- Adam Kinzinger was a U.S. representative from Illinois from 2011 until 2023 and was one of two Republicans to serve on the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol. Prior to his election to Congress, Kinzinger served in the Air Force and continues to serve as a pilot in the Air National Guard. He is the author of “Renegade: Defending Democracy and Liberty in Our Divided Country.”
The following interview was conducted by Kirk Documentary Group’s Mike Wiser for FRONTLINE on Oct. 31, 2023. It has been edited for clarity and length.

In 1997, I attended the Primary Leadership Development Course (PLDC) to become a Sergeant. In one of the classes I learned there were two types of courage. Physical courage and moral courage. Physical courage putting you life at risk and moral courage is standing up for what is right. Physical courage will earn you medals and moral courage will earn you enemies.

Respectfully disagree. The impeachments, the J6 hearings and now the use of the Justice system against President Trump was and is the antithesis of courage. I did watch the hearings. I really appreciate the integrity, objectivism, and sheer willingness to expend the energy digging - of Kinzinger and Cheney especially and also of all of the other members of the Jan 6 Cmte. I waited with bated breath for each hearing and listened while working during the workday for each of them. I'm super concerned about the state of this country but this was such a great display of how real statesmen and stateswomen should be conducting themselves.

Your series about Putin made me feel so refreshed on the recent history of the state of affairs with Russia (you don't hear the news reminding you the context and nuances that we're so quick to forget when analyzing the present), and I'm so thrilled to see this series published.

I give Kinzinger all the credit and not bowing to immense pressure. If we dodge the Trump bullet we need more like senators like this to fix the damage done to the Republicans.
Not bowing to pressure was a key element in the traits of individuals who hid Jewish people from the Nazi's, under the threat of death. Kinzinger has shown us the ultimate trait of selflessness. It is indeed so sad that most Republicans do not have this trait.
He was an F-16 fighter pilot. Those things have one engine, and limited backup power for flight controls and electricity. Sitting in one is like a bathtub; there's not a lot of room to stretch out or take a piss. Adam was used to pressure and discomfort. Ejecting from one of those is similar to bailing off a motorcycle that's going 40 mph, or being thrown off a galloping horse; but with the added risk of cavitating your eyeballs and sinuses with air rushing at 300+ mph. He has demonstrable courage and integrity. I would be proud to say I crewed his jet; I'm almost certain I did not.
Liz Cheney evokes similar feelings of respect and inspiration / admiration.

That Adam has a military background and had the guts to do what he did and continues to do - like he said it is like war. Yes…and they brought to light so much that we hadn’t known. Watching the coverage just enraged me afresh with each one, wondering how our country could have fallen so far to let that happen, and thanking GOD (and the wonderful men and women who were defending and protecting our congress people and our country). I thank Adam and Liz for their part in this and for keeping the pressure on by continuing to speak out.

I am a republican and I voted for Agent Orange the first time. My thoughts at the time was this has to be better than politics as usual and certainly better than Clinton. As it turned out it is far worse that politics as usual. What a circus that guy creates where ever he goes! I can't believe what has obviously happened to my republican party.

"Go to the capital and fight like hell" This what he told his mob of MAGAs..The reason he waited so long to do anything is he wanted to see if his mob would be successful in stopping the election certification. Maybe by hanging Mike Pence?? His crazy response to the election results are the epitome of his lack of concern for our democracy. He lost 60 court cases trying to prove fraud. Some of the presiding judges were appointed by Orange himself. He spreads unproven conspiracy theories and people believe them. It must be mass hypnosis that convinces people that this narcissistic playground bully is the right man for the job of president.

If Kinzinger and Cheney wanted to stand up for truth, they should have refused to serve on that committee until it was balanced with Republican members.
