I remember seeing an article in the Sporting News around 1963 that a Wagner card sold for the unbelievable amount of $95.00. I thought that was insane at the time.
I thought this would be interesting. The PSA 8 T206 Honus Wagner (the FIRST Million Dollar sports card sale) which is owned by Kendrick of the Arizona Diamondbacks was owned previously by Mike Gidwitz who consigned it to REA in 2000 and sold for around 1.2 million. I interviewed Mike years later to ask why he sold it or even bought it in the first place. He sincerely reflected: "I wanted to be the 'first' person to sell a million dollar card." Mike was/is a very interesting person and has a great collection of memorabilia.
I was just going to mention Kendrick's psa 8 Wagner then saw your comment lol. That card (and possibly a Mantle rookie psa 10) would go for easily $10-$20M possibly as high as $40-$50M at auction! As far as I know the private owners of those super rare holy grails don't ever intend on selling though.
Give me the Wagner, Mantle, or Gretzky over any of that ultra modern stuff anytime. I doubt any of those ultra modern cards will appreciate considerably and be 7 figures over the long run (maybe the Lebron). Paying millions for cards like the Luca is insane.
Ik you might not believe me but when I was a kid I naught two Gretzky rookies when he was drafted. I took great care of them. I can’t believe how his career turned out. Trust me
I agree. Even the Mahomes sales. He is super talented and has had an amazing start to his career. But he could end up going the rest of his career without ever winning another Superbowl. It's looking like he will probably be a top 10 QB all time, but his prices are already reflecting 4 or 5 Superbowls.
Agree, but that's true to OPC and how they cut cards back then...with a wire. PSA is good about determining what is damage versus production characteristics. Every single pack pulled OPC would look like that.

I think it's just about every collector's dream that any one of their current rookie or prospect cards of young talent with untapped potential will become a GOAT and be able to sell those cards for crazy amounts of money one day. So seeing a list like this is definitely encouraging.
I just scored on a 2022 topps series 2 material relic auto card I bought a whole box and started ripping its a 1 of 10 and mines number 1 very first one he signed Mike Trout card my best card ever

Yea opc factory cuts are known as OPC "rough cut"... I don't know how I feel about it, but PSA doesn't really let it affect the grade. Some big hockey collectors actually like the rough cut. It's part of OPC's history.

I only know vintage and only collect vintage(mostly 1960's and early 1970's). I find these investments of young players like Mahommes and Luca to be incredibly risky. A bad injury that ends either of their careers and $5 mil becomes $50,000 or less
With how fast the hobby is growing. 6.6 million will be nothing in a couple decades. Cards will be selling for 10s of millions. I am so lucky to be the owner of a Luka Doncic National Treasures Vertical RPA numbered to 99 that I bought during his rookie season. If he goes on the become the GOAT I'll become a millionaire... It sounds like you made a great investment. I only know vintage but what you are saying is the card you own has only 99 made of it? Just curious if you got it graded and what grade you got and if copies have been sold on Ebay or if all the original owners are just holding?

I haven't graded it yet and can't find any recent sales on ebay for it b, t It has sold for over 50K and I paid $2,500 for it during Luka's Rookie season. I could sell it now for a huge profit but feel like it will end up being my retirement if I hold it for another 15 years.
My buddy hit a Luka nt rpa /99 in a break in 2018 and sold it for 10k when the market started heating up 😂...I feel bad for him a little considering what it's worth now, but he still made good money at the time.

Look 3D printed holders are not the wave…. When will a company truly invest into making better display and protective products…. Not talking about some big metal briefcase for slabs…. I’m taking premium display cabinets with LED lighting, bags that actually fit the card perfectly, top loaders made from true clear materials, binders that hold top loaders, boxes that actually fit cards in mags-top loaders-grade submission sleeves(Pokémon ETB boxes actually are great design), card cleaning kits, clear team cases that fit cards with sleeves lol I can literally think of so many things that have bugged me with low quality product or things that don’t fit together that should from bcw and ppl tryn to make these 3D printed stands…. Please let’s step it up like 10 notches please
Official amount Printed of Honus Wagner in the T-206 set was 863 but only 53 survived and of those 2 got destroyed one in a fire and one by the F.B.I when it was a desputed stolen Item and no owner was found

The Gretzky card has rough edges so that proves once again that grading is BS. Why the guy at PSA would grade it 10 anyway and make you multi millionaire overnight without contacting you for his share? It's not graded by notaries or KPMG lol.
PSA are garbage graders. Whenever I see a card graded by PSA I ignore the grade. It means nothing to me. So if I'm trying to put a value on it I deduct 1 point from the grade PSA gave it because that is very well what might happen if it was graded by a reputable grading company. They are soft because card owners want tens and since they are the most likely company to give you a ten that's where many send their cards for grading and PSA knows this.

Seems all these prices were during the Covid card boom. Non of those cards other than maybe the Wagner would fetch those prices today.
