I think the reason Rhinox doesn’t get as much attention as other BW characters is because he’s the stabilizing agent of the Maximals. He’s perfectly happy not to be in the spotlight and just dedicate himself to helping his team members. His patience helps temper Cheetor’s impulsiveness, Dinobot’s warrior instincts, and Rattrap’s selfishness. It also compliments Primal’s leadership, and makes him a great second-in-command. The series tried early on to put Rattrap in that role, but really it was Rhinox who ended up taking that place because it fit him like a glove.
Agree, because he was very balanced character from the beginning he didn't need as much character development as the other Maximals.
@@Hektols exactly. Now that I'm older with a tad of grey around the temples, I understand the character a lot better. He was the mature adult in the room helping to shepard his team forward, but never had the desire to take the reigns for himself unless necessary.
Looking back, Rhinox was my favourite character. It was just unfortunate that his first action figure along with that of Dinobot’s is mediocre.
You know, it always seemed to me that Rhinox, is like a Ratchet (in a way) for the Maximales team, and he's my favorite character from TF BW

I probably enjoy BM more than most Transformers fans, but one of my biggest issues with the show was Rhinox turning into a villain. Not only did it completely go against his previous characterization (Ex. The Spark) but the show also couldn't seem to make up it's mind as to the nature of his villain turn.
But then again, BM was always hyper-inconsistent when it came to Vehicons and how much the subject in question is in control or aware of their actions (Ex. Jet storm).

I agree. As a kid, it made me really sad to see Rhinox turn into Tankor.
I remember Bob Skir getting threats and whatnot because of the choices he made in Beast Machines. I'm really happy though that he made these decisions because it gives us all something to talk about later on.
I like the idea of Rhinox becoming a spirit guide for Cybertronians that passed on into the afterlife. He reminds me of how Anubis was in Egyptian mythology.

I remember how in the cancelled TFA season 4, Blackarachnia’s own Predacons would have included a clone of Optimus named Primal Major, and I like to think Rhinox would have been a clone of Sentinel.

Primal Major was alive during the Great War, he was bonded with Alpha Supreme. Blackarachnia only created Waspinator, Inferno and Antagony.

I feel like he's the fan favorite maximal. And one of the reasons why beast machines was so hated when it first came out. He was no rattrap, but he was still pretty cool

Beast Machines was disliked by the general fans due to its dark tones. People weren't used to seeing the heroes act like a guerilla faction. Not to mention the series was CONSTANTLY compared to Megatron being a Hitler and having his own holocaust on Cyberton. Hopefully this show was obscure enough that today's "cancel culture " won't even know about it.

Knowing the ending for his character in the Legends manga makes me happy. Rhinox was my second favorite of the original crew of BW (right behind Dinobot). I like how you decided to high light both him and Tankor in the same installment. (Hasbro gave you early hints about Kingdom, didn't they? haha)

What's not said enough about the character of Rhinox, he wasn't just one of the Maximals, he was the very best of the Maximals. It's good that Rhinox's influence in the franchise is as everlasting as it has been because he's been through alot and done alot in the past that his story deserves to continue in future incarnations of the franchise.

Hey, Chris, the last part of the Generations War for Cybertron Trilogy is called "Kingdom" where the G1-era Autobots and Decepticons meet the Beast Wars-era Maximals and Predacons in time-travel story and Rhinox is part of the new toyline.
That hasn't been officially announced yet, though the leaked poster seems to be legitimate since it uses the same logo which hasn't been revealed yet when it leaked.

The first Transformers toy I ever owned as a kid! One of the most badass characters on Beast Wars! He brought the brains AND the brawn! His chain guns remain one of my favourite weapons in Transformers history, I still remember seeing him mow down Waspinator with one when I was a kid and thinking “You don’t mess with this dude!” Also one of the few characters who could get blinking Dinobot to behave! Truly awesome!

Man. Rhinox was such a good character, I kinda wish he was reformatted with the other Maximals, only if it means he’ll be in the series and keep his strong but peaceful personality.
Rhinox is definitely one of most favorite characters in "Beast Wars." Some of my favorite moments with him include his speech about sparks, taking down the Predacons after they corrupted him, retrieving Optimus Primal's spark to make him a Transmetal, and crashing into the Nemesis in the finale.
As for him being Tankor in "Beast Machines," I liked how they expanded on his 'enhanced evil' side, but I wish the show gave him a chance to redeem himself. I don't care how it would've happened, just as long as he reunited with his old comrades and helped them battle against Megatron. Plus, it would've cool to see him as a techno-organic rhinoceros.
Maybe someday Rhinox will appear as a guardian of some relic, like how Primal and Cheetor were in "Prime Wars" and "Cyberverse," respectively.

