Children are pretty rare in DCS, so finding one online is a weird, funny experience. I have seen that *exact* child online before and he was one of like 5 sub 16 years olds i have knowingly talked to in the community, but most people are very nice about it. Dunno if he still is playing as i havent seen him on a server in a couple months, but i hope he still is. Fun is not age exclusive.

true but its honestly very hard to get into unless you have friends which were probablly killed in all the warcrimes you commited in arma 3
I'd always ignored it because of the hardware requirements (including sorta, HOTAS). Recently I went "Oh hey I can probably run that now", downloaded the base version to play with MNK 'cause why the hell not.
Oh _boy_ Yeah it's good.
I have DCS, I love simulators, I don't have the time to get into DCS. The new Modern Air Combat promises of being a more accessible DCS for everyone, so I'm waiting for that
The problem with DCS is that, barrier to entry is quite possibly the highest I can think of.
Suppose you already have a decent PC, you still need to drop 400 bucks for HOTAS and trackir if you want proper experience. Next are the modules... well you saw them in the video. While a single one can cost more than most games, at least they also provide about the same amount of "stuff to do". Plus the Hornet alone kind of "unlocks" everything DCS has to offer.
And then there's the learning curve. Let's just say, we're only partialy joking when we say, if you can fly a particular jet in DCS, you can fly it in real life (at least for high fidelity modules).
It's a very esoteric "game" and with that barrier to entry, good luck recruiting someone into it. Simply put, the exact reason we love it so much, is what makes people sleep on it.
Sure there are games like Dota, where basic training is like 1000 hours, but at least it costs nothing and you can still get away playing casually only knowing a few champions. That's not really something you can get away with in DCS.
Do you know a game with higher barrier to entry? I wanna hear it.
niche games like DCS will always be obscure and unpopular.

@@sanjacobs6261 yep it used to be a large multi nation, multi branch exercise, I did one in Germany before the gulf war started and real world shit took precedence.
The first time I played foxhole I charged and enemy trench, was wounded, was then carried back to enemy trench by an enemy medic, was then healed by said medic, and then executed for crimes against their country.
I also ran around with 4 other high rank players (as a complete newbie) in amphibious armored cars sabotaging enemy armor.
12/10 would be executed again

First time I played that game, I found a sqaud of guys with two half-tracks (this was when the game first came out) we ended up thinking of a plan to penetrate a heavily defended town. We end up spending 30 minutes penetrating this town in the most chaotic, dramatic, and cinematic experience I ever had in a game. Sadly we ended up getting surrounded. Our halftracks got destroyed by anti-tank guys and ended up getting picked off one by one as they hunted us through-out the town.
The communication and acting was hilarious.

You always talk about the punishing difficulty curve of learning DCS, and yet you've never tried any of the helicopters AFAIK. I'd pay good money to watch a stream of you trying to take off or land in the Mi-8 and get nostalgic for all of my hundreds of crashes :P
huey is the more fun one to fly around imo but mi8 is deffo more crash friendly :D
@@Daisudori The Huey simply oozes comfort. Mi-8 can also be pretty fun, but yes, you need to be very cautious with it.

@@cericat Nah its usually when I try some fast LZ landings, I can plop the Huey down like in the movies but in Mi-8 i need more practice, easy to vrs the thing. I can fly it good normally but when u start pushing the Mi8 she can turn vile on you fast. :P
@@Daisudorithat may be your problem honestly, don't treat it like a Huey, the Hip is a twin turbine vs a single turboshaft like the Huey so the performance is rather different in said fast landing and take off situations. It's one of the dangers in games like this, people are so used to a specific type of craft they treat them all the same and wind up being punished for it.
Insurgency Sandstorm is honestly one of my absolute favorites, it's got cool graphics, horrifyingly immersive combat, and is overall really well polished even as is.
That game is dead. No one plays it on steam or stream it on twitch.

