"Wind of Change" is a song by West German rock band Scorpions, the text was written to explain the fall of communism and the political change in Europe at the end of the 80s. Klaus Meine the singer of the band was inspirated when the Scorpions performed on Moscow Music Peace Festival, 13th August 1989 in Lenin Stadium. When he was sitting in Gorky Park he got the idea for this song.
Great summary….I would add to that, that I recall the song having significance when the Berlin Wall came down not too long after the song came out.
This song brought that wall down, it wasn’t Reagan or Gorbachev, it was Klaus
@@morkrazy No, Meine just commented on that with the song.
It was a time of so much change, so much promise, and this song reflected that perfectly. I'm from New Zealand 🇳🇿, and even here we could feel the Wind Of Change. It felt like it was blowing through the entire world, heralding a change for the better. We saw what the world could be. Should be. Was going to be.
It was an exciting, awe-inspiring, a little frightening, time to be alive. The very air was alive with possibility. Nothing since has held the same feeling. The same promise.
We watched as the Map Of Europe was redrawn. Only to be redrawn again, and again, as countries fractured and split apart, only to reform in new and fascinating ways. We watched as the number of countries increased. We saw the Wind Of Change sweep across Eastern Europe and leave a changed world in it's wake.
Sometimes I wonder what happened. Where all that energy, all that promise went.
Try the original out. This song deserves to be heard how they recorded it.
Definitely agree 👍
Scorpions made a lot of fantasic music. Just go ahead...
The original is so much more powerfull 👍
@@originone definitely
The original captures the feeling of the time.
There was the briefest of moments when the Iron Curtain came down, when the Berlin Wall came down, a moment where it felt like all the people of the world were finally on the the same path. I was in my mid-twenties and naive I guess, but for a few months, the world really felt good. This song always reminds me of that time and captures that feeling perfectly.
I totally agree, I thought the world was one and racism was dead, and poof, with Rodney King, it was gone.
I know, even in New Zealand we felt it. It was a time of so much change - so much promise. Even the very air seemed full of excitement and possibility. We saw what the world could be; should be.
We watched the map of Europe be redrawn again and again, countries splitting apart and reforming in new and fascinating ways, as the Wind Of Change swept across Eastern Europe leaving a different world behind.
If you didn't live through that period you can never really understood how wonderful, how powerful, how hopeful, and promising, a time it was. And part of me feels sorry for those who didn't experience it.
Sometimes I wonder, what happened? Where did all that promise go? Then I realize what happened... People.
But this song, Wind Of Change, takes you back to that time. It's beautifully nostalgic, and painfully wistful. And I hope, one day, all that promise will finally be realized.
I was a child, but I felt the same thing. It was hope. Hope is what we felt.
I was stationed in Germany when the Berlin wall came down. Not Berlin. I was in Bavaria, which is southern West Germany. Kitzingen to be exact. This song definitely resonates that time frame.
You have to hear the original version. His vocals are amazing!!
I think the emotion and importance of this song comes through much better in the original version. Might be just me but this felt a little like as if Broadway got a hold of it, if that makes any sense lol On another note, if you want to check out metal and an orchestra come together in an epic way, check out No Leaf Clover by Metallica. Love your reactions!
This is fair! I’ll have to check out the original. Thank you!!!
This Scorpions DVD is 1000 to 0 on Metallica's, it has the rock versions you like a hurricane and we'll burn the sky, they are magnificent.
@@brittreacts Even though the original is great -- and it is what people are used to -- this version has aspects that the original doesn't and which, for me, make this version superior in ways. I think generally when people request the original they are doing so with all the memories and associations that the original carries in their lives, which makes doing so understandable...but fear not you heard a great version here with instrumentation and a live setting you won't get in the original.
True
Metallica is a Metall Band who added an Orchestra, Bands like Nightwish or Epica composed their Songs with an Orchestra, Symphonic Metall as is best and Floor Jansen (Nightwish) is one of the best female Vocalist ever. Greetings from Germany. 🙂
Metal bands playing with orchestras was a popular thing for a while.
