i love the fact that rattrap is One of only THREE bots to make it from the first episode of Beast Wars to the last episode of Beast Machines. All those times he said "we're all gonna die", he was the rare exception

Still one of my favourite running gag interactions in Beast Wars.
I think the funniest lines from Rattrap throughout Beast Wars were; "We're all gonna die. I know, I know; shut up Rattrap," after convincing Waspinator to use a "bomb" while impersonating Quikstrike; "Just uh push the switch ya tin-horned idgit." "I love that guy," and "I gotta do everything." Despite his snark he was a great character, too bad he spent more time sassing Dinobot than Waspinator, they had great chemistry even if the only real confrontation they had was in "Other Voices"

Let's make a list of Cybertronian terms and phrases, translated to human:
1. Spawn of a glitch = son of a b-tch.
At last, my very first Patreon-sponsored episode! Due to being a 90s kid, the Beast Wars animated series is what led me to become the Transformers fan I am today. So it only made sense that my first sponsored episode would be on a character from the Beast Era, and I couldn’t think of anyone better than Rattrap. Also, I still get goosebumps every time Chris says my name.
I remember seeing Derrick’s gift of Animated Rattrap to Peaugh for a Twitter avatar - and then being completely shocked when Rattletrap appeared a few weeks later in Animated itself.
Pairing Rattrap with Starscream was a brilliant idea in the comics honestly.
I swear the more i hear about the legends manga the more i want an entire episode on it

Ive read some synopsis on Tfwiki (fun site with pretty funny captions honestly), and I legit want the whole thing translated (and possibly officially dubbed by the Japanese (or English) voice actors/actresses, legit could be fun)

My second favourite line of his was when he entered Ravage's ship. "All right you stinkin' Decepticon piece of cheese, let's see how you stand up against a stainless steel rat!" A reference to fictional character Slippery Jim DiGriz, The Stainless Steel Rat.
Another thing about Rattrap from the Beast Wars animated series was his love of gadgets and propensity for explosives. Beast Wars Rattrap always had a couple of miniature explosives on hand, his most amusing use of them was when the Predacons had control of an alien vessel and Tarantulas had the place secured with a laser web forcefield, where he made a comment about such forcefields being designed so that you can't disable them by blasting them because of how their energy redirection matrix worked, so he and the returned Transmetal Optimus Primal used a pair of high out explosives with similar yields Rattrap was keeping in his personal storage on opposite sides of the barrier to trigger a forced shutdown. Rattrap was also the first one to make interested comments on any new devices that appeared on either side of the conflict, promptly before trying to figure out how to blow it up and destroy it when it was on the Predacon side of things. When he went to rescue Cheetor, Rattrap used a device called a "hot box" to fake his heat signature when he immediately realized that Tarantulas was looking for him via thermal vision. And despite his distrusting nature and hatred for Predacons, Rattrap begrudgingly worked with Tarantulas to destroy the alien vessel after the spider had been ejected from the vessel by Megatron before preparations for a trip to Cybertron, the two worked together to devise the best way to destroy the vessel via transwarp cell explosion in transit without Megatron noticing what the plan really was but went right back trying to offline each other after the operation was completed.
Rattrap's lament over his new robot form in Beast Machines probably stemmed from his own feelings of inability to fight back without his favorite gun or explosives; even though his most dangerous aspect was most likely his resourcefulness, but he was quick to adapt. He adapted quicker than most of his fellow Maximal to adapt to combat during the truce agreement, with Waspinator ironically being the only one to adapt quicker than him among the sides as a whole, and when the Maximals ended up having their animal natures bleed through in one episode, Rattrap was one of the first to find the programming block and disable it before figuring out how to make his beast and robot forms work in harmony in battle.
I remember that scene of Rattrap taking out Tarantulas' shields! "Tricky, but doable" wound up being a sentiment I took with me into my career _decades_ later.
TLDR but I know it's good because it's praising Rattrap.

