      You can get a Tascam 38/48/TSR-8 and a vintage mixer for less and actually have half inch tape that goes 15 ips... for less than the 388. 388s are really cool, but too much for my budget. I have a Sony MXP-390 and Tascam TSR8 and that is a pretty cool setup. I do have other parts include preamps and usb interface, but even adding them in I'm in way less.

One of my fave productions of yours so far, good stuff man. The creativity and DGAF approach is always refreshing, especially during this rutt contemporary music has found itself in.

    I have beef with the beta 52a. For live it’s good to get that sub to really punch, but in a recording setting it’s too colored and static. It’s almost as tho placement or the kick you use doesn’t change anything about the sound.

    The 388 is $5000 now?!
    Shit, I paid $600 for a mint one 6 years ago, it was a great machine, but nothing a good console and a good eight-track linked together can't do.

    • @travisraab
      @travisraab  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In november, with the release of their and IK's 388 plugin, Tascam prematurely stated that 388s go for over $5k. They did not then. I am starting to see some listed for over 5k. They are selling for over 3k for sure. Who knows who high they will go. I'm not sure why they cost so much

    • @massesesclaves644
      @massesesclaves644 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@travisraab Oh I see. I had the original receipt from the store it had been bought in, in southern France in the mid-80's and it was 10,000 euros (roughly $10,000) street price (in today's dollars of course)
      So it wasn't cheap, but nothing was in those days, even in "semi-pro" world.
      I reckon they've gone up in price because it is a one off design, that is still seductive today, neither Otari or even Revox attempted the all integrated reel-to-reel idea, and it caught-on with project studios (I remember reading that Madonna did the pre-prod for a late 80's album on a 388, and a lot of 'roughs' from the machine made it into the final album).
      Still, prices are slowly matching that of the original price, (we have to remember that a Neumann U47 when new was 3500 dollars/4000 dollars (now it fetches 20 or 30 thousand dollars) and It has nothing to do with the intrinsic quality of the tool but rather the seductive appeal, increasing scarcity, etc... Offer and demand.
      You can get a great Otari 8-track deck (that is superior in many ways), and a very good broadcast console filled with transformers for the equivalent or even less than $5000 today, but hey, that's just me.