@@chrisheimva4857 As erubin said on another thread in the comments above, fancanon usually goes he was being influenced by his Tankor Shell Program as he instantly regretted everything when he died and was a spark. Wish the show clarified this, all our butthurt would be gone.
In fact Rhinox awakened as Tankor feels a lot lot like his "scheming, always one step ahead" Predacon self in that BW episode (minus the comedy since BM has almost none of it)

@@skuarf The thing is, in the episode where Tankor is revealed to be Rhinox, it was pretty much laid out that Rhinox was consciously following Megatron. Pretty unambiguously too.
But then in the very next episode Optimus Primal monologues about how the Tankor programming had corrupted Rhinox. And then the question becomes even more muddy once we take Jetstorm into account.
I do agree that a lot of the controversy surrounding BM would have been lifted if the writers had stuck to one explanation or the other.
One of the things that certainly didn't help matters was that the writers of BM were not allowed to watch BW, which explains some of the weird characterization seen in BM.
Legends gave him the Best ending, now that Is my headcanon
Isn't Legends part of the Transformers Multiverse? That would mean that technically that ending is canon.
I consider the Japanese continuity to be the canon G1 timeline in general.

As much as I love Optimus and crew, it would be a nice change if we could get a new show starring characters like Star Saber, Victory Leo and villains like Deathsaurus or Overlord.
What I found interesting is that throughout the Beast Wars series, only him and Waspinator did not went throught and trans tech, fusion or get a new forms in the show! They remained in their og form til the end of the series!
Plus Airzor, Tigatron, and Inferno since most of them had been on Earth for long and the CR tank and chamber blocked the wave that changed the Maximals and Megatron to they're Trans metal bodies

Rise of the Beast did not do Rhinox justice.
Its rare to mix brains and brawn in the same package. Rhinox also ran the niche of a laid-back hero with a crazy, scheming darkside. He could fill any role as an all-around guy in form and function.
The best part is that he isn’t like a Gary sue

Holy crap, that OG toy is kinda hideous, the cartoon definitely gave him more of a face-lift than some of the other characters.
Barring one or two exceptions, the OG line of Maximals were all like that. The opposite was true of the Predacon line though. It balanced out by the time of Transmetals though.

If we’re being honest, the first wave Beast Wars action figures, with the exceptions of Gorilla Optimus Primal and T-Rex Megatron haven’t aged well.

Rhinox became my favorite character in Beast Wars. Always calm, cool and collected even when seriously upset. My favorite Rhinox moment was right after Primal got blowed up real good and Dinobot was going on a "I'm the new leader" tirade. Rhinox just stands up, grabs Dinobot by the neck, lifts him up off the floor and calmly says, "I'm in a bad mood, understand?" Dinobot got the message. Don't mess with Rhinox.
Okay that Japanese story at the end was really cute. Great vid one of the best beasties. I really wanted more chances for him and my fav the old spawn of Unicron himself to battle or out wit each other.

He really deserves more love. I feel sorry for him in beast machines. 2:03 Megatron This is certainly the most humiliating defeat of my entire career. Yes. I think the other Predacons would agree. All you need to do now is do a Basics on rattrap and you've done the original four members of the maximal crew from beast wars.

Thanks for this series! I was a casual fan as a kid and teen (up to Beast Machines) but have found any attempt to get back into transformers overwhelming with all the lore that's accumulated! I'm really glad TH-cam magically knew I'd like this

i grew up with beast mashines when i was younger and i never understoot why Rhinox was that special to Optimus.

I loved all the Beast Wars characters. The personalities, the concept of a modern war on a primitive world it gave them their own charm.
You can definitely hear the fun in this one, the voice work on the “good ole days of g1”
Armada Rhinox is one of the few Transformers I own, I never saw Beast Wars I just thought rhino Transformer sounds cool, so this is real neat to learn more about the one he was named for

I love rhinox! He's one of my top 5 characters from beastwars. He reminds me of a quote I once heard. I cant remember the exact phrasing but it was something along the lines of "a man should be a warrior, a professor, a philosopher and a poet" rhinox embodies all of those traits and more. I got super upset to see him become a villain in beast machines but at least he found peace when he became one with the matrix. I just hope there's a nice flower bed for him on the other side

I recently rewatched Beast Wars and Beast Machines on Tubi to relive a part of my childhood. Seeing the two so close together made me think about what happened with Rhinox in Beast Machines. PART of me feels like the reason why Rhinox took the path he did after he “woke up” was because of the Predacon programming from Beast Wars. I felt like that even though it was reversed, the programming could have still been dormant so to speak and when Rattrap started poking around, the predacon programming kinda kicked in. But that’s just me rambling on lol
Rhinox is like proto-Bulkhead. That's the best way I can put it as a kid who grew up with Transformers Animated.

