  • This is footage that I thought was long lost due to computer errors and the flood in December so I hope you enjoy the journey back a few years . Seen in the video are 45690 Leander , 46115 Scots Guardsman , 46233 Duchess of Sutherland, 5029 Nunney Castle, 6201 Princess Elizabeth , 48151, 45231 The Sherwood Forester , 45407,44871, 60163 Tornado and 70013 Oliver Cromwell . Various tours are covered from Great Britain tours , Cumbrian Mountain Express's , Fellsman's , The Hadrian , Lune Rivers Trust and many others . Some of the shots lack the same quality as others as I have had to take them of dvd's I had with the footage on them .

    Fantastic collection. Brilliant to see so many old girls strutting their stuff without a pesky diesel stuck on the rear end. Many a year ago now, I had the shear pleaser to be on the Flying Scotsman, London to Edinburgh with only two stops with thirteen coaches that were full to capacity. The spray as we scooped up water at 90 mph was scary to a ten year old. The return trip we were pulled by a diesel which broke down at Crewe and had to be replaced, it could only manage ten coaches, oh the power of steam.

    Absolutely enthralling. I would love to drive an engine like any of those! Every boys (and middle aged mans!!!) dream come true!!! Thank you for putting this up, it's really lovely to watch, like a work of art in 3D really!!!

    As an LMS fanatic, I really loved this. I had 25 lost years of steam in the fells and this helped fill the gap a little. Leander is still distinctive in BR Black among the overwhelming majority of BR Brunswick Green, but I'm sorry her LMS Crimson Lake days came and went during my absence. Now I need to know more about Sherwood Forester's incident! Thank you for sharing it.

    For 30 years computers have been a tremendous aid to me in so many ways. When I do experience computer "errors" it is usually my fault. I have had my own experiences with lost and then recovered files. Your posting is a real treat for all train video buffs. The scenes of steam trains traversing the British landscapes are a national treasure. Thanks for sharing.

    Absolutely superb Steve, you must be made up to have been able to recover these shots. A great many highlights but to name just one, 'Tornado' really going for it at Helwith Bridge, a cracking shot. The sad thing is, as I mentioned the other day is that we'll probably not see scenes such as these again with the new loading rules etc. These were 'The Glorious Years'

    • @TheStephengthompson
      @TheStephengthompson  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Austin , I agree the loads will not be seen like that again without the can tagged on the rear . I remember Tornado very well at Helwith and I think it was her first run up the S&C if I am correct . Stev

    Hi Steve what was happening to the Black 5 45231 to make it stop? Just seeing some flames coming out at the bottom of the locomotive.

    • @TheStephengthompson
      @TheStephengthompson  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Peter , I believe the sprinkler for washing the coal had been left on so it ran short of water and partially dropped it's fire with the fire brigade then filling the tender from the nearby river !

    Was just wondering what happened to the loco at the end? I had some spcific questions some of you more enlightened chaps may be able to help with..:
    Whay has the engine stopped where it is as opposed to at a station?
    Why is steam coming out of the top?
    Why is there fire underneath the engine?
    Has something gone wrong there??
    Excuse my ignorance, I supposed you might say your video has 'lit my fire' in terms of interest in steam engines etc!

    • @TheStephengthompson
      @TheStephengthompson  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment Adjn , the steam locomotive has a water sprinkler to dampen down the coal dust in the tender and I believe it had been left running so with not enough water around the boiler the crew had to do an emergency stop and drop the fire to stop serious damage to the boiler. Regards Steve

    How much influance does the fireman have over the white mostly steam exhaust and when the exhaust is mostly black smoke.

    • @TheStephengthompson
      @TheStephengthompson  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Most of the black smoke comes when the fireman is actually firing the engine Phil . Could be other factors but that’s the main one .

    Never occurred....during WWII Germans must have only been able to run trains at night....those plumes would be visible for 20 miles up-and-away in a fighter on a clear day. Thereafter, 'life' for the loco would be about 2 minutes.