There's no denying that Rattrap's been through a lot since Beast Wars and his character really has come a long way, it's great that his presence and his popularity have grown and he's done quite a lot and is still doing alot.

The episode where Rattrap went up against Sentinel was a miracle work. Rattrap immediately went from a character I hated to my favorite Maximal in under half an hour.
Outside the original Beast Wars series, no one ever seems to be able to write him properly and instead write him how you'd stereotype the character to be.
Agreed. He's actually a complex character and very few people get what he's about.
Omg thank you! I’ve noticed this so much. He’s a good guy at heart despite his outside presentation, but modern takes always make him an outright villain no better than Swindle. IDW turns him into Starscream’s Starscream and Animated season 4 would’ve had him willingly offer to defend Megatron at trial
There's a reason Rattrap was always so hostile to "stinkin' Preds", from Dinobot to ultimately face-turned Blackarachnia. His description of Dinobot as "a slag-spoutin' saurian, but at least you know where he stands" says a lot about what Rattrap genuinely values.
@@draketheduelist This is the problem with modern writers. They have no respect for the past. If they did We would see more faithfully adaptations of Rattrap. I bet if he appears in the TF movies he will be a villain.
Not understanding the source material seems to be par for the course for most non-BW content and even in the recent IDW BW series. Rattrap gets done dirty, Dinobot's character development get bypassed and he goes straight to Code of Hero Dinobot, and Blackarachnia gets seriously downgraded (I have to wonder if the TFA folks even *liked* BW). Primal's recharacterization as a battle-eager gymbro in the recent IDW series changed the whole vibe of the crew and turned him into a pretty terrible leader, making Rattrap the character with the most realistic, even if cynical, view in the crew. Also, it seems like everyone forgets how good of friends Rattrap and Rhinox were. Like, Rattrap kissed him onscreen twice and Rhinox calls him his best friend!
Like, I get playing with characterization and bringing a fresh take on characters, but I feel like there has to be a balance in honoring what people originally liked about the character and bringing something new. Even if I don't quite like how Rattrap was written when teamed up with Starscream, I can see OG Rattrap in it. TFA's Rattletrap though... The spirit of the character BW fans loved was completely absent.
I remember being scared of rattrap when he got hit with the transwarp wave. The lighting and the pose makes it look like he’s in so much pain.
rattrap design is actually really fitting with his personality,and his choise of beast mod is the wisest among the beast wars characters,and he's probably one of the best beast wars breakout characters,besides dinobot,rampage,depth charge etc....

We humans have really done a number on the Transformers relationship language. They started out with things like creator, brother, sister, boyfriend, and girlfriend. Now they have mom, dad, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, cousin, and former roommate.

Rattrap lead to one of my favorite lines from Primal. When Rattrap and Dinobot had to go get a cure for Rhinox, and they were bickering along the way, and Primal was listening in when Cheetor asked if they'll even pull it off, and his response was, "Either they'll find it or destroy each other. Either way, I don't really care which..."
Rattrap and Dinobot had the best dinamic/relationship ever. And you can't convince me otherwise.
Arcee must be really proud of all his nephew achievements
There’s one episode in season two, where it’s practically just Scott talking to himself. He voiced four out of six characters who carried the dialogue, it was hilarious.

Fun fact: Rattrap's robot mode in Beast Machines shares a vague similarity to the character model of a one-shot character on Reboot, called "Backup". Not surprising, given that Reboot and Beast Machines share the same production company (Mainframe).

Especially that scene where he's riding on Optimus' back, and says: "Wait! don't tell me you're gonna... JUUUUUUUUUMP!!!!
I liked Rattrap as a kid but recently rewatching Beast Wars & Machines has easily made him my favorite Maximal. His showcase episode in BM literally made me cry and I literally rewatched Beast Wars again just for him, he's so good.
There's early concept art out there for Rattrap that depicts him as a malformed, disabled character who was missing parts of his body. I wonder if that concept was the inspiration for his characterization in Beast Machines.
They made his robot mode look like Pinocchio 3000.