I always liked this one. It marked a pretty important point in European and world history. It was also a decent tune.
Holy shit. I haven't watched the reaction yet...but you're doing my favorite song. I'm very excited
People also ask
What is the meaning of Wind of Change song?
“Wind of Change” is about the destruction of the Berlin Wall.
This was the end of Soviet Union .. time of HOPE
Ah, this was one of many 'power ballads', full of emotion, music, and sheer magic.
Still Loving You is a great song by Scorpions
A beautiful & timely piece the Scorpions brought to us in a time of uncertainty. I believe just as relevant today in fact. Klaus' voice is wonderful & so glad you enjoyed this. (Just a simple request, perhaps you could add more commentary at the end of your reactions/reviews...especially a sing as powerful as this. The layers here are fantastic, the lyrical impact had a global reach. Also, pull up the lyrics...they really could bring so much meaning to music like this. ) Appreciate your channel, keep bringing the good stuff!
THE best SONG OF SCORPIONS IS STILL LOVING YOU
Gah. This really was the wrong version for a first ever listen to the Scorpions. As good as it is for those of us who know the Scorpions back catalogue very well, it is a false picture not reflective of their true legacy.
I agree. Great song, but not the best version. You can tell that they couldn't quite hear the mix over the orchestra. My favorite would be Rock You like A Hurricane.
" Mr. Gorbachev, Tear down this wall!"
Do yourself a favor and watch the official video for this song.
Sill highly recommend the original version by the older members of the band. This and a couple other songs back then became anthems celebrating the fall of the Berlin Wall.
This song was about the end of the cold war, iron curtain and Berlin wall. Scorpions were a West German band and this song was about the reunification of Germany that was split by the democratic west and communist east. It has been recognized as an unofficial anthem for eastern Europe for gaining their freedom and independence.
You really should watch the original music video. It shows a montage of events that occurred during that time and gives you the context for the song. The Berlin Wall fell at the end of 1989 and East and West Germany reunited in 1990 after being separated since 1949. The Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, the same year that "Wind of Change" was released.
Grew up with Scorpions in the 80s (high school days). They killed at the US Festival. Lots of memories are tied to this music.
This is a Great Song. It is written about the Fall of the Berlin Wall, ending the Cold War.
Hi, gratings from Germany. This is the Themsong to the unification of Germany. i was 11 years old and from West-Germany. For me it;s the biggest event in contemporary history.
The power of the fall of the Berlin Wall is the point of this song.
When I found out decades later they didn't speak any English just the song lyrics is the extent of their English. They are German.I was amazed.
They are Band from Germany. Their father's fought in WWII. The winds of change refer to the end of WWII.
More Scorpions
For a short time I felt like there was hope.
We were all so naive 😪😪
I don't know if he composed this, but right now he is conducting the band.
Where’s my Harry Mack??? Naw, i was fortunate growing up with these wonderful rock bands. Class of 78!!!🤘🏼Great reaction.
The end of the Cold War was especially important in Germany, even more than in most other countries. We were divided by the Iron Curtain into East and West Germany, East and West Berlin, the Berlin Wall. We were constantly worried, because if the war turned hot, Germany would've been groud zero for nuclear war.
The Scorpions are German and this song was written right after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
He is the conductor. Scorpions were huge in the 80's. This was the best song ever.
As many Rockbands they did beautiful ballads. ( Holiday, loving you Sunday morning, the zoo, animal magnetism...)
Thank you for giving them a chance!
Scorpions - Wind of Change (Monster Of Rock 2023), Allianz Park - São Paulo Brasil
They played this live for the first time at the tearing down of the Berlin Wall in 1992
If you watch the official music video you get a better understanding of what the wind of change is about. The iron curtain fell and the Berlin wall and people in China were starting to resist the regime... It really felt like the world was getting better back then... Now the winds seem to mostly blow in a different direction (coming strong from the right)
The more you hear harder rock/metal, you start to hear a lot of classical influences. Chord changes, vocals and solo’s all draw from composers like Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart, along with operatics in a bunch of the vocals. A ridiculous amount of metal vocalists have formal/opera training in their backgrounds. And there are quite a few that have 5+ octave ranges. Many other metal bands have done shows with a full orchestra and choir, even Metallica. RJ Dio and Disturbed would be be good to explore this avenue of classically inspired metal vocals.
this was nice! the original was amazing!
