  • Today I decided to go houseplant shopping at 7 Big Box Stores in my home town. I am aways curious as to which Walmart, lowes, & Home Depot locations have the best indoor plant selection. Garden Centers in grocery stores & hardware stores like these are typically not the greatest, but I think I was able to find some great plants to add to my houseplant collection! What do you think?

@@GinaLWolf that is interesting because Home Depot's website states "Perennials, trees and shrubs have a 1 year guarantee. And when she’s not there her husband usually is (he’s almost as knowledgeable as she). We have 1/2 hr discussions every time I go in. Lol. Girl you need to bring your magnifying glass like me and plant shop Sherlock Holmes style! 😂 Good haul for the beginning of March 👍 I SO would have rescued that burgundy rubber tree! She looked so sad being there 😢 P.S. from what I could see your fan palm didn't have outright signs of infectious disease. Looks more like a mineral deficiency. A nice ice high NPK feed should do the trick. Fan palms also hate to be distributed so be careful with your potting. Measure twice cut once! Also your begonia likes humidity but HATES water on her leaves and she likes a little dryness between waterings. Yes, a humidity loving plant that hates wet leaves & likes to go dry! Begonias are nuts if you ask me 🙈🍃🌱

    • @cherylanderson3340
      @cherylanderson3340 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

That looks like a type of Rex Begonia- one of the many, of similar coloration & pattern, I've owned one & lost it quite rapidly.
We need to replicate the very high humidity it had been living in.
Winter is the most difficult transition. In winter, the ambiet humidity levels are quite low, due to the fact we have auxiliary heating on, drying out the air.
I really like the pattern & leaf shape of your Rex.It's growing nicely, with plenty of new interior growth coming along. You will want to look up it's ideal soil, & water from the saucer. A fine misting in early morning & afternoon might keep then happy. Don't spray them at night, whdn temps drop. They can get powdery mildew.
If you see any mildew, cut that leaf off & discard it directly into a tissue. Fold it up gently & once encased, it goes directly into the trash. Don't put a mildewy leaf on the table, saucer, or your clothes, as spores are easily released into the air, & could infect other plants.
After repotting, your Rex will take off & soon be 3x its size.
Those palms & rhe Begonia will all require high humidity in tbe air to keep looking nice.
You can put pebble trays around the room, particularly beneath & around the plants. Pour water over the pebbles when ever they get low. Try to not let the pebbles go dry.
Even if you're letting tbe soil dry a bit in the pots, between waterings to prevent rot or mildew, the leaves will look tbeir best if you can provide ambient humidity. You might want to buy a humidifier.
You can also put out glasses or decorative bowls of water to assist those upper leaves as your palms grow & fan out.
The fan palm is a beauty. Just personal taste, but I'd likely cut off the early leaves which have only 2 sections & any that are damaged. Cutting off any inferior leaves emcourages the plants to put out new, fresh leaves.
Being watered just before being loaded onto trucks, the plants may have then sat in a cool area at some point. That alone could cause yellowing of some leaves, plus some might be older leaves or might've been slightly damaged when potted up to the next size to sell for more money & to lower the entire lot's maintennance for the growers. by holding more water. I didn't notice sny yellowing, but you'd mentioned it.
So whatever the cause of yellowing, if just a leaf or two, don't assume the worst. Just cut off any damaged leaves or roots & let tbem get settled in.
If there's a mineral deciciency, it's not as likely when it's in fairly new soil & has been likely fed , so hold of on any feeding or mineral tweaks & let it get aclimated.
If it has insects sucking out liquid & plant matter, that can cause yellowing. Again cut off affected leaves. If tbe leaves are sticky feeling, don't buy it or get it away from your other plants quickly.
Then study under tbe leavez in good light with a magnifying glass to identify what type of insects you're dealing with. Look for spider mites aphids, scale, mealy bugs, etc, by researching pics of insects & the kind of damage you may have. You didn't show the affected area up close, so I won't bother guessing.
Before buying an expensive & toxic product, give it a spray with an insecticidal soap or make your own by adding some Dr Bronners; Dr Woods castile soap; or a non-detergent dish soap to a spray bottle filled with filtered room temp water. Spray with soap solution while plants are wet from hard showering .
Lay any new pots down in tbe tub to spray the undersides of every leaf to remove as many bugs as possible with that initial spray. Do spray the soil & pot also, then spray out the tub so none can crawl back on to the pot then into the soil.
Then while quite wet, shake up the home made solution & spray the undersides, tops, stems, soil & pot.
It may be infested, & not infected.

