Falling in love with plants on Instagram is too easy, specially because people place the plants on unrealistic areas just for a pic...

You can leave for a week. No problem. Just don’t buy those which require moisture everywhere and you will be fine.

When my neighbours leave town, some of them usually ask me if I can water their plants and of course I do. I myself use water reservoir pots (or I create them myself, usually with pots for orchids as they taper at the bottom so my pot will get stuck after 2/3 of the pot, all that is left is a at least 0,5 cm thick string made of cotton) or drip devices or I might think about something new, it works with electricity, little pumps that hang in a jar of water and they pump little amounts into the flower pot over the day.
If you use bentonite in your soil, it holds more water, some types of soil hold more water to begin with, you can experiment with this (the fun never stops! :D).
If you are from Germany, I use the soil of „Lubera“, beste Erde überhaupt. Hält Wasser ohne Ende.

Cat poop anywhere. I hate cat lady, because they just hug and adore the cute little kitty. But the cat poop on her neighbor's soil.
I have one such neighbor, her cat poop on my shallot pots and garlic pots. I finally tired of cleaning their poo for 2 weeks straight. So i put many small nails under my soil.
Yes the cat injured his foot. But dont blame me. I am not the one let loose a pet.

In front of my window are block of flats and 40 years old trees and from East another block is semi-blocking the light. Imagine I grow orchids, all types, anthurium and sanseveria, draecena, lilies, gloxinia, fresies, lavander, oregano, mint and irises. All are growing flower spikes because I supliment with artificial light.

Thank you... interesting,,,BUT...What about the risk of mold when you increase the humidity of a humidifier?
What type of wall can withstand high humidity?
You also need to talk about what type of ventilation you have in the house / apartment.
What it takes to avoid getting sick of the air..that is, if you should live there toghether with the plants...
For my own part, I think the aesthetic part is also important..

This is some great advice...just to add a little of my own knowledge...instead of fluorescent bulbs, you can get full spectrum LED lights that include the "warm" tones the fluorescent tubes lack. They also consume a lot less energy. This will also aid plants to flower if they are so inclined (flowering plants need the warm spectrum). Also, I would not advise a humidifier. Instead place a plant on a tray of moistened pebbles (just dont let the water get as high as the drainage holes), and they will get more than enough humidity and you wont be promoting growth of something you dont want...mold. Also, how clean your windows are will also affect your light...clean windows = more light (not an easy task in a bustling city environment). Also...lots of plants can be easily propagated simply by sticking a small cutting in water and left in a sunny window. I have two 8 foot ficus trees that I propagated doing just that that I took from a plant that someone had thrown out in an alley (it had a piece that wasnt dead...that was over 20 years ago) so you dont even always have to spend money on a new plant! One more thing...be aware of the active growing season for your plants...just like the rest of us...they require a rest period. Just like we can't keep going all the time...there are times of the year when a plant needs to slow down and chill out...if you let them rest...they will grow much faster and healthier when the active growth time comes around (this is really important if you use grow lights since they dont mimic the seasons like natural light). When a plant is resting, it doesnt need quite as much water or fertilizer. Hope some of you find this as a useful add on to a great video.

thanks for the excellent overview! ... figuring out indoor lighting here needs considering the seasonal positioning of the sun being higher in the summer and low in the winter with every changing rising and setting positions, as well as having large trees surrounding a home so being in leaf or not changes things and then having a large overhang also effects things since the high summer sun is shaded and low winter sun comes right in... yikes it's all so very confusing lol.... very much appreciate all your inspiration and wonderful information and no doubt will figure out this changing lighting business eventually... :)

I disagree that ALL plants need light. I have plants that if I put out even on the shade the leaves turn yellow, but if put them inside the bathroom they thrive really well. They're not plastic.

I love plants especially succulents but sadly I live in a house that doesn't have a lot of windows because it is a really old house. My room only has one window where I can really get some good light and I don't have a lot of space to put some plants there so I'm trying to find some artificial lights that gives off the same uv-b Rays as the sun to fill up my room SO I CAN MAKE MY ROOM LOOK LIKE A JUNGLE.

