Fantastic video, Chris! Your research department deserves a raise! The Littlefield error was one of the cards I sold to help pay for my daughter's adoption. She and her husband recently had a baby girl, so I'm a first time grandpa! Some immeasurable ROI.
I was on a trip with my family to the mountains at the time, and the cabin we were staying in didn't have a tv, but it did have a radio, and I remember like it was yesterday listening to that Vin Scully call of Gibson hitting the home run. My dad and I went to game 4 of that World Series. One of the most epic moments of my childhood.
Took me till my 40's to finally become super cool and own an 84 donruss Mattingly. I was able to purchase that set and the 84 fleer update set after a very profitable year of hard work. They will both stay in my collection until I leave the stadium of life for good 😆
I'm in the same boat. The 84 update Clemens was the Holy Grail when I was a kid. It was absolutely unattainable. I was shocked to find how much the monetary value decreased. I was happy yo fond that I could now buy several copies...raw, graded, autographed, I kind of went a bit 'mid life crisis' lol. I just got that donruss mattingly yesterday.
It’s crazy what these cards and the whole card market were selling at in 2021 people who got into cards at that time didn’t realize thanks for video appreciate you
I collected McGwire as a kid and ended up with around 10 of the USA cards. Sold them all when he broke the record and bought a few Jordan rookies. Good times
Great video! My mother just passed and ive been going through all of my old cards. I have found dozens of some great gems. I may had overlooked a goodbit without these videos to inspire me to look through them all.
OMG, I have all of these cards from the 1980's (many 1987-1988) in pristine condition, Fleer & Fleer Ultra's, Upper Decks, Topps, Donruss. Nolan Ryan, Wade Boggs Rookie's, Ripkins, Frank Thomas, many & many more. I bought 2 big boxes, nicely packed sets. I lost 1 but it's around here somewhere that I bought over 25yrs ago in an Estate sale.
I spent $40 on a raw NM+ Topps Gwynn rookie when the market was high. I definitely got beat when you look at being able to get them for $10-15 now. At least I can say I've got one.
Thanks for the video! I owned several of the cards you shown, 15 years ago I ended up in jail for DUI,I wasnt able to pay my storage bill and some lucky person ended up buying the unit. I got 8 unopened boxes & 2 opened .
80s were the best. Weird week - lots of 80s list videos popped up. And channel COG Sportscards and I planned an 80s livestream before all these videos, and we did that Thursday. Amazing iconic favorite cards of mine in the 80s! Nice job as usual Chris !
Awesome video! I recently got back into card collecting. Being in my 40’s the 1980’s are naturally the ones I remember and appreciate the most. All my old cards are raw and I knew if I was going to start again I’d want graded but 9 and 10’s are pretty wild price wise, so I decided on PSA 8’s. To me, as a casual collector, they look pretty darn mint and only cost a fraction of the price of 9/10. I completed my 1980’s rookie set and couldn’t be happier with how it came out. A lot of these cards are the same ones I choose. So iconic and nostalgic!
My mother convinced me to sell all my cards when I went into the military. The collection was ungraded since it was not really a thing in 1988 for the average collector. I had several complete runs of Topps from 1979, 80, 81, 82, and 83. Sadly, no traded sets but still. This video while amazing, made me a little nauseous hahaha!
You had Vin Scully’s description of Kirk Gibson’s historic home run it gave me chills!! Thanks 🙏 for the memories…. You get a subscription & a thumbs up for that Bruh
I can’t tell how much I look forward to these summary videos, and the year in cards videos! Love that you show different versions of the player’s cards before the “unveiling”. Also like how you show the prices of different PSA grades. Getting rid of the Tiffany’s was a good idea. I’m probably in the minority but error cards I’ve always found annoying. I just never really cared that a common player has FF on his bat. Would love to see other 80’s and 90’-95’ videos for the 4 major sports! Either way thank you for making great videos for the love of the hobby!
A lot of people knock the Junk Wax Era, but I wish every era of cards were like that. There is something for every collector in terms of price range/grade. If you just want a solid PSA 9 collection of Mint rookies, they are all affordable with the exception of Henderson. If you want to go high end and have a large budget, you can spring for the PSA 10’s. And if you are on a tight budget, the PSA 8’s are a steal. I see so many vintage and ultra modern cards out of the price range of most collectors, the Junk Wax Era is the most collector friendly in that respect.
@@wormsby74 the "junk wax" era was from 88-92 .. card company's in those 4 years just produced so much of it .. That's why its still so cheap , and collector friendly today ..
@@wormsby74 People sometimes have the misconception that there are more then 4 years , but nope 88-92 is the junk wax era . .. Look at the price of a box of 92 topps , and 93 topps . Quite the difference .. same deal with the 87-88 topps .. you can see the price drop in those 4 years due to over production .. There's just still a lot of that stuff sitting on the market .
I do own most of the baseball cards and I continue collecting them and I know foul ball paul Jones record holder of 3.06 million baseball cards in Guiness world records most in America.
