- In Episode 5 of my Ultimate Whales Series, I head back to California to kayak with giants. And my mission to film an orca is finally realized as we find a brand new pod, never before seen, and rediscover an Orca that is at least 45 years old!
00:00:35 Kayaking with Humpback Whales
00:02:19 The Search of Killer Whales
00:03:08 The Largest Orca I've Seen is 45 Years Old
00:03:55 We Discovered a new pod of Orcas!
In this series, I'll travel from LA to Hawaii, to Baja California, central California, and the Sea of Cortez in search of the oceans largest creatures. While whales are the focus, my ultimate goal is find whales and sharks coexisting. A tall order but one that is likely given the wonders of sea.

What an outstanding video with a crystal-clear recording. The lone male in this video is without a doubt the largest orca I have ever seen. Very exciting. Thank you for sharing it here on TH-cam. Much Appreciated!
Wow, thank you!
Watching the big male cruise along all alone was just a magnificent sight to see. I could watch him all day long.
I know. Watching that ginormous dorsal fin, seemingly suffering from the effects of gravity after so many years, is something quite extraordinary.
I wish Tilikum would have lived that life! Amazing sight to see! Thanks
MAGNIFICENT!!! #1 ON THIS PLANET!!
@@stephaniepotterartLolita too. They actually found her pod, her grandmother and mother were still alive at the time. She would have been the perfect release!
As you stated, wish they could have had the same life. Tilly would have been waaay bigger if he was in the open water!
The dorsal on that male was more a sail than a fin. WOW!!
From someone who may never get the opportunity to see one in person… I greatly appreciate your videos. Thank you
That big boy is gorgeous! It's great to see an orca's dorsal fin standing up, unlike those in captivity.
I have been a fan of Orcas for many years. This big male is truly incredible.
Wow! That male is a giant! Incredible footage!
Amazing as always well done keep up the good work x
Very lucky to see CA-199. There is another massive size male that roams the ocean alone and I’m really hoping that nothing has happened to him. His name is Fatfin. Great videos!
Why do you think they live solo, those two males ? I’ve always thought orca lived with their mother’s line of the family for life.
Fatfin sometimes travels with Lonesome George.
Do big male orcas tend to live alone ??
Raystoric - It varies based on the ecotype. Southern and Northern Residents (fish-eaters) remain with their mothers for life. Bigg's orcas (mammal-eaters) have a more fluid social structure. Some stay with their mothers, while others venture out. Those who leave may join other pods or accompany other solitary males. The famous Californian orca CA165 Lonesome George is part of the Bigg's orca group and he is solitary, although he occasionally travels with CA171B Fatfin.
@@MermaidMusings7 Fascinating info. Thank you!
Absolutely one of my favorite videos that you have done! As an avid advocate for the critically endangered Southern Resident Orcas as well as Chinook Salmon watching these incredible mammal eating orcas I’m amazed at their size and especially the giant 45 year old male!! The size of his dorsel fin alone was unbelievable. Thank you so much for your hard work and dedication to marine life and conservation
I love your video! You are sooo correct, "this IS what life is all about"! Wait till you come side-by-side with a blue whale - they are about the size of a Trailways Bus!!
Southern Residents have a special place in my heart. L25 Ocean Sun is estimated to be 95 years old!
Even if you hadn't said this male was large, there seems to be an incredible length from the tip of the beak to the front base of the huge fin as he breaks the surface, giving the impression of size.
I'll probably never get to see the amazing wildlife you film, but your videos are the next best thing.
Many thanks
That is the most impressive dorsal fin ever!!! Excellent footage once again!!
Many thanks!
I love to watch your videos! So honest and your words bring me to feeling like I am right there with you. Thank you for your beautiful, inspiring videos!
Thank you so much!
The orcas were a spectacular sight. Thanks
He is freaking massive!!!
Isn't he?! Thanks for commenting!
Ultimate Orca! Amazing footage, and I’m glad you got to meet him!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Like a lot of older millennials (and probably young gen Xers) I have been in love with Orcas since I watched Free Willy as a kid. They're still one of my favorite animals, definitely my favorite marine animal
I'm a few years older.
I remember as a young child in the 70's watching a documentary of how they captured Orcas in the wild, often killing some in the process.
We live close enough to drive to Marineland, but I never wanted to go, or take my kids there.
Hard same
Sharks have always terrified me. Your channel has helped me at least understand sharks better from an intellectual level(I'm still terrified but can rationalize my way through). Thanks for the content.
I cried the 1st time i saw orcas in the wild. The emotions took me by surprise
I would too! you're so lucky. It's on my bucket list. living on the East Coast of the USA, I'm so jealous of the wildlife on the west Coast
The drone footage of the male is gorgeous! That dorsal took my breath away-as your videos so often do! Thank you!
