So profound... "Bears spend 100% of the time being bears. Tree frogs spend all their time being tree frogs. We as humans spend all our time trying to be someone else" Stephen Fry
Really profound is an audience (both live, and now on TH-cam) spending their (our) time distracted by this talk show... I'm not sure "to be someone else" is accurate. Possibly more along the lines of: "trying not to be ourselves (because of an Ego, Id and SuperId)". Who's up for a lobotomy and a return to the trees??? Anyone???
Fry entirely understood what kind of phenomenon and animal Williams was. He appreciated it and moderated both himself and Williams as a schoolteacher might a gifted, but disruptive student. A wonderful union.
Dunno if that works... Both Fry and Williams are being moderated. I suspect that you may underestimate Williams’ self-awareness and Fry’s insecurities.
Mr Fry is a very intelligent person, but he's not looking at Robin, like a trouble student,Mr Fry knows Robin is in intellectual himself, Respect to All them,RIP Robin and Mr, Parkinson
@@bgknowable This. Robin Williams truly was a genius and Fry knew he was no where near. I did find it disturbing to watch Fry attempt his superiority complex on Robin with the oh so polite slurs that did little more than show the jealously you could hear behind them. But when you're as gifted as Robin was, you don't only get to ignore them, you can even play along with them. To be honest, Fry came across as a stuck-up bore.

I think it's quite good. Stephen tolerates Robin's interjections, but by the same token, Robin shuts up when Stephen is making an important point. It seems fairly balanced to me...
It's like when you're with your mates and everybody is constantly interrupting each other, but it doesn't matter so long as it's funny. And,hell, it's not like it's important, it's just words. What a loss Robin was
"Stephen tolerates Robin's interjections, but by the same token, Stephen shuts up when Robin is making an important point. It seems fairly balanced to me..." That's true (corrected).
No no. He wasn't. He was just a bit overwhelmed. A man who was used to overwhelming others was himself overwhelmed. It was bound to shake him up a bit. You can see the mutual admiration and affection.
Having seen Stephen's heartfelt comments on Robin's passing, I find 'it's so nice to be the quiet one' brings tears to my eyes. Stephen's own mental health struggles were rarely (rightly) seen onscreen, and the different struggles Robin had played out even more in public. I find this a joyous, jazzesque riffing of tessellating styles, enhanced by Parkinson's unfettered relish of his ringside seat.
Stephen Fry and Robin Williams are two incredibly witty, talented gentleman who share the bipolar diagnosis. Watching this, it becomes even more obvious how complex this disorder is, and perhaps why people without it struggle to comprehend why the cure for depression isn't just to "cheer up" or "think positive", or the cure for mania isn't just to "settle down" or "get off the drugs" or "shut up". There's no one-size-fits-all 'easy' cure because the illness affects its targets so differently, at different times and in different ways. In 2006, Stephen Fry made a documentary in conjunction with the BBC called 'The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive' - highly recommended viewing, particularly for many in the comments who don't seem to grasp (or care) how serious this diagnosis is or just how little our brains are understood. Learn and grow. Rest in Peace, Robin Williams.
Tk you for your insightful respectful comment. Much appreciated. Also a great fan of John Cleese who is very interesting on the role comedy plays, even more widely, in our ability to navigate through life. What I have always admired and loved about both men is their bravery in being publicly vulnerable; I know it continues to help a myriad of people, even if on a basic level to lighten ones mood, of course goes deeper but I thank god for these two wonderful human beings. When Robin Williams died -- not sure if people are aware that he was diagnosed with Parkinsons -- it was for a time as if a family member was gone. Good to celebrate him, RIP and long may you carry on Stephen Fry! Saw Mythos at Niagara-on-the-Lake; fantastic one man brilliant sustained monologue.
Robin wasn't bipolar as Fry is. Robin got cut down in life too many times and he made the mistake of getting old. Once he contracted the chronic, irreversable, untreatable and rapidly developing condition he knew it was end game, so he hung himself. I think a lot of people, myself included, would do the same thing. Put your friends, your children through that? No thanks. He'd had an amazing life, made hundreds of millions of people laugh to tears. What can be better than that?
Could not imagine a more distinct interview pairing! I love the way Fry absorbed Robin's jokes and interruptions and the way Robin controlled himself in certain moments to allow Fry to complete his point. Robin was unique. Fry is too.
I was surprised that some viewers thought there was some discontent between Fry and Robin. Growing up with British and American humour I can tell you there was a perfect harmony between the two men. It would be interesting to see if any, Robin’s first appearance on a British show.
It's called passive aggressive - insult followed by a compliment. The more perceptive viewers will pick up on this (it would be hard to not notice it). Yes he likely respected Robin - but it's hard to ignore all the subtle (not really that subtle) intricacies of this interview. At certain points Fry was unquestionably irritated and quite dismissive of Williams (and even the audience for laughing). A little ego..a little jealousy perhaps.
@@Weird-City Can Williams do anyhing else but always those situational impersonations? I would love to see Harry Enfield parody this interview. interviewer: Regarding your book.. Stephen Fry and Robin Williams both demonstrate an incredibly high level of sensitivity and creativity. They are giants in intellect and humor, and humanity. Robin Williams will always be remembered with love and reverence.
A lot of mutual respect going on here between two seasoned experienced professionals who we should both celebrate as leaders of their respective fields. It's Fry's spot but he is celebrating William's interjections and earning his space back because of the permission he is affording. This is a comedy masterclass!

