail lamp of course.