70s 80s 90s you will never get that kinda program much today
You need Twisted Sister, The Price
Everything has been said about this song in previous comments. Almost everything. Last year I went to their concert in Cracow, and they re-made almost all text and fitted new part about supporting Ukraine. History in the making in the east and Scorpions still there to sing about it
THE SCORPION is LEGEND girl.. check more of their works I'm Still Loving U 👍
LOVED IT!!!!!!!! WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO DO A SONG FOR US? YOUR VOICE IS AMAZING .
The "Wind of Change" speech was a speech by British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan in South Africa in 1960. "The wind of change is blowing through this continent. Whether we like it or not, this growth of national consciousness is a political fact." Although..... the "Wind of change" in this song, was more to do with the retreat of the Soviet Union from Eastern Europe and the fall of the Berlin Wall. I'm not sure I liked this version as much as the original though. I need to listen to original again. OK. I listened to original again. I Definitely prefer it.
Hey Britt! I think you have a beautiful singing voice! Please check out another song named "Winds Of Change" It is by Jefferson Starship and features the voices of Grace Slick & Mickey Thomas also with powerful guitar work. Mickey sang on Elvin Bishop's "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" ✌️ ☮️ ❤️ 🎸 🎸
Maybe she should have a singing channel instead of a reaction channel. I want to see the reactor react and the singer sing. Still love you though Britt.
Think fall of the Berlin Wall, the band is German. The official video has footage of the wall coming down
This song was made to unified east / west german. The song of freedom!
Need to watch the original video to get the full experience of the song!
Klaus Mein DESTROYED his vocal folds in the early 80's doing VIRGIN KILLERS Tour...the band waited around a year while he had surgery and while he learned to reuse his voice...I mean he LITERALLY destroyed his voice...and this was one of those songs after he relearned to talk and sing...the band was SOOOOO TIGHT, that they supported him the whole way through...LOVE THE SCORPIONS...
This song was written about the end of The Cold War and the Fall of Soviet Russia.
The album version is good too. You should check out “ Send Me An Angel” album version/Music Video.
It was a monumental event. It was when the Soviet Union died and many people got their freedom in East Europe, even in Russia until Putin. They moved toward democracy but now they are a dictatorship.
hey Britt, I've just finished watching about 6 or your reacts. I love the genuine reaction to the various selections. The reason i decided to subscribe. May I suggest Home Free's cover of "Brothers in Arms".
If u want to hear something u have never heard before with a full orchestra, check out DIMMU BORGIR " GATEWAYS " LIVE SONS OF THE NORTHERN LIGHT 😉 hold on u going for a ride with full band orchestra and choir with amazing sound quality
The original has more significance because of what was happening at the time & the video depicts that
He was walking around Moscow before a concert and couldn't believe the history that was being made right in front of him. I believe this is a German band.
You really need to see the music video to fully appreciate this song. It has many old historical splices of video mostly of things that were happening at the time the song was written.
Yeah, you need to hear the original Scorpions video to really get a feel for the song. It was just after the wall fell. Lot of history here. The video you show here is pretty...but it's not at all the same as the actual song.
Check out the band Unleash The Archer, song Awakening.
This must have been from some 25 years anniversary celebration of the unification of Germany. „wind of change“ came out upon the fall of the Soviet Union and became the theme song of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the re-unification of Germany. I guess they re-inacted the song with an orchestra during this kind of celebration event.
beautiful rendition, but Nothing compared to unaccompanied, original version...well worth your time to check that out...
