    The blackwater is most likely because of the leaf litter and is actually quite beneficial to the creatures that will go inside
    However, please perform water changes in this paludarium every 3 days for a month or two, the cement will cause the pH level of the water to skyrocket and you need to change water until it goes back to normal

    • @GaniEmi
      @GaniEmi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      i dont know how inert cement is, speically if isnide an aquarium with lots of water, where reaction with co2 and carbonation can occur, and if it will degrade with time, making the water ph to high for the animals to live in it.

      @@GaniEmi Cement is inert, but it's the fact that minerals and chemicals will slowly seep into the water from the cement after a while, which can last up to two months and is the reason why some cement backgrounds have uneven white marks. pH level will only go down with effective water changes when these minerals and chemicals have seeped into the water to remove

      This comes from a person who has kept vampires and red apples for a good half decade, I rarely see burrowing activity with my vampire crabs and I give them a solid 4-5 inches to burrow in. They all just use the pre-made hides that I put in there!

    Petko just a quick advice from aquarist ;) take water chemistry into conisderation. Get some info about nitrogen cycle in aquarium/paladarium. Check if cement wont change water ph and hardiness drasticly. Crabs are aquatic creatures after all and they need good quality water too ;) YT channel Prime Time Aquatics is very good place to looki it up ;) Good luck. I'm waiting for how it turns out.

      Yes, concrete unsealed will drastically raise alkalinity of water.

    • @3Clod
      @3Clod 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Concrete lowers the PH so most life would die in that tank but he just needs to seal it with a couple layers of epoxy, not that big a deal. Then check the levels with a PH test strip.

    • @onlarry7345
      @onlarry7345 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      3Clod Epoxy makes it really look un natural I would recommend just rinsing the concrete till it no longer affects the ph level of the water. But do you have any other recommendations to get that rocky look without using grout?

    • @3Clod
      @3Clod 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@onlarry7345 ahm, I think rinsing would not stop it from deteriorating and releasing particles in water... Maybe for a while the ph would stay unaffected but after time it would lower again imo...
      As for how to get the rocky feel, well, use rocks to "drape" around the polistirene. That's the best way, again imo.

  • @j128-bit2
    @j128-bit2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +54

    Petko Make sure to check the PH regularly!!! Cement usually raises the ph of the water and it probably won't match the ideal number for the crabs! You may need to do some water changes and it should be fine :)

    As an aquarium fan, I can assure you that you will need some kind of biological filtration for the water. Ammonia will build up from food and animal poo so you need bacteria to convert ammonia tou nitrite and nitrate.

  • @god985
    @god985 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Hey Petko 👋
    The tint to your water is a compound called “tannin“ and it comes from the leaf litter and mangrove wood. It isn’t necessarily harmful, it just softens the water. Unless it changes the ph of your water in a way it is harmful for the crabs, you don’t need to worry about it, just check what ph‘s are acceptable for the crabs and run a water test 👍🏼
    Edit: a friend of mine once kept these crabs and when I showed him this video he said that your enclosure is amazing, but you need to watch out for crevasses that are under water, because the crabs will sometimes try to molt inside of them, get stuck and drown. I really hope this helps you out and keep doing what you‘re doing 🤙🏻

  • @AdriCr4ft
    @AdriCr4ft 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wow I am amazed at every terrarium you have there.
    Really beautiful. You just made me realise how much I dislike seeing a simple glass tank with a paper hide for a spider.
    I knew something looked off I just didn’t know what it could be since I don’t have exotic animals, but now i know. People don’t take the effort to plant their tanks and make it look natural.
    It makes the creatures even more beautiful and interesting to see in an enclosure like that.
    Really amazing.

  • @justinclement5572
    @justinclement5572 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Love the fact that you have set up the enclosure and have it running before the animals and even ready to go inside. Hobbyists should focus more on setup for comfort of said creature living inside.

  • @thebaconbrotato
    @thebaconbrotato 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Petko, I think the tint in the water is from tannins that may have leached out from the wood. They're a yellowish or brownish bitter-tasting organic substance present in some galls, barks, and other plant tissues. They shouldn't hurt the crabs, just lower the PH of the water slightly.

  • @MrKradzy
    @MrKradzy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    As someone who have those little cuties, they like to dig, they're real good at it(you Halloween crab dug as well, remember) so yeah do what you want with that.

  • @EddVCR
    @EddVCR 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I can’t wait for you to House some crabs in there! It will be a super nice home for them!
    The tint is tannic acid most likely released from driftwood. Water tinted with tannin is called black water, and while it does occur in nature, I don’t know the effect it has on vampire crabs.

  • @ZoeBellCake
    @ZoeBellCake 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    the dark tint to the water is from the leaves. Dead leaves produce tannins which are actually quite beneficial for fish and other aquatic life. I used to put Indian almond leaves in my betta fish enclosures regularly for this reason.

  • @ceelocero4079

    The tint comes from the tannins from the wood and leaf litter, it would get more brown as it ages since you didnt water log the wood, boiling leaves before puting em in reduces the tint but leaves the brown color that you like at a more aesthetic level.

  • @forfun212678
    @forfun212678 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The tea like colored water is from the wood releasing tannins in the water. There are places where the water is almost black because it has so much in it. They tend to call it black water and a lot of people in the fish tank hobby have made tanks like that to replicate the wild.

  • @josephkwiatkowski2735

    I’ll repeat what others are saying about the nitrogen if you don’t already know about it. I’ll also throw out that cherry shrimp and vampire crabs get along in my experience if you want to have another critter in with them. Probably only one or two though as the water portion isn’t huge and you’ll have the vampire crabs in the water as well.

    The sound of a waterfall is calming. People download that sound to fall asleep. All this stuff with glue youre adding is going to mess with ph of the water . also toxic fumes from glue on styrofoam . you need to put some plants or something in that water to remove the ammonia from pee and poo also.

    Hi Petko, I love your chanel! But I have to tell there is some problem with this enclosure, vampire crabs are terrestrial crab and they love to dig, got some myself (to different species) i'm on a fb group for beginner we tell a ratio of 2/3 land and 1/3 water, and betwen 5 and 10cm of substrat over the water level.
    it's almost the same as dart frog with more water.
    The size of the enclosure will be ok for a couple or a trio, but when they will have baby (and they will! mine got baby 1month after i get them) it will be crowded really quick.
    For the plant, you can put anibias, bucephalandra, every kind of aquarium plant, in and outside the water, and lot of moss (they love javamoss).
    If you need more info you can ask whenever you want, i'll be glad to help you :)
    sorry if i made some fault english is not my native language :)

    The colour is because of the bog wood but it's nothing to worry about . Looking forward to seeing your crabs when they arrive. 🦀🦀🦀♥️

    That looks amazing, but speaking from experience the vampire crabs may munch your Isopods 😊

    Hi Petko just asking due to common interest that can you please tell that what is the purpose of adding isopods.

    • @kodavulpedrius6712
      @kodavulpedrius6712 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If petko doesn't answer, it's because they help clean out larger bits of waste and organic matter, they will feed on the excrement, they eat sheds and sometimes moults depending on the animal, they help break down larger masses of decaying matter like wood and leaves. They will even eat certain unwanted fungi. They also in addition fertilise the plants with THEIR own refined excreta.