It's so annoying to be treated like I know nothing, when I'm the one hands on, and they're the one's who pass by without even acknowledging their products. Unfortunately, we vendors are not allowed to water, due to a "liability/loss prevention issue", which, in my opinion, is stupid.

@@HarliG Also, I know Sago palms are highly poisonous if ingested (I'm telling you because of your poochies), but I'm not sure if you had you're eye on one or not. They don't always put the warning tags on the plants like they should. Just a heads up! =)

I went to Home-depot and Lowes and they didn’t have a whole lot of plants I wanted. Lowes had more and better looking plants today. But that may change. I only got one new type of Cressula, but my friend found quite a few succulents, then we went to her house and planted them up. Had a great time. LOVE IT!!! Loved your haul, and the BIG palm you got.

Definitely Swedish Ivy. I have a plant from a water-rooted cutting taken decades ago. When it gets a bit ‘leggy’ it gets a good trim and I root all the good size pieces and give them away. Very good value plant, super easy to care for.

I got a Home Depot cactus once and yeah I felt like I was done dirty because it had a beautiful flower on it. I bought it and I got home and I found out the flower was fake and hot glued onto the actual cactus and that type of cactus doesn't have flowers soooo yeah I don't trust Home Depot they are deceiving.

I thought I was the only one that does this plant tour with the box stores especially around nearing spring. I am just sooo like you with clearance plants. Good find! I moved out of Florida but revisited my mom a week ago. The plants there at all the Lowes, Home Depot, and WalMart all so lush and thriving and the selection--totally envious since I now live in Virginia Beach, VA. Anyway, thanks for not making me feel soooo plant obsessed, plant maniac since I too do this type of tour. It is the first dept. I go to when I visit these stores. LOL.

I liked your video. I went to Loews and Home Depot last monday afternoon. The fulltime employee at Lowes garden center was marking down older plants because the newer plants just arrived with have a new wick in the bottom of their pots for ease in watering. She was discounting the old style potted plants. I bought a few ferns for 50 cents each also. I also bought the Rainbow moss you looked at for $5!! On clearance. It just needed a little cleanup, only a few dry ends that i trimmed off. I hung it from the shower rod in my bathroom that has a window. I mist it whenever i go in there. It really perks up with the misting. Also, the lady at Lowes said the parttime weekend employees didn't water the plants well and she was cleaning up and marking down plants. Mondays and tuesdays may be good days to go look for deals right now.. Its soo fun to go look! Also liked the big Fig. 🌿🌿🌿😁☺

Hi Harli ~ great haul! I really liked that Rainbow Moss you looked at, such pretty colors. I had a purple passion plant many years ago and it bloomed! The bad thing about that is the flowers looked like dandelions and they smelled really bad! Also, I was at our Walmart in Nampa, ID and saw the same pots. I bought the smaller of the marbled one. For some reason they are not carrying houseplants right now. I hope they will soon!

I'm with you... Big Box stores are generally not my "go-to" plant shops. That being said, I got my date palm at Lowe's. It's under a grow light, likes lots of water and I spray maybe once or twice a week if I remember and it's doing great.

My favorite plant is my impatient...I know it is suppose to be an annual but I brought it inside for the winter put it in a South facing window and water it when a leaf or two begins to curl....It is flowering GREAT.... I also took cuttings off of another impatient when it got leggy I cut 6"long tossed them in filtered water.. topped off the water occasionally they got great roots in about 3 1/2 weeks planted them in miracle grow potting mix ...they are 2 weeks later blooming like mad I watered a bit everyday for about two weeks to acclimate the "water roots" to become "soil roots".......Aaahhhh nothing like colorful flowers blooming in the house in winter....Oh yeah they also need air circulation so my ceiling fan gets put on for about 4 hours a day at least on low...usually on medium.....Just thought I'd let everybody know garden plants can become free house plants in the winter...I bring in my Vining geraniums too and they do great !!! South facing window....No shopping necessary...no opening my wallet more than once...just continuation of the fun into a colorful winter.😉

The Pygmy date palm is very easy. I have a big one in my basement because I have no room for it in the winter and as long as you water them when they are dry, they will be fine. They don’t mind low light at all. I highly recommend it if you want a palm. I keep mine outside in full sun in the summer.

I feel that i did a good job, but i would appreciate shedding some light on this topic (: thanks again and keep up the good work!