Hey Drewski, at about 7:00 you were talking about making the DCS more accessible and such. I just wanted to mention that now on the standalone version they have a system that you can try any module you want for 14 days before a 6 month wait where you can do it all again.
the story with the russian friends is very wholesome. different people overcoming language barriers in game is always so nice to see and experience

i played dcs on key board and mouse i was able to take off fly left and then kamikaze a tree. overall 8/10 experience would try again

Completely agree that DCS has a bit of a paywall issue which hinders accessibility, but then on the flipside as you said, the stuff you pay for is very VERY high quality. Probably best to hold off until a summer sale!
My top recommendation to new players is to wait for a sale and then buy FC3. Not too expensive, you get a variety of planes with a variety of roles, and you can fly without all the knob-twiddling (but the flying and combat are still the full real-deal). I started a long time ago with Lock-On (Flaming Cliffs 1) and as a high-schooler with only Ace Combat experience, it wasn't too hard to learn.
wait for their 1/2 off sales or enjoy the SU25T for free, if you buy the basic game you get a boat load of planes to learn how to master.

Hey Drewski, you should take a look into Solder Secret Wars, it's having a reconstruction from generally the ground up by this new internal dev.
It's a old game from 2004 with pretty cool destruction 'physics' and pretty extensive character customization. It's got over a 100 guns and over 100 vehicles. Currently they're doing remodeling and overhauls to the world/visuals, which have been pretty good if you follow their site or discord. It's a free community edition of the game too, similar somewhat to that of Halo Community Edition.

Currently the game is still in it's old state but they're working a complete overhaul, even to gameplay which I'm interested to see what that entails. This overhaul has been going on for about 2 years now but still has weekly updates on their site/discord. They're decently active too for what I have seen.

I've gotta say, I enjoyed Sandstorm when it was in closed alpha and beta more than I do now. The gameplay is so different now, and it feels way more campy than it used to be.
The game's still good, but I miss playing skirmish with the boys on the OG maps

I picked up DCS about 3-4 years ago out of the blue. I had nooooo idea what I was doing. Stuck with it, started out in the F-5E and moved to the Hornet and Viper. I'm so obsessed with it now. It's all I ever want to play. Do yourself a favor people: spend some cash to get a good HOTAS and setup, and get into DCS. It's insane.

The chatting with enemies feature in Insurgency Sandstorm reminds me of an old game called Day of Infamy.
I remember saying to an ally "Careful, there's a machine gunner on the other side of this wall"
To which the enemy on the other side of the wall replied; "No there's not!"
So glad that you mentioned Foxhole. It didn't catch my interest at first but I looked into it and it looked very interesting. I got it just 3 days ago at the summer sale and it's one of the best games I have played, completely different from anything else, I hope it grows more in popularity.
foxhole is a fantastic game. Definitely underrated - bought it on launch day. I do miss the feeling of hopping into a fresh war like when the game first came out though, but definitely like the bigger map too

Foxhole is one of those games where it seems weird on the surface but once you get into it you fall in love with it
DCS planes are on sale on steam right now, i picked up the F-15 (low fidelity) and is absolutly amazing, highly recomend it, went from the su25-t bombing AI trucks to shooting down migs in 20 minutes.
Still find the full fidelity aircraft too expensive

Foxhole is such a underrate game i remember spending a night barely holding a bridge and a snow storm coming in and saving our ass logging in a couple of days after and seeing we pushed all the way to the next sector from there and being so proud of what we did that day its really great and such a fun experience the community is genuinely amazing and nice and just great
As someone who lives and breaths foxhole now i really appreciate you giving it some love and i hope we get a ton of new players from this!

You have to play for atleast an hour and a half to really get in to it. Plus a microphone is almost needed if you dont want to get bullied haha.

Lol, there actually is an "arcade" setting in the DCS options. Makes everything a little simpler. Let you play around with stuff before you decide to seriously learn how to fly a real aircraft. And yeah, the prices are a little steep, but that's how we can have such a serious simulator. There are sales occasionally, up to about 50% off. So, if some aircraft you wanted was $80, it will be on sale for a few weeks for $40.

war thunder is also worth mentioning, tanks, planes, jets, helicopters, ships, multiplayer, joystick and limited vr support, "free"
only warning is that the grind is insane mid to late game so if you end up really liking it you might end up spending a bit of money to get through stuff quicker, otherwise very fun especially with friends