I also live in Brooklyn and have an East and west configured apartment with my bedroom on the western side, haha, too funny. However, my building is at a slightly different angle; my living room windows face East/SouthEast and my bedroom windows face West/NorthWest. So.. the “strong southern and western sun” designation isn’t so straightforward for me.. frustratingly enough. that said, I still have my plants with lower/medium light needs in my eastern window, like you do. And my cactus/succulents in my western windows, also like you. Only problem with this, for me due to my configuration, is that in the winter, not as much direct light shines through my west windows.. so, rather than swapping all my plants, I bought a grow light for my cactus and succulent plants. My most prized being a massive aloe mother plant.
The one thing I worry about and would love to ask you about (if you read this), is if my marantaceae plants (I have 3 of them) are receiving too much direct morning light in the east/southeast window? The direct morning sun is a lot softer, but does shine through the windows until about 11am the latest (and, of course, not as much in winter). I have positioned these prayer plants closer to the right side and inside section of the sill where the shadow begins earliest.
Basically, just want to know if the prayer plants can handle about 2-3 hours of direct morning light starting around 7:30-8am.
    Thank you!!

I was one of those people who killed every single plant. My problem: I'd forget to water. So for all those years I didn't have any plants, I'm in my 40s now and it's not until just the last few years I've started having plants. I started with Phalaenopsis orchids and realized, hey I didn't kill them. Then more orchids. Then one year ago I decided to try other plants, not orchids. I love orchids, but when they're not flowering, they're kind of boring. So I did this online test, an online plant shop had, to see what sort of plants suit your conditions. The result was: none! 😂 The thing is that my windows are either west or east. So spring/summer on the one side they'll have scorching sun from about sunrise until about 1 p.m. On the other side from about 3 p.m. until sun down, which in the summer is pretty late. The only plants that can survive this are cacti, and I don't like cacti. On the other hand in the fall/winter there's hardly any sun at all. So I'm pretty much moving around my plants, with the seasons. Fall/winter they go back on the window sill. Come spring they go into the middle of the house, or some I do keep by the window, but around 3 or 4 p.m. I'm pulling the curtain. I like what you said about creating the right conditions. In fact I just recently bought a grow light, just to be used in the fall/winter.

Thanks a lot for the video. Your videos always helpful and detail. I wish to have as much plant in room as yours, like a dream... Well, seem that my bedroom is South facing as it has strong sunlight in during noon time (around 1-2 pm). The room is super hot by then. During weekday I go to work, so can imagine that there is no AC or fan on, then the room is very hot & not very well circulated as all doors are closed. Could you please advise me any plant can survive in this condition? I live in South East Asia country fyi. Much appreciated if you could provide me some advice.

I have over 80 plants, but I'm looking to improve my plant health. Would you consider going to people's homes to give them pointers and recommendations? Previously you have established plants for people on a budget. I watched a guy in a new york loft you purchased a lot of plants for. I'm not a newbie..but feel there's always room for improvement.

You explain it in a way that is easy to understand. Now I know I have SW light. I am looking to find out why my spider plant leaves all have cracks, even the new growth gets cracks, and it has not had babies (I had it over 1 1/2 years) I will keep searching through your videos for the answer. Thank you so much. Judy

I had a cacao plant near a south facing window in Seattle. I tried twice, failure both times. I had a ficus lyrata (fiddle-leaf fig) blocking most of the sun, but I fear it was still too much light. The humidity was typically between 30-50%. I want to try again, but I may need to wait until I have better growing conditions. Can you do a video on growing cacao plants indoors?

Do you have any advice on a south facing window shelf that doesn’t get direct sunlight? There’s a little roof over the window that blocks the light from directly hitting the shelf. It still gets very bright in the room, but since I’m still a little newer with plants, I don’t know if maybe medium light plants would like it there, or only bright, indirect light plants would, and etc. I can’t seem to find any advice for this issue because most articles and videos just assume south facing windows are getting perfect, direct light. If you have any advice, I’d really appreciate it! Thank you!

I'm fairly new to houseplants, mine are thriving in my North and west facing windows in the UK, South is full sun as I know my back garden is south facing. I have a pergola covered with a climbing rose which provides shade for my south windows which has been good. I think every window sill in my house is covered in plants, plus hanging from curtain rods. Very useful info.
