  • The Taliban's health minister has said there are "some concerns" about the separate system of teenage girls' education in Afghanistan.
It is 290 days since the Taliban banned girls from attending secondary schools.
Taliban Public Health Minister Dr Qalandar Ebad said: "The teaching of Islam states that men and women are equal, that is clear… but we have some concerns about the syllabus, we have some concerns about the hijab and some concerns about the separate system.”
It comes as human rights groups have criticised an all-male gathering of more than 4,500 of Taliban leaders, clerics and leaders for not addressing concerns about the rights of women and girls.

Unfortunately, in places like Afghanistan, the ultra-conservative wing of the Taliban is so powerful that its impossible for the moderates to move forward with women’s reforms. Otherwise, they may accidentally bolster the ISIS-K movement or start another civil war in the country. Change is slow unfortunately and the Taliban has to tread carefully to prevent another bloodbath.

The reporter: Can you tell us when girls can go back to school?
The Minister: Afghanistan began in 1823 as the Emirate of Afghanistan after the exile of the Sadozai monarchy to Herat. The Sadozai monarchy ruled the Afghan Durrani Empire, considered the founding state of modern Afghanistan. The written recorded history of the land presently constituting Afghanistan can be traced back to around 500 BCE when the area was under the Achaemenid Empire, although evidence indicates that an advanced degree of urbanized culture has existed in the land since between 3000 and 2000 BCE. Bactria dates back to 2500 BCE. The Indus Valley civilisation stretched up to large parts of Afghanistan in the north. Alexander the Great and his Macedonian army arrived at what is now Afghanistan in 330 BCE after the fall of the Achaemenid Empire during the Battle of Gaugamela. Since then, many empires have established capitals in Afghanistan, including the Greco-Bactrians, Kushans, Indo-Sassanids, Kabul Shahi, Saffarids, Samanids, Ghaznavids, Ghurids, Kartids, Timurids, Hotakis and Durranis.
Afghanistan (meaning "land of the Afghans" or "Afghan land") has been a strategically important location throughout history. The land served as " a center of the ancient Silk Road in central Asia, a gateway to Indian subcontinent, connecting China to western Asia and Europe, which carried trade from the Mediterranean to China". Sitting on many trade and migration routes, Afghanistan may be called the 'Central Asian roundabout' since routes converge from the Middle East, from the Indus Valley through the passes over the Hindu Kush, from the Far East via the Tarim Basin, and from the adjacent Eurasian Steppe.
The Iranian languages were developed by one branch of these people; the Pashto language spoken today in Afghanistan by the ethnic Pashtuns, is one of the Eastern Iranian languages. Elena E. Kuz'mina argues that the tents of Iranic-speaking nomads of Afghanistan developed from the light surface houses of the Eurasian steppe belt in the Bronze Age.
Mirwais Hotak followed Ahmad Shah Durrani unified Afghanistan's tribes such as Pashtuns, Tajiks, Hazaras, and Uzbeks and Turkmens under one banner and founded the last Afghan Empire in the early 18th century CE. Afghanistan is inhabited by many and diverse peoples: the Pashtuns, Tajiks, Hazaras, Uzbeks, Turkmen, Qizilbash, Aimak, Pashayi, Baloch, Pamiris, Nuristanis, and others.

With various countries that are predominantly Moslem having completely different attitudes towards women, I can't see how they can claim that their policies are actually Islamic in nature. Just as with Christianity with Catholic priests not being able to marry and other denominations being able to do so, these so-called religious rules have nothing to do with the religion themselves but with the people who use the religion to bolster their own prejudices and often, perceptions and values that should have been left in bygone eras of centuries ago.

Exactly idk where on earth they are getting these ideas on women from certainly not the Quran. The prophet himself married a strong independent woman who was a rich merchant.
"Khadijah bint Khuwaylid was the first wife and first follower of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Khadija was the daughter of Khuwaylid ibn Asad, a leader of the Quraysh tribe in Mecca, and a successful businesswoman in her own right. Khadija is often referred to by Muslims as 'The Mother of Believers'."
None of this would be a problem if they followed the Quran faithfully. "Women and men are equal in God's eyes, both spiritually and morally: 'I never fail to reward any worker among you for any work you do, be you male or female - you are equal to one another' (Qur'an 3.195)."

If you're gonna ask this question from the ministry of Higher education which would make more sense, even he supports the education of girls and so does the whole government. He said that they are lacking funds. All of the funds that they were recieving from outside the country have been frozen. There are provinces where there are no primary schools at all, for boys and girls.
They do need to open schools for girls soon, but they need to sort out their economic situation first to be able to do so as paying teachers is difficult without money... I think its interesting that when he said that the medical schools and postgraduate degrees for females in the health sector is open, the interview was cut short there, almost like because it doesnt fit bbc’s narrative, it can’t go into the interview lol.

Lol, you mean when he got excited to be able to say that they are letting women be nurses and midwives? Wow. How progressive of the Taliban to give up their beloved jobs pulling babies out of women and cleaning up bedpans.
There are countless countries in the world with virtually no access to funding for education. Yet not a single one of them decided that the solution to that problem was to ban all girls from secondary schools. Lack of funding as an excuse is nonsensical. You can observe the most basic of human rights without having money. Very odd that you would choose to accept an answer given by this guy.