Had quite a few of these back in the days, kept em in shoe boxes. When we moved in the 90s they disappeared. My parents were "clearing things out" during the move and I was overseas for summer vacation. Came back, never saw them again! Every time my parents cleared things out in the house they seemed to throw some of my stuff out they saw as junk, I was a collectibles hoarder, toys, comics, cards etc (kids stuff back in the day). The stuff they got rid of if I still had them today, I'd be one lucky fellow. Usually kids / teens dont take care of their stuff, I would not play and keep my things in mint condition, so I guess my parents saw me as a hoarder who did not play with his stuff, so they threw things out thinking I would not notice, every time they did something like that the experience of having my stuff taken was very disturbing.
Back in 1989, I had a brief conversation with Kirby Puckett as he was pumping gas in his car and I was pumping gas in my car in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. Very nice guy. I didn’t ask him for an autograph. I just asked him how he was doing, he said he was doing fine. Getting ready for spring training.
My dad collected for only a year (1960) and told stories of how he put them on his bike. Survivors were Yaz RC, Mantle AS, Clemente, and Mays. I collected from 85-88 and have the Topps and Fleer 86 traded sets, McGwire USA, and that Canseco 88 donruss. Even then the 84 Fleer Update was always one of the top sets to get and out of my allowances range 😂.
Traded my Rickey Henderson rookie at some point in the 80s and have been kicking myself for it ever since. Regarding that 84 Donruss Mattingly rookie, I remember that set being harder to find at the time because there were fewer printed of that set. (Not sure about exact numbers though.)
I will say that Chris does have a really good eye when it comes to cards.. I'm not talking about condition but the examples of players and the photos of them on their cards - the aesthetics.. And as a true collector that's what it's all about - I mean raw - most of these cards can be had for less than a few bucks - but they are so cool.... I suppose my point is that - the best looking card isn't always the rarest or most valuable card - but that shouldn't take away from it's "glory" as a good looking card of a player we all enjoyed (or hated, lol) at one point in time...
Great video! Still get chills from the Gibson HR call. Hmmm…for the tidbits got 81 Raines and 82 Lee Smith. Love the 81 update Raines. Not sure about the others - think Glavine is on there someplace-maybe 88. Love the 83 rookies. Gwynn, Boggs and Ryno are some of my favorite cards. Not 500 different cards like today but 3 rookie cards adds some variety.
Hey! I have two of those cards, not graded though😊 #20 and #1, bookends 😂 , I should have those two 86 honourable mentions as well, not sure but I have two binders full of 86 topps. Great content, keep up the good work ❤
Great video! love seeing all the different prices in RAW, PSA 8, 9,10 and all time record. Being a Canadian kid in the 80s, it was all about hockey cards. But when that Michael Jordan upper deck baseball card came out that’s what everybody wanted! Never got one as a kid, but I picked one up for $10 at a local car show last year lol
Regarding Kirk Gibson’s home run, the radio announcer screwed up the call and said the Tigers won the game. Gibson was obviously with the Dodgers in the 1988 World Series.
Love the video Chris... regarding the 1986 Donruss Sandberg.. fyi, I don't think that a ball going past him but rather the right-fielder backing him up on a groundball that he hasn't yet fielded.
I have 2 different variations of the Billy Ripken card, both in PSA 10.... I have the U.D. Griffen Jr in PSA 10... I have the Cal Ripken Topps Traded PSA 10, & also have the Rickey Henderson in PSA 9. Great cards !! Had them over 10 years now....
Awesome! Excellent summary of the WILD 1980s! I am surpised Maddux's Leaf rookie didn't get there, but I know not to argue with your research department 😉. Thanks for another Gem-Mint video, Chris
I remember as boy/teenager how HOT the 1984 Fleer Update Gooden card, 1984 Donruss Mattingly, 86 Donruss Canseco, the 85 Topps McGwire, 89 Fleer Billy Ripken FF (People who were not collectors but tons of 89 Fleer boxes, the 89 Upper Deck Murphy error back then Griffey was just a RC trying to live up the hype). I will say this he was sought after then to but the Murphy error was selling for 3 times as Griffey's card. I couldn't afford packs I was just a pre-teen and I was at a gas station and I finally found a box (gas stations that sold cards then were cheaper than in the card shops) I had enough money to buy one pack and I hit the Griffey.
I have a Lot of these Raw so watching this gives me an Idea of witch cards to send in for Grading , If I could afford Grading there are soo many I would like to Have Graded , Well Chris that was fun , I Shared your Video and Gave it a Like , I Hope Shop Owners will Pay a decent Price for Raw Cards as that is abought all I can Do living under the Poverty Threshold .
Kirk Gibson and his sister babysat me on June 11, 1978, the day my brother was born. She lived next door to my parents. At.least that's the legend my dad told me many times.
As a kid growing up in Minnesota I can tell you Kirby's Topps rookie was all we cared about. I would have ignored anything else - just goes to show what we knew.
Fun fact about Gibson WS HR. If you watch the replay on TH-cam and you look beyond the stadium you can see a car slam on their breaks. They left the game early to beat the traffic and missed one of the greatest plays of all time..