"We're all gonna die." Rattrap, maybe. Also, the best Rattrap and Dinobot scenes ever... are their last back and forth while Dinobot was going into stasis lock, and when Dinobot rode Rattrap while wielding a heavy assault rifle.
Till this day Rattrap is easily one of the best Beast Wars characters and one of my favourite Transformers ever.
I’m still disappointed that they never produced the episode where Rattrap wanted to get Dinobot back by searching for a memory backup in the sunken remains of the Axalon. It really showed how much the relationship between Rattrap and Dinobot meant to him.
And I can never get enough of the “we’re all gonna die” running gag. Especially when he used it during the series finale, where the Nemesis is busy destroying the Ark and Rhinox only provided a very sullen “yup”. Easily one of my favourite moments in the series.
That’s what I liked the most about rattrap, he moaned, whined, and complained every step of the way but he always got the job done and he did it well.
Rattrap was easily my favorite BW character. Being a spy and a rat was just a interesting combo. That fact that he smelled was also so funny to me.

Lets face it, Rattrap is that wiseguy you'd never thought you'd like, but glad he's part of the team! From sabotaging the Preds, escaping the base, to his encounters with Tarrantulus...this little Rat has proven to be great fan fave!
Before the image loaded in, I'd misread the title as "The Basics On Battletrap" and I was like "does he even have basics yet?"
One aspect that wasn't touched on in this video was how Rattrap was reworked in the Japanese version of the show. Renamed "Rattle", basically all of his snark was completely gone, instead he was given more of a skittish, child-like personality, made into a kind of "cute" character than anything else.
Rattrap was always one of my favorites characters in the Beast Wars cartoon, and his hate love relationship with Dinobot was pure awesomeness XD.

What I loved about Rattrap from OG Beastwars was that he presented the biggest challenge to Primal's command. Cheetor was brash, Rhinox went along with almost everything, Dinobot wasn't much of a problem, but Rattrap, he was insubordinate to the core.
Ah man. I remember seeing Rat Trap on the shelf years ago before the show was even a show. I grabbed him because I honestly thought a Transformer that turned into a rat was the dumbest idea ever. His first fig was simple, just switch and flip... But he traveled through about fifteen years and three jobs, always creeping around my desk.
When the show came out, I was honestly surprised at how charismatic he was as a character. Scott MacNeil is a treasure, and his work at making a rat a hero is a testament to that.

It's honestly a good thing that BW never had a more mature rating, considering that if it did I’m convinced that Rattrap would be swearing every five seconds, to the point where each episode would probably be 30 minutes longer.
Rattrap was one of my favorite characters back during the Beat Wars era. I can't believe how long it's been since I thought of him.
The second Transformer toy I got and second favorite Maximal.
Looking back on it, I suspect Mainframe Entertainment may have recycled the face mesh and rigging from young Enzo Matrix to use for the Beast Machines incarnation of Rattrap. Fresh textures to be sure, and on a different body, but I get it, faces are hard, why reinvent the wheel.
Ratrap was great on the Beast Wars and there was great respect between him and Dinobot. Also very funny for the comic relief!!!!!

he wasnt just a bot of questionable morals, he also in his sarcasm led to some of the most crude and borderline sexual jokes in the original series. "Find any new Positions?" which is implied, he saw something of the unmentionable between Silverbolt and Blackarachnia.

Rattrap and Dinobot's arguments were easily some of the best parts of "Beast Wars." Not to mention Rattrap's Brooklyn accent really emphasized his personality.