Here I am stuck in Kansas and the Orca is my absolute favorite animal on this planet. Seeing one in the wild has held the number one spot on my bucket list for over 40 years. It is also the one thing on my list that I have never and will never be able to cross off. I would welcome as many videos on Orcas that you can possibly give us. Thank you for this beautiful footage.
me too! it's definitely my bucket list animal.... coming in second would be emperor penguins 🐧
Amazing footage of such gorgeous animals. Thank you!
Omg! The male Orca is amazing. I have always been amazed by the killer whales. He is amazingly gorgeous.
Orcas are my favourite animal. Please do more on them!
Lieber Carlos, jedes Video ist ein Geschenk für diese Communit. Vielen Dank dafür.
Seeing orcas hunting salmon in the San Juan Islands was one of the most exciting sites I've ever seen!
Love the orca content. I can't believe how massive that dorsal fin was!
So beautiful, I could watch these videos from sunrise to sunset 💙
Plus, such a relaxing voice.
CA 199 is breathtakingly huge!! Phenomenal creature and what amazing video of him to impart just how big he is. Very cool finding a new pod too!!.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to watch these magnificent whales and dolphins.
I more than likely would have never witnessed it if it wasnt for your patient and hard work.
Im now following your outstanding content.
What a majestic sight that 45 years old male 😮😍
Very nice Video 👍🏻
Just beautiful 😍😍 Can't get over the size of that male Orca. Massive. Thank you for your wonderful video!
Breathtakingly beautiful video!! I could see how big that Orca is without actually being there!! Once again thank you for your hard work and sharing this with the world!!!!
Always enjoy your content!
What a beautiful sight to see. The large male orca was inspiring to watch. Brought a tear to my eye.. Thank you for providing such beautiful filming and heartfelt emotions in your work.
How wonderful to observe these beautiful creatures in their habitat. Thanks!
Carlos, thank you for your work. I have just lost a family member and my mobility is way down, so your videos are such a help tp me. That dorsal is amazing!
I enjoy your shark content, but I love the Orca content 😊
I am so grateful for the opportunity you have provided to see these beautiful creatures in their own natural environment. I wish I could have been there but this is the next best thing.
Thank you again for sharing your experience, one’s I’ll never be able to do IRL. 👼
Wow ! Just WOW !! Seeing an Orca in the wild is on my bucket list !! Such majestic and cool dolphins !!! And seeing Fatfin is incredibly awesome ! I’m glad that huge old Orca is ok !!! Hoping more baby calves are born and survive !!
What a gigantic male Orca . That dorsal looks to be 7 ft tall.
I absolutly LOVE Orcas!!! I’ll be on the lookout for your next videos. THANK YOU!
My favourite ocean animal, you’re so lucky to have witnessed them.❤
From someone who lives on the prairies and will likely never get to see an Orca in person, I greatly appreciate your quality footage. That big male is very impressive.
Wow 😊 how amazing. As for this lone whale, how truly magnificent he is. Such great footage, too. Am happy for you. Thank you for sharing this. We appreciate you and all your work to do this for some of the wonderful creatures we share this mother earth with, and make/share these videos!🙏
Finally, you found ORCA's I love them so much, and the way they live, so much to know about them. Majestic Creatures! Thank you :)))
So happy they found a new pod with a baby too. I love Orca’s, they look like sea pandas 🐼
Boy, can they move. And look at the size of that fin! Gorgeous.
Love seeing all the amazing see life off the California west coast.
California east coast sucks for sharks
More Orcas? Yes please!! I only wish for a mix of longer videos
Amazing!! I had to rewind and watch him again..! What a massive creature... Gorgeous... wow. Thank you!! ❤️
He is so beautiful. Thank you for sharing!
L25 Ocean Sun (female Southern Resident) - estimated to be 95 years old
T087 Harbeson (male Bigg's) - estimated to be 60 years old
T018 Esperanza (female Bigg's) - estimated to be 68 years old
Wonderful video, Carlos!
I'm so glad you're sharing your adventures with us!.Thanks! 💛
I'm so happy you've grown to love orcas! I love them too
I was watching this video in awe and amazement! Seeing that big male orca so strong and powerful with all the ocean as his home really made me cry for all the captive orcas which have spent their entire lives swimming in a chlorinated bathtub! It pierces my heart knowing that all those creatures like Corky, who is as old as I am, nearly 60, have swum and been made to do tricks for the amusement of us humans day after day and year after year, never getting to experience the joy of roaming and hunting with family wherever they please. Seeing the big male's strong steadfast dorsal fin riding above the waves and recalling Tilikum's limp and folded over one makes me sad to be a human! Now that a lot of people in the West have wizened up to the cruelty of keeping captive orca's we have the Far East, China, now opening up more marine parks with orca's as the "main event" and I feel so helpless to help them. Thank you SO very much for all the work you have done to make these and your other awesome content. I appreciate it greatly as I am disabled and I don't get out much but the joy that watching these, and the other amazing marine animals on your videos is certainly a mental boost for me. I haven't commented before but I simply HAD to today! From country NSW Australia.