I admire Stephen Fry's slim chances to having a proper interview, he was so creative in complimenting Robin Williams, while trying to get back to his work..... so good to watch now. Thanks for uploading.
When Robin goes off into one of his Shakespearean soliloquies it's so perfect that people don't believe it's not scripted. I saw him do it on Charlie Rose (for a full five minutes) and it was simply incredible. The funniest man in history and a tragic loss for us all
If you watch some of the rushes and cut scenes from good morning Vietnam you'll see him riffing for minutes on end, all unscripted, it really is quite a remarkable skill...
He did it in his first interview with Johnny Carson, too, when Mork and Mindy was still on. More people should remember that he was trained by Houseman, but few people under 50 know who that is.
I saw him reading fairy tales to kids at the opening of the San Francisco Public Library in the mid-1990s. While delighting the kids with his voices and impressions, he was simultaneously keeping up a profanity-free, but very much adult-oriented sotto voce commentary that kept their parents in stitches. I’ve never seen anything like it. Robin Williams was beyond a shadow of a doubt a comic genius.
The level of wit in this interview in incomprehensible 😂😂😂 Fry's hardcore satire met with William's full blast sarcasm is the recipe for humor nuclear 👌 Rest peacefully Mr Williams, and age gracefully Mr Fry ❤❤❤