If they had just leaned more on the corruption of his spark in Beast Machines, I could have seen his turn in a more believable light. Unfortunately for me it just comes off as unbelievable that Rhinox, the most honest and level-headed character in Beast Wars, would just flip like that.

I've been rewatching the 1986 transformers movie recently, so I was so happy to see your channel! Love the basics series
Truly one of if not THE best transformers series. Beast Wars established SO much lore and utilized it so well. I even liked the dark arc of Beast Machines, minus the character designs of the Maximals. But sadly, I'd be surprised if that show gets pulled from history due to uts genocidal tone and constant correlations to the holocaust.

Rhinox's voice actor, Richard Newman, would voice many more characters in the Transformers franchise and other popular series afterwards, including Vector Prime in 2005's Transformers: Cybertron.
I loved every second of him on screen when I was a kid watching Beast Wars. Especially when he had those machine guns out. I was crushed when I watched Beast Machines and it was revealed he was Tankor.
The guy is unforgettable, and for a supporting character has some of the best quotes from Beast Wars.

Great tribute of not just one but essentially two polar-opposite characters! Toy history wise, I always thought the Transmetal version of Rhinox was somewhat of a 'missing link' between the original BW Rhinox and BM Tankor due to certain elements of the third 'transport' mode. Rhinox (unnamed) also actually made a brief cameo in the Armada cartoon (as a Cybertronian pilot in the retooled Mini-Con-compatible/engraved Autobot Sigil Transmetal/Unicron's First Horseman of War body). It is interesting to see how a character that only turned 'dark' in one episode in the original series eventually went all the way into the void - even as extreme as becoming a lead harbinger of the Chaos Bringer! (He always was a natural leader, especially during times of peril.) And it is also comforting to know that in the end, he rediscovered the right path and found salvation; even revisiting spiritual aspects of the original character within the multiverse. Do keep up the good cheer, Chris!
Man I cant believe this series is so old. I remember when it first came out. Beast machines i really need to give another watch. Initially the character designs were very jarring considering I was watching it right after beast wars had finished off, but I knew it was a good show. I remember seeing some of the episodes when I was younger, and despite not liking the character designs initially I really enjoyed the series
Fun fact: There's a monster in Final Fantasy III for SNES called "Rhinox" which looks like a bipedal rhinoceros. Ted Woolsey is the translator of that version that named the creature. Its original Japanese name was "Desutoroida" (Destroyer, as it is called in FF VI Advance). It has access to a spell called "Life3/Reraise" which it lacks sufficient Magic Points to actually use, though if Gau learns its Rage, he can use Life3 very early in the game, compared to when you actually get an Esper than can teach that spell to you. Since the game was released in America in 1994, but Beast Wars started in 1996, it may be possible that the name for the Beast Wars character was inspired by the game, though this has never been confirmed.
It would be good to always get at least a short clip of the characters talking in the different shows so we can get an idea of how their voices sounded.
Rhinox is the archetype of Beast from X-men. LOVED his automatic cannons though 😍😍😍

Personally, I loved what they did with Rhinox in Beast Machines.
Though I don’t think he agreed with all of Megatron’s ideas. He seemed to mostly agree with getting rid of the organic.
I always figured being stuffed inside Tankor drove him a bit mad and perhaps not all of the Pred code had been removed. Or maybe simply being twisted into Tankor ratcheted up his ambitions.
That’s why I like Beast Machines. It didn’t play it safe.

One of my favorite scenes with Rhinox was when he made that energon fart big enough to make a mushroom cloud visible from Earth’s atmosphere and blow the Predacons completely away. As Megatron put it, “This is the most humiliating defeat of my career.”
Rhinox was my fave too and my first beast wars toy. Lost him years ago but the generations rhinox sits on my shelf proudly holding his chainguns
I love this guy. I like how he blends things that you don't see too much in characters. He's big, but he's a genius. He's a medic, but he can be violent on the battlefield. I hate the idea of what they did to him in Beast Machines so much, I can't watch that show.
