- Bennie Thompson served as the chairman of the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol. Thompson has represented Mississippi in the U.S. House of Representative since 1993.
The following interview was conducted by Kirk Documentary Group’s Mike Wiser for FRONTLINE on Oct. 24, 2023. It has been edited for clarity and length.

Mr Thompson, thank you for displaying your values and integrity during the Jan 6 hearings. And thank you for your service; to all that served on that committee. I am impatiently waiting for justice & accountability to be served. I watched Jan 6 live on TV and literally broke down and cried. It was like that crowd was cutting a hole in my heart. It is dark days but we have had them before. There are still Americans who care about the truth and I for one will ring that bell.

Nancy Pelosi was a genius in choosing Bennie Thompson. I salute you, sir. Bravo leadership.
She did the same with Jamie Raskin and the impeachment hearing. I listened to his book and he spoke of it and what it meant to him during such immense loss. She seems to have been an outstanding leader in a lot of ways, including knowing her reps souls.

Steven A. Sund, the Capitol Police chief also reminds America that Pelosi utilized him as a scapegoat and forced him to step down as Police chief. We all know now she was just trying to obfuscate her own responsibility for the attack.
Greg Murphy (R-N.C.) said. "What happened on Jan. 6 was unforgivable but the conditions were set forth by the former speaker and two sergeants at arms." Pelosi turned down their request several times for National Guard reinforcements.
It was reported Friday that House Republicans discovered how Pelosi’s staffers deliberately weakened security at the U.S. Capitol for Jan.6 and ordered a cover-up. Steven A. Sund, the Capitol Police chief on that fateful day, not only confirms her culpability along with the rest of the Democratic leadership, but also how his own agency and the intelligence community let the Capitol attack happen.
The Washington Post acquired an advance copy of Sund’s book “Courage Under Fire,” which will be released on Tuesday. He unveils his perspective on what happened, who he most blames (not Donald Trump), and why America still remains vulnerable to a similar attack.
Sund also reminds America that Pelosi utilized him as a scapegoat and forced him to step down as Police chief. We all know now she was just trying to obfuscate her own responsibility for the attack.
“The FBI, the Department of Homeland Security and even his own agency’s intelligence unit had been alerted weeks earlier to reams of chilling chatter about right-wing extremists arming for an attack on the Capitol that day, Sund says, but didn’t take the basic steps to assess those plots or sound an alarm. Senior military leaders, citing political or tactical worries, delayed sending help.”
Sund said he was never warned about those red flags the FBI, DHS and his own intelligence unit had received: plots for protesters to come armed, attack Capitol tunnels and be willing to shoot police.
“Three days before Jan. 6, in anticipation of large crowds, Sund had asked that the National Guard be placed on standby. But his request was batted down by the two sergeants-at-arms hired by Senate and House leaders; Sund says he later learned the two believed that Pelosi would never allow it.”
“Sund resigned a day after the riot when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) publicly called for him to step down over the department’s inability to secure the Capitol.”
Sund writes that senior leaders in his department failed, too: The “biggest intelligence failure was within my department,” he wrote.
“Starting on Dec. 21 and continuing to Jan. 5, the Capitol Police intelligence division had received emails and tips that carried frightening warnings about plots for Jan. 6. Intelligence collected on Dec. 21 revealed that prospective rallygoers were discussing how to coordinate an attack using the Capitol’s underground tunnel system, and attaching a map of the complex. They urged burning down the homes of Pelosi and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.).”
“Sund reserves his greatest outrage for those Pentagon leaders, recounting a conference call he had with two generals about 2:35 p.m., 20 minutes after rioters had broken into the Capitol and as Vice President Mike Pence and other lawmakers scurried to hiding places.”
“Sund writes that Lt. Gen. Walter Piatt told him he didn’t like the optics of sending uniformed Guard troops to the Capitol but could allow them to replace police officers at roadside checkpoints. Listening incredulously and trying to explain that he needed help to save officers’ lives, Sund said, he felt both “nauseated” and “mad as hell.”
“He warns that many flaws in his agency’s power structure - in which congressional leaders’ political concerns can overrule the chief’s security judgments - remain.”
“He recommends that congressional leaders empower future Capitol Police chiefs to execute their own security plans alone, rather than having to report to a three-member Capitol Police Board made up of the House and Senate sergeants-at-arms and the architect of the Capitol, a cumbersome structure that he says makes it impossible for the chief to act independently.”
Sund says Nancy Pelosi and General Mark Milley had information to suggest problems on Capitol Hill yet refused to share the information and refused to call in the National Guard before January 6th and during the early rioting that day. That sounds like a “setup!”
It appears we’ve found the guilty parties and it WASN’T DONALD TRUMP!
Ex-Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund told lawmakers on Tuesday during a hearing before the Senate Rules and Homeland Security committees that he did not get the FBI report warning of violence on January 6.
The FBI issued a report January 5, one day before the riot at the Capitol dome building that detailed calls for violence.
Mr. Sund said his department had received the FBI report, but it never reached his office.
During Sund’s conversation with Tucker Carlson the notorious instigator Ray Epps was brought up.
Sund told Tucker Carlson “it’s not crazy” to wonder about Epps and his role in the riots.
He has been identified the man as Ray Epps from Arizona.
Epps was later filmed hurling a massive Trump sign at the Capitol Police during the rioting.
And Ray Epps was also leading protesters through two different sets of police barricades at the US Capitol.
Pelosi’s staffers deliberately weakened security on Jan.6 and ordered a cover-up. Sund, the Police chief says on that fateful day, not only confirms her culpability along with the Dem leadership.
That lineup stank as bad as the Democratic 2020 candidates with the exception of Tulsi Gabbard.
Excellent effort by the committee presenting all the facts and witnesses. It's unfortunate that MAGAS don't even care to see it and prefer to believe Trump's lies and unsubstantiated facts.

