    To Make Filling
    Ghee - 2 1/2 Tsp
    Sesame Seeds - 2 Tbsp
    Grated Coconut - 2 Cups
    Jaggery - 1 Cup
    Cardamom Powder - 1 Tsp
    To Make Kozhukattai
    Modak / Rice Flour - 2 Cups
    Salt - 1/2 Tsp
    Gingelly Oil - 2 Tsp
    Hot Water
    Method:
    1. Dry roast the sesame seeds in a pan until they are golden brown in colour and then keep them aside.
    2. To the pan, add ghee and put in the grated fresh coconut. Roast this until the excess moisture is evaporated.
    3. Now add in the jaggery and saute until it melts completely. Keep mixing it.
    4. Once the jaggery is fully melted, add the cardamom powder and mix it all again.
    5. Then add in the dry roasted sesame seeds to this mixture.
    6. Mix it all well and add ghee for the additional flavour. Give it a quick mix and keep the fillinf aside.
    7. For the outer layer of modak, take rice flour in a bowl and add salt to it.
    8. Mix it well and add in the gingelly/ sesame oil.
    9. Once you mix it all well, add the hot water gradually, some oil and prepare the dough.
    10. Apply some oil on the dough and keep it so that the moisture is locked.
    11. Take a modak mould and layer it with the rice flour dough by leaving some space in the middle for the filling.
    12. Now cover the outer part fully with the dough and open the mould.
    13. Prepare all the modaks similarly and keep them on a steamer tray.
    14. Once the water in heater starts boiling, place the tray, cover the steamer and cook the modaks for 10 mins.
    15. That's it, all the yummy and delicious modaks are ready to be offered to our loving god, Lord Ganesha and served immediately.

    Since our very favorite god Lord Ganesha's day, Ganesh Chathurthi is around the corner, I decided to show you all a wonderful, traditional Modak recipe. Modak has many styles and variations. But I today, I made this variety. These are sweet dumplings, basically the outer layer is made mainly with rice flour and the filling inside is based of Jaggery. So these sweet modaks are so good to look at and also to eat. I bought a modak mould to make them perfectly, but you can also mould the modaks gently with your hands if you don't have it at home. So do try this recipe, offer it to the God, pray well and enjoy😊

      You can refrigerate the modaks for upto 2 days

    Is it okay to add the jaggery directly? Shouldn’t we melt the jaggery and strain it first to remove impurities?

      The jaggery i have used is clean and of good quality without any impurities, but if you have a variety that may need filtering then dilute it with water and then filter it and add it

    It looks yummy. Can we use the filling with a mixture of just fresh grated coconut, roasted sesame seeds, jaggery and cardamom powder( ie, without heating and roasting the entire mixture)

    Coconut and jaggery should be added together. Rice flour needs to be added to boiling water n then steamed. Totally wrong method. But appreciate your hard work

    Recipe does not dissolve with English mis match Also.
    Sweet does not go well with oil such and absurd combination. Rubbish recipe

      We always make it with sesame seeds every year for vinayagar chathurthi. It’s a tradition followed from my grandmother. It’s being forgotten. 😊

      ​@@vara3231a family tradition may have to do with promises to specific deiteis. Generally Til is NEVER used in Prasadams unless it involves 3 conditions
      - Ancestral worship - mandatory.
      - Makar Sankranti - mandatory
      - Lord Shani.
      Individual Family traditions are just that - specific to you and your family