A lovely comment befitting these amazing men...Parkinson as well balanced this out and provided the third leg of this amazing moment to cherish...hope for humanity somewhat restored albeit a bittersweet feeling with the loss of our dear friend Robin...RIP sweet Prince.
This is the first time I've ever seen Stephen Fry not just matched intellectually, but actually struggle to keep up with someone else - what a legend Robin Williams was.
@@colinwalsh5203 lol. Im not gonna try to convince you. Just cause you dont find him funny doesnt mean others cant. Hes known as a funny comidian and you know that.
The script writers in Mork & Mindy use to leave blank spaces because they knew Robin would just take it from the top of his head better than anything they could write. That was the level he performed at. Genius.
Stephen Fry tweeted two days ago that Robin Williams "was a prince" during an interview he had forgotten this past week. I think that puts all of this silliness to bed. If you notice early in the interview, Fry wanted to engage Williams. It's subtle, but Fry lit the fire. Fry engaged Williams into the conversation, so all of you people who thought Williams was self-absorbed either had an agenda, or don't understand human behavior.
One thing I love about Robin Williams. He can be manic as all hell, you watch his interview with Craig Ferguson, and he never stops. But for significant periods of time he sits there listening intently to Stephen. The man had a switch, I swear.
I think they genuinely respect one another and they play off each other well in this interview. They have quite a similar background, both having/had mental problems (Fry, bipolar/Williams, I presume, depression), cocaine addiction and being/was highly intelligent. What some interpret as Fry's condescending demeanour towards Williams,I think is his dry humour which I believe Williams appreciated. They both come off as very kind people. The interview was really enjoyable to watch and I cannot understand all the comments bashing either Fry or Williams.
AmateurishTraveller i totally agree, i see people claiming that Fry was mocking Williams which frankly is totally incorrect - also, you are correct they both have similar backgrounds with mental illness, but in fact more similar than you thought, they both are/were bipolar
They were both each others heroes.... that's the beauty of true stars with natural gifts....I remember watching an interview where Phil Collins and Robert Palmer were both guests- they spent half an hour being completely blown away that they were sitting next to each other... wonderful
You've got to admire both Stephen's and Robin's restraint. Robin for letting such a high percentage of the millions of jokes per second he knows he can absolutely kill with slide, and Stephen for being interrupted twice a minute.
how did he possibly come up with the classical porn bit?! how can any human possibly think that quickly, that wittily, and with such energy and passion!? he truly was a great talent, and will be sorely sorely missed....
Watch an early stand up concert of his called 'reality..what a concept'. It's brilliant. And there is a point where he asks for audience suggestions. First name of a writer, audience said Shakespeare. A place -audience said Mars....and I now forget the third. But he went off on an improvised 10-15 min riff in Shakespearean , that was part sci fi, classical, etc. It was brilliant. And it showed there is no way he rehearsed that, as it was from audience suggestions
You know you will have a huge mountain to climb when you are going to try and pitch your book ,film etc and you have the Majestic Mr Williams beside you on the same gig ........The balance of humour between Stephen Fry And Robin Williams was fantastic!
The moment that this popped up as a suggestion to watch I knew it would be worth it. Both have/had the ability to completely dominate interview shows, which have always made them absolutely enjoyable.
There are very few people that I would associate with the term 'genius'. But I really have to say, Mr.Robin Williams in my humble opinion truly and fully encompasses that definition. RIP Robin.
Why has this video caused so much butthurt in the comments? Fry and Williams are both great in their own way and obviously have a mutual respect for each other.
I can’t say I agree. Robin is being Robin...truly verbal diarrhea as Fry points out. Fry just simply tolerates his outbursts, which destroy any hope of the discourse building upon itself. I think Robin Williams was brilliant but also incredibly annoying. He doesn’t bust in out of malice or ego, however...he just can’t help it. Usually harmless fun but when he is sharing the stage with someone at least as smart but also more thoughtful and aware his presence diminishes the moment.
I wish all my lessons as a child had been taught by these two! Stephen captivating you in wonderment and Robin making the knowledge stick by making you howl!
This was fab, Fry says ‘Take a line for a walk ‘ & Robin swaps it for ‘taking a joke for a walk, & adds ‘Abuse it & then bring it home’, right there sums up Robins wit & reason sharp mind in a millisecond, love & miss this incredible human being so much, I for one will always keep watching his material!
I feel sorry for the people who watched this video not really being familiar with Fry and therefore used the opportunity to revere Williams and berate Fry for simply being his usual interesting self. A tiny bit of mental sophistication and you would have noticed just how much Fry surreptitiously complimented Williams' genius throughout the interview, without getting down on his knees and bowing down to him ...
Yeah I agree. Mr. Fry who is pure class in my view, was able to acknowledge the genius of Robyn without being a grovel. I reckon Stephen was a little in awe of him to be honest. That would have been a little difficult to keep the interview on a straight line, but he managed somewhat to keep Robyn at bay...you give him the freedom and he just takes off...lol....I love them both so much....
* * Fry is an intellectual first. With an IQ so high, some who don't get him can't count that high...just saying. Williams is a genus as well. They are however in my mind not comparable. They are separate gifts to humanity, each in his own right.
I watch this and think of Robin Williams suicide and Stephen Fry’s admission that he had contemplated suicide on more than one occasion. Both of these men are wonderful, intelligent, charming and delight audiences. Both have made millions laugh and brought us joy. Robin Williams suicide was tragic and his loss to show business is still palpable years later. I just wish they could both be as happy as the joy they bring others. Both of these men are very simply comedy geniuses and masters of quick thinking. RIP Robin Williams and Stephen Fry, you are so loved and admired, I just hope you know that.