2:55 I swear I had a Wade Boggs 1983 Topps in my childhood collection. Far preceding his '86 Topps. I can see it, it imprinted in my brain cells. 🤔3:04 Never mind! 🤣
Great Video! Been waiting on one of these since the last 80s one! I’d love to find those prices though, you definitely couldn’t have got those sells from eBay! 😂 Thanks Chris!
My takeaway is 2021 was when I should have sold. Edit: My three big specific memories from collecting in the late 80's early 90's was: 1 - I had 20ish dollar to spend and I bought the Mark McGwire USA instead of the 89 UD Griffey. 2 - I opened a Frank Thomas Member's Choice First Day production Stadium Club and immediately traded it for a bunch of older 70's/80's Nolan Ryan's(which I still have today). 3 - My Wally Joyner collection was stolen... not that it was financially valuable but I put a lot of time and effort into collecting various Joyner cards, including all of his rookies and one offs/promos, and I never recovered it.
Ryne Sandberg, Nolan Ryan’s personal punching bag😂 The two Gibson calls are Historic. I scooped up Tom Glavin, Maddox and Smoltz rookies. 3 great Braves pitchers of the era.
Can't believe the '81 traded Raines didn't get in there while Kirk Gibson and Fernando did. I feel like Raines is tragically overlooked in the hobby. His rookies sell for just a few bucks and then everything else is practically commons. He got passed over quite a bit in the 90's insert boom as well so he doesn't really have many chase cards either, I think the 81 traded might be it.
I saved up most of the money for a Canseco RC at its peak, $120, and bought it with a little help from my parents back in the late 80s!! Worst investment ever as it's worth 10 bucks now and would only be like a PSA 7 if graded. Ah well, loved the card and was obsessed with it at that time. Jose was my hero back then.
Hello you have the best coverage I can find most informative. I appreciate it very much. I bought 1,000s of cards full league sets box's of all years and every brand almost. I'm new to collecting being I didn't before this purchase but even knowing very little about the hobby I didn't have to think twice on this buy. The best thing is almost all the cards looks to have only been touch to maybe 1or2 times and some probably none. I found a 1992 John smoltz bonus 1992 it has a totally blank back can't find anything like it?? I'm in central Texas I would like to talk with you if possible being you seem to know a ton about the hobby??? Look forward to hearing from you God bless you and yours FYI I have baseball and football and basketball hockey in the type sets I spoke of in beginning of post..

Wow
Got goose bumps hearing the call of Gibson’s home run. Both all-time great announcers rose to the moment with iconic calls.

I love these videos. Brings back great memories and makes me realize that I can pick up some all time great cards in raw condition for dirt cheap
My aunt bought me an '89 Junior Upper Deck RC for my birthday in the early '90s. She was shocked at the $40 price tag. 😂
Thanks Chris, goosebumps and slight tears once again from those two all time calls

I have that Cal Ripkin Jr. Card. I bought it already sleeved at Canton Flea Market in 1994. I was 12.
I may have a few of these. Gotta check storage
I have 2 Ken Griffey rookie cards. One that you showed, and another from Donruss. Need to get them rated to see what I can get them sold as
I have all these cards from my childhood, lots of doubles, all cansecos, mattinglys,Sosa McGwire, all these shts
I have a huge collection from this era , mint condition
I enjoyed the heck out of this video. Thanks!
At some point in my youth, I probably had everyone one of these cards pass through my fingers.
Awesome - wonder if any of the packs i have that have never been opened yeilds a Valuable Card had them for 20 years
I have a bunch of these whole storage tub in binders problem is finding the buyer that buy will not rip someone off
My takeaway is 2021 was when I should have sold.
Always good stuff. Thanks man
9:38 chills 👏👏
Super Bummed that Eric Davis didn’t make it. I kinda have a rule to buy them every time I see one.
Ryne Sandberg, Nolan Ryan’s personal punching bag😂 The two Gibson calls are Historic. I scooped up Tom Glavin, Maddox and Smoltz rookies. 3 great Braves pitchers of the era.
It was a different Chicago player that was Ryan's punchee, White Sox Robin Ventura.
@@walterdudedonny 😂😂 you’re correct.
Awesome! 😎
I dont believe crime dog is in the hall. Outstanding video
McGriff was elected last year
I saved up most of the money for a Canseco RC at its peak, $120, and bought it with a little help from my parents back in the late 80s!! Worst investment ever as it's worth 10 bucks now and would only be like a PSA 7 if graded. Ah well, loved the card and was obsessed with it at that time. Jose was my hero back then.
I think I had about all of those cards at one point.
These types of videos are great. Can you do same type for 70's, 80's or 90's football.
I plan on doing those soon!
I wonder if Fleer ever had an employee workshop on how to notice words on bats after the famous card.
My favorites are (1) 83 traded Strawberry (2) 84 traded Gooden (3) 84 Donruss Mattingly (4) 89 Billy Ripken FF
what does FF stand for ?

Ken Griffey JR, #1, in my heart 😅
Thank you for such an awesome video!
