  • For the first time in recorded history, an orca has been observed caring for the offspring of another species. The female orca in question, called “Sædís” (ID number SN0540), was spotted with a newborn long-finned pilot whale calf!

    Is the water not clear enough to see anything under the water?
    It would be cool if whale watching boats had a standardized underwater camera to document what's happening beneath the waves on their encounters.

    It seems the pilot whales got the calf back and the orcas believing the calf was a part of their family tired to retrieve the calf. Thus the “back and forth” chasing between the two pods.

    Saedis probably stole the calf because she wants a baby to nurture. It probably died of starvation since she couldn’t nurse it, the pilot whales got it back, or inexperienced Saedis lost it.

    It seems as if they were trying to give them the pilot whale but with them being so aggressive towards orcas, the orcas relented and decided to raise their cousin. Even if they had released the whale to them they probably would have killed it out of aggression. Remember these are very intelligent creatures. It's possible that orcas can understand language of other species but it doesn't work vice versa. Like me and my cat. My cat understands almost all of the English language but I can hardly tell one meow from another. Which can cause confusion between species. It's possible that the orcas sound like Spanish to an American only speaking person while the orca can understand both languages.

    • @dieselrecords
      @dieselrecords 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Your cat doesn't know all of English or any for that matter. It knows that an event follows a certain sound, like if you say the same thing every time before you feed them they know they will soon get fed but that doesn't mean they know what the word means. It is called the conditioned reflex, Pavlov won the Nobel Prize for his experiment on this.

      @@davidhunternyc1 Pilot whale pods can be much more numerous that Orca pods oftentimes, so the numbers tend to sway in favor of the Pilot whales in such incidents, but if the numbers are evenly matched, then the Orcas prevail over the Pilot whales. It’s comparable to hyenas and Lions. Lions tend to dominate, but if the hyenas greatly outnumber the Lions then the hyenas tend to prevail, though male lions can take on a lot of hyenas before it crosses that threshold. You just have to research Pilot whales, and get more familiar with the size of their pods. It’s kinda of a numbers game, though the Orcas are much more predatory

  • @davidhunternyc1
    @davidhunternyc1 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Orcas are the top predators of the ocean so I'm dumbfounded as to what weapons pilot whales have to drive off orcas? Are there any recorded incidents of attacks between pilot whales and orcas? I don't believe it's simply a matter of pilot whales having larger numbers in their pod. Perhaps pilot whale vocalizations can be used to either hurt an orca's hearing or disorient them, hence why orcas will run if chased. One on one, an orca seems to have greater offensive weapons than a pilot whale so it doesn't make sense that pilot whales seem to have the upper hand between these two species.

      Only large pods of pilot whales try to chase orcas away, and this is not guaranteed anyway
      The pilot whales are faster, the orcas are stronger and would win in a fight. Quite a few transient remains of pilot whales were found in orca digestive tracks, while no known orca remains were found in a pilot whale's guts
      This being said, pilot whales are still some of the few animals that do endeavour in chasing orcas away, alongside sperm whales etc