It is remarkable that someone other than Jonathan Winter can actually stand up to Robin Williams on an interview show. It puts Stephen Fry in very rare company.
In a way they make an incredible double act Robin rifting and Steven feeding back on the rifts with his amazing observations and putting them into context. Neither is overwhelmed by the other both incredible respect, and at the some time not frightened to tell it as it is. LOVE IT!!
This was pretty hilarious. British humor is simply so distinct, and to see these two men entertain us while ribbing each other with respectful comedy, is really nice to see. I enjoyed this interview
Fry & Williams, two of the snappiest wits to ever embrace the English language from two countries separated by a common language, had some other similarities; problems with impulse control and bouts of severe depression. It's a bitter irony that Parkinson's namesake here could be referenced as the last straw for Robin, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, a tragic added burden that may have been too much for him. We the audience, could enjoy their brilliantly entertaining, spontaneous, rapid-fire banter without paying the price as they did for their 'mad genius'.
***** Don't feel too bad. All of us humans are flawed to some extent, each in his own ways. The discovery of one's own strengths is where continuity and the overall value of life reside.
Well..., apart from Stephen's knowledge and Robin's fun... Bears of Peru...? What..., 2 - 3 of them...? What about the brown ones, latest in Europe, from my country, in Europe, Romania...? Just asking you..., producers of this clip...?
i guess Im asking randomly but does anybody know a way to log back into an instagram account?? I somehow lost my password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me
I can't help thinking, watching this, that if Stephen could somehow have known what would eventually happen in that wonderful man next to him's head at the end of his life, that Stephen would have done what so many of us would now want to do and given Robin a proper hug - sort of on behalf of the world. You can see now with the benefit of hindsight the star burning just too bright. Stephen is very rightly described as a national treasure. Robin was a world treasure, a meteor arcing across the heavens, brief but so special.
First time I saw Mork & Mindy, that was my thought... Burning both end's of the candle... But such an amazing fast and free intellect! Nothing could stop him, he just went around, or made a triple salto over your head...
What stands out for me is that the studious and respected Stephen Fry has a genuine respect for the natural intellect he comments on when referring to the comparison between a Cambridge professor and Robin Williams. Where a lot of commentors here miss the mark is that Stephen never suffers clowns but always holds great intellect in high regard.
true. I have watched it now again after reading some comments, and I have to strongly disagree with the opinion Fry would be annoyed by Williams. Somewhat overwhelmed at times, maybe. But two great minds for sure. And Fry knew who would sit next to him as well. Great interview. Parkinson is his usual self as well, making him one of the best interviewers on TV.
The master of British television interviewers Parkinson quietly allows his comic genius guests to interact at a mind boggling furiously funny pace. The rest of us mortals are only left to wonder and enjoy the intellectual wit and comedy sarcasm of these two off the wall brilliant artists.Hilarious and moving.
paul cunliffe exactly my thoughts. Anybody who reads something else in the banter between these two are too much riding any of the many possible ego's between the two Anglo-saxon nations. Brilliant, both of them. And please get a grip of the actual show this is part of before anybody posts some ridiculous comment. The godfather of interviews being an artist himself in this interview with Stephen, while just before had a great interview with Robin. Gusts are welcomed to interject, but the guest interviewed is center stage here. And he (SF) was VERY gentleman like in his approach, with his well known wit added to that mix. Great show, great men.
I’m only 2minutes in but browsed comments first. My first impression is how well mannered they ALL are, compared to other, newer, usually American, interviews/talk shows. Usually each guest just monopolises the show until their time is up, but both Robin and Stephen are more like (well mannered) actual guests. They are including each other, almost deferring, as they speak. Edit, at the end. First impressions didn’t lie. The show continued like that. Stephen, I think, was one of the few who could hold his own*,against Robin, without appearing desperate to get attention returned to him . Two *very* intelligent, quick witted people, prepared to share a stage equally. This was a real treat, thank you, dear Uploader, and compliments on choosing that name, but its not quite apt, nothing is ever erased on the internet, is it? I’d love to know the story there. {*”hold his own” as someone who loves words and wordplays, and has a questionable sense of humour, I can’t believe I’ve never, until now, thought how,....umm,...lwell, let’s say odd, that phrase is? }
I love both of these men, for their differences as well as the comic genius. I miss Robin’s outlook on life, as his brilliance. Glad Stephen is still with us.
Fantastic. I remember watching this on television when it was aired and laughed all evening. He just was such a natural entertainer and making it look so easy as well.
@21:21 Stephen Fry cannot believe what he has just witnessed, and is laughing so hard! Making another comedian laugh is not an easy thing to do, but Robin could make ANYBODY laugh! He was so gifted. We miss him very much.
Fry and Williams played off each other incredibly well and to me it seems they had a mutual respect for each other and admiration not unlike a Laurel and Hardy type interaction and out of all the Williams interviews I have seen I actually like this one more than any I've ever watched, it seemed to bring the best out of both of them. R.I.P. Robin Williams
A brilliant interview. I miss Robin Williams. They are both highly intelligent and have a lot of respect for each other. I feel that Stephen was happy that Robin was there and pretty sure he would had the option to be the first guest. It's a shame that they never became good friends as Stephen Fry would have been a good person for Robin to go to with his problems.
Thoroughly enjoying this and nearly made it all the way through before remembering that Robin is no longer with us. His hyper kinetic energy and contagious joy makes it difficult to imagine him as being dead.
Here's how generous a human being Stephen Fry is: He is a trained improvisationist, and used to be on the original "Whose Line is it Anyway?" series...and never once does he bring it up, instead giving Robin all the credit and publicly lauding his skills. Such a class act.