Wow, you got me on this one. I haven't seen this performance by the Scorpions before. I think I actually prefer the original live but enjoyed your thoughts on it.
The "Grand event" you perceive and this song is for, is, believe it or not, the END of the COLD WAR.... And the hope for the "WORLD PEACE" everybody was hoping when the Berlin Wall was torn down by the Gorvachev's Soviet Union... in fact, one of these Concerts some years ago was to celebrate Gorvachevs 80th birthday.... he appeared in one of the concert videos...
Check out “ Steve Vai - For the Love of God “ with a symphony. Not what you would expect , but will blow your mind
You can feel the more raw emotion with the original
berlin wall
Please react to the ORIGINAL. The Lead Singer, Klaus, has an amazing voice
Can I make a suggestion nice lady ? Dust in the wind by Kansas...
This song has a weird conspiracy backstory according to some. It was often claimed that the CIA wrote this song for this band to perform as a way to ease the transition from the Soviet Union into their dismantling into the many different countries now that used to be part of the Soviet Union
Listen to Ed Sheeren 64 or the streets 'dry your eye's'. Those reactions I'd love to see.
You need to bump your audio volume up. 👍🏻
More relevant than ever in the current situation in Europe. Stop the war....please...I don't want to be called up for war again like in Kosovo. I've seen enough death.
watch thhe offiial video
This has to do with the fall of the Berlin wall and the USSR
At 0:20, I think you meant to say "conductor," not "composer." There are better versions of this song to listen to, without having to wait until the orchestra has presented their interpretation of the song. I'm not saying it's bad... just not the actual song that the Scorpions made famous.
Britt, you're choosing the worst possible 'first looks' at the Scorpions. The Scorpions were mega-great for 40 years, and while still great in their own right, they are in the twilight of their careers here. Claus's voice is just about done.
LOOK UP Gonkie Park HISTORY
urghhhhh such a shame you didn't react to the video
the fall of the berlin wall and the collapse of the USSR
Isn't this about the reunification of Germany?
Not against the orchestration of rock songs, but in this instance it seems to interfere with the prominence this song had in it original state. As you mentioned it sounds like a Disney song, and to me that takes away from the message. You might try "Send Me An Angel" from them as well.
To the German people, this was a big deal
Hey Britt, please add SABATON - Uprising (OFFICIAL LIVE) and SABATON - Christmas Truce (Official Music Video) to the list.
What happened to the rest of the Scorpions?
paused to check comments to see if you already understand the context. as said.... this is aaaallll about the end of communism in east germany and the eventual falling of the wall. perhaps before your time? the significance was epic back then. still revelant.
Def shoulda went original video on this one. Nevertheless love ur reactions
i love this song but i think think the Orchestra overshadows it. there are so many live concerts with just the band that just feel more impactful
I don't understand why you don't listen to the original recordings when its your first time hearing these songs.
The original version shows video clips of the Cold War and the destruction of the Berlin Wall, a better video in my opinion.
hey my rookie channel sorry but is this desrespect total, 2 songs , side A in the noob spot(acustic? scorpions?)
they are a realy great metal band since 1966, american market? hey this is sick, try alive one time
This song was about the fall of the Soviet Union just for your information💯
Urban legend says this song was put together with the help of the CIA to turn the rebellious Russian youth against communism... Seriously, it's a real myth 😂
Wrong video girl
i cannot watch this one all te way through cause it takes the great meaning of the original and makes it something it is not....... Some songs can be placed with an orchestra . but not this one.... It is not necessary . Also try to listen to the album versions of songs first
Shame not the original... :( .. great song..
please please please please please please please please please respond to PDC member Steven Tyler of Aerosmith....Dream On MTV Awards... BY FAR the best version of that song....anyone disagree? come at me
wrong version
I wonder who told her to do a live version. This is not even the best version. Should just watch the original videos of songs when you can. Glad you liked it but on your own time, look up the original video.
Please watch the real video. This one is crap
you owe it to yourself to watch to original video for the song!! It is way more emotional than this!!