Awesome comment. I very much agree. I feel so sad and helpless and would not like to feel this way anymore. I wish someone would do something. The powers that be do not seem to care. God bless 🙌
Hello from San Diego! Orcas and sharks are my favorite sea animals. I am so stoked you’re going to be doing Orca content!!! What incredible forage this was. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an Orca that big or heard of one being a loner (kind of sad). Love your channel!!!
That’s how you want to see the Orca’s and NOT in a tank. They’re beautiful thank you for showing je
I didn’t get a notification for this one 😔
I love Orcas! YT is rude! I couldn’t get over the size of the large male’s dorsal fin. I’ve heard they have the largest dorsal of all marine mammals, so looking at this I’m guessing that it is true.
You always bring joy to my day when I watch your videos. I will continue to share them and thank you so very much Carlos ❤
Exceptional footage of CA199! I did not know , and learning from you Carlos is the best ! Thank you! I’d like to see more please! 🐬🐳🐋🦈
Excellent footage, the male Orca was exceptional. Simon Small UK 🇬🇧👍
love the orca coverage! epic
I’ve always been a water dude growing up in SoCal with a Hawaiian influence. I had my one and only sighting of a pair of Orcas when I was a kid south of the Huntington Beach pier. Seeing dolphins everyday had these things stand out due to how massive they were. I’ve been living in San Diego county for last 24yrs and we get Orcas periodically in Oceanside and La Jolla. Closest thing I’ve seen of great whites or orcas down here I’ve seen personally is a big sea lion who had its back fins bitten of extremely recently who was on a ledge just out of the water by the cove. I opted for the snorkeling came to do and saw Sea World trying to scoop up that sea lion 45min later. Keep up excellent work chief!
How big do we think that dorsal fin actually was? Extraordinary.
I wondered that as well!
please more videos of orcas and if you could get their hunting patterns on video that would be so amazing! its always sad to see an animal die, especially when they put up a good fight, but orcas are so intelligent and creative in their hunting skills, it's hard not to just be in total awe. i think if you put out more content of orcas maybe it would help the fascination with them and maybe play a role in ending orcas in captivity. your videos are more beautiful than any sea world visit
Thank you for sharing these amazing videos! It's amazing that you found an unknown pod orca. Gives me hope that there maybe more that we also don't know about. Loved watching the male swim by. He is certainly a big boy!
Keep filming on the ocean we love it!
I hope so too! Thanks again for watching!
Wow awesome footage
I don't know how you aren't at a million subscribers yet.
Brilliant!
Magnificent! I get teary eyed watching. Thank you so much for your beautiful videos!
Holy cow! That wasn’t a fin - it was a sail!
That male orca was HUGE...!!! He looks like he's pushing close to 30ft.
This was AMAZING!!! Thank you! Can’t wait to see more!! 🩶🤍🖤
I am thrilled to see this video as I have become an Orca lover . So glad you filmed this this. Thank you ❤
@Malibu Artist You have a gift. I'm sure it hasn't made you a millionaire- but what you've made reaches farther than money. TY🙏
My goodness! He is massive!!!
Incredible! I used to regularly see many pods of Orca, Dolphin, and Humpback whales just off New Brighton State Beach! What a fantastic sight!
i LOVE Orcas, got one tattooed on me! the solo male was a sight to see! cruises so peacefully. Hoping to see some in Monterey soon!
My favourite animal Orcas! So glad you are going to focus on them 😁😁😁

What an amazing encounter! Thank you for sharing such beautiful footage! 🌊🌊🌊🌊
A nice change. And yeah, he was a big lad! 😊
That's a fantastic orca venture
Awesome to see such beautiful creatures. It must be surreal to be that close to them. Thanks for sharing and working so hard to show these magnificent animals in their home environment and not in some side show.
wow that big male is a sight to see . amazing video , keep up the good work .
Orcas are the most beautiful creatures in the world! Thank you for sharing.
Yes they are!
Great video. I came to the channel for the sharks, and love orcas even more!

Wow!! So glad I watched this episode. The video was absolutely enthralling. Outstanding.
Amazing video. CA-199 is magnificent
One feels like they are out on the water, seeing the whales! Great filming!
The loner male was fantastic, his dorsal fin must have been 6ft or more, any idea? Different Orcas hunt different food don't they like seals ,Rays, sharks too. Love to see a hunt filmed by yourself, great work ✌️
Always fascinating to see the Orca.
I love your Contend more and more, the more professionell IT became.
Stellar cinematography , thank you 🙏
Thank you for your channel. Its great to see a birds eye view of the marine life you film with your drone.
The narration & music are perfect. Lyn.in.the UK.