Yes. Clever and perceptive.

What a loss Robin was
Peter Clack yes two absolute masters and professionals
"Stephen tolerates Robin's interjections, but by the same token, Stephen shuts up when Robin is making an important point. It seems fairly balanced to me..."
That's true (corrected).
I thought Stephen was rather rude/snarky to Robin frankly..
No no.
Well put
Beautifully said :) I haven't seen Stephen's heart felt comments as you share. Will endeavour to look them up xxx
I felt Stephen had difficulty in this interview tbh
So well put
How lucky we have been to have lived in their time.
I just watched all 3 episodes of that program and I was glad I did. I have a friend that is bi-polar among other things and I have better insight now.
Do you ever wish some interviews wouldn't end? This was brilliant! Three men I admire greatly on absolute top form.
What joy I feel to see 2 men who capture the world of comedy, drama, pathos and wonder. I am blessed to see them together.
The respect was clear when Fry was basically saying Williams was a comic genius! When he said ‘People think it’s rehearsed’

Stephen Fry and Robin Williams both demonstrate an incredibly high level of sensitivity and creativity. They are giants in intellect and humor, and humanity. Robin Williams will always be remembered with love and reverence.
The moments when Robin throws his head back in laughter never fails to brighten my mood.
A lot of mutual respect going on here between two seasoned experienced professionals who we should both celebrate as leaders of their respective fields. It's Fry's spot but he is celebrating William's interjections and earning his space back because of the permission he is affording. This is a comedy masterclass!

Stephen Fry tweeted two days ago that Robin Williams "was a prince" during an interview he had forgotten this past week. I think that puts all of this silliness to bed. If you notice early in the interview, Fry wanted to engage Williams. It's subtle, but Fry lit the fire.
How can anyone watch Robin's manic behavior and not realize he's bipolar?
At least we still have Fry.
Well put. Totally agree
I personally think that fry and robin were a very interesting combination. I would have loved to see a film with both of them in it.

I really enjoyed that comment! Reminded me there are intelligent life forms out there, capable of understanding nuance.
How dare they. Fry is to Britain what Williams was to the U.S., to say the least.

Fry was a total twat from start to finish.
Those two are absolutely adorable together.
Simply brilliant to throw these two great characters together.

In short, high IQ is a must to produce such quick wit.
I’m only 2minutes in but browsed comments first. My first impression is how well mannered they ALL are, compared to other, newer, usually American, interviews/talk shows. Usually each guest just monopolises the show until their time is up, but both Robin and Stephen are more like (well mannered) actual guests. They are including each other, almost deferring, as they speak.
Edit, at the end. First impressions didn’t lie. The show continued like that. Stephen, I think, was one of the few who could hold his own*,against Robin, without appearing desperate to get attention returned to him . Two *very* intelligent, quick witted people, prepared to share a stage equally. This was a real treat, thank you, dear Uploader, and compliments on choosing that name, but its not quite apt, nothing is ever erased on the internet, is it? I’d love to know the story there.
{*”hold his own” as someone who loves words and wordplays, and has a questionable sense of humour, I can’t believe I’ve never, until now, thought how,....umm,...lwell, let’s say odd, that phrase is? }