What I've witnessed is people putting their own personal gain over that of their party and democracy. I feel when choices were made they weren't for the party. I think many were thinking along the lines of "what on earth will I do if I no longer have this job/position that makes me feel important? Look for another job? No! Too scary plus everything from here will clearly be a step down/back. Better not to think about the consequences of my actions which are to sell out our country and our democracy." Unfortunately this is what I have seen happen during the course of my working career and saw it again.

You can tell he he wanted to make someone pay for his growing up. And how can you say Good Job When the only thing they wanted to do was to Take TRUMP down at any cost. He admitted they destroyed evidence exonerating Trump that also proves it was a Fed Surrection. All of the J6 members will be subpoenaed in 2025 to testify under oath in the new real investigation.

I strongly urge people to re-watch the J6 Committee's hearings. It's easy to forget the depth of the information they put forward.
Benie Thompson is an American treasure...just hearing him speak of his personal experiences in the South is a keen reminder of "times long past," but for myself, as an American Native Californian, even after living through that same "period"....it always seemed strange and crazy that the disparity between White and Black existed so brazenly backward and openly cruel. He made a wise choice in Liz Cheney....strategic and balanced. Living in our "bubble" in the West, we suffer a different type of dispossession, where our "acceptance" depends on our ability to become invisible (assimilation & colonization)!!!

The Jan. 6th Select Committee deserves our respect and gratitude. Ably chaired by Bennie Thompson and Liz Cheney, they calmly, concisely laid out the facts their investigation uncovered (despite all obstruction!), in riveting public hearings. They reminded all of us of what we watched unfold, four years back. The Repugnithug Mob doesn’t like that, of course - they hate losing. Ironically, I didn't much like him at first. But the tactics used by his opponents are ghastly, anathema to Western values and imo illegal. His perseverance is admirable. And I think that the behaviour of the democrats towards this particular political opponent is evil enough that supporting Donald Trump is supremely important.