During a D&D campaign my cousin liked to quote Rattrap's famous line "we're all gonna die" and a few other lines and sounds he's known for so much so that when the kingdom figure came out I bought him one and posed it with crossed legs and arms in a judgmental manner looking into his kitchen, so every time he cooks breakfast in the morning he's got Rattrap judging him 😆
Well written, well executed, a fitting overview for a great character.
It's too bad that we never see Arcee and Rattrap team up in Transformers Kingdom trilogy it would have been a perfect moment to see 2 relates going against a common foe from the past and future
Rattrap is an amazing Maximal although he get a little carried away sometimes but he means well when he helped he fellow Maximals save both Earth & Cybertron from Megatron

It's a missed opportunity that no one's ever made a Beast Wars Arcee toy that's a repaint of Rattrap.
Yeah, seeing as how she's supposedly his aunt. 😂
The closest we got to a Beast era Arcee was a convention exclusive pink repaint of Transmetal 2 BlackArachnia.
Beast Era Arcee transforms into a spider, though. She was featured in the Transformers Universe. It depicts a future timeline where Daniel died in a battle. Arcee, out of grief, isolated herself in her spider form for hundreds of years after going through the upgrade into Maximal, like the rest of the Autobots.

rattrap was my first transformers toy that i got from retail. i was born to late for g1 but was right there at the beginning of beast wars. rattrap will for ever have a place in in heart. not to mention transmetal rattrap was my favorite toy of all time
Rattrap did so many badass stuff in Beast Wars. So odd he turned tech in Beast Machines.

This is my new favorite episode. The crew of the Axalon had a huge impact on my childhood. The voice cast was even the Ocean Dub of DBZ! Whenever I play a game where I have to be smart or sneaky, I feel like im channeling Rattrap lol
Ocean was involved in a TON of cartoons and anime dubs back in the day, everything from Beast wars through the Unicron Trilogy, to DBZ, to Zoids, InuYasha, Mega Man, Darkstalkers, and literally hundreds more. No matter what cartoon channel you watched, you were guaranteed to see at least one show that was voiced by the Ocean actors.

Rattrap and DinoBot and Ravage "Aka Shadow Panther" have always been my favorites of the Beast Wars characters. Grimlock, Wreckgar and Bumblebee in the others.
My favorite moments are when he's constantly sparring with Dinobot, who he calls "Chopper Face", or "Lizard Lips".
When the ratposters ran out of sh!tposts that is anything related to Nazrin (from Touhou) herself and the other rats, they have decided to go for Beast Wars and pick Rattrap for *E X T R A R A T P O S T I N G.*
We need a series of Rattrap and Knockout. Not necessarily the first two to come to mind but so charismatic you don't care how underhanded they are. Maybe Swindle thrown in for good measure.

This episode was everything I had hoped for. Everything I wanted to say about him, you covered and said it better. I didn't even know how much he'd accomplished in the comics until now. Sure dude's an insubordinate little garbage eater who got on everyone's nerves, but I wouldn't have him any other way.

In my school vr game rattrap was in the mission called a thunderous assault where he had been in love with ryuko maktoi and it inraged 00 goalius to the point of him attacking the island who was presumed dead after 00 goalius punched him into a dead rats corpse but was kept alive and he in the game is a sale man who trade gundam model kits for special objects

I’ve been so excited at the prospect of a Rattrap episode of the basics for so long. By far my favourite beast wars character and maybe my favourite transformers character as a whole. I love him for the little scoundrel he is
Awesome video and I was hoping we get a video on Rattrap and I had the original toys (except Beast Machines) and I remember what a hard time it was getting his Transmetal toy and Rattrap may have been a bit unlikable in the series but he always been very entertaining and lovable too.
Rattrap was my first BW toy, I got him BEFORE the show aired. Got it in July at Toys-R-Us (also got Iganius), September was when the preview came out then the series in February.
Later, I had the Wal-Mart version of the Transmetal Rattrap (it was Blue rather than red). And the Beast Machines figure too... after all, Rattrap was the best.
As far as G1 relatives, I pictured Rattrap related to Huffer rather than Arcee cause he shares many of Huffer's pessimistic qualities.
