  • In todays video, I am currently in Georgetown Penang, where we are going to be spending a full day exploring the area and surrounds. Now these places will include Penang Hill, where well enjoy the steep ride up and down on the famous Penang Hill Railway, to walking through an incredible Chinese clan house (Leong San Tong), marveling over the history at Peranakan Mansion Museum, to entering the Fort Cornwallis grounds. Now aside from Penang Hill, for the most part today, well be walking from place to place with streets lined with buildings from colonial, Chinese, Indian and Islamic influence,
which really make this place unique. Lets head out and explore the incredible Georgetown, Penang (Malaysia).

Penang.... Memories. I spent a lot of my childhood on that beautiful island. I would love to go back there some day because much has changed. Yep, Fujian is where my ancestors are from. And thru inter-marriage, my family is also Peranakan. That explains my penchant for curries and spice and all things nice. 😅

Very lucky to spend time during childhood on that island! What a great place. Although I haven’t explored much of Malaysia, thus far Penang is my favourite. You would have an interesting family tree that’s for sure! I loved learning about the history of the place.. personally I find that very enjoyable.

Laksa & mee hoon noodles should be made out of rice flour so should be gluten free for you to try. A lot of Malaysian desserts/kuih are also made using rice/tapioca flour which should be gluten free too. Have them a try so you don't miss out on Malaysian food while travelling in the country.

I appreciate the information… generally I wouldn’t ask as although the ingredients may be fine.. unfortunately it’s also the risk of cross contamination…. In Asian countries generally locals don’t have Coeliacs, hence places are not fully aware of what it means… for example… it can’t be cooked or made using the same cooking utensils previously used on something that has wheat, gluten or rhe… hence why I don’t usually bother… but I really appreciate the comment. All the best 👍

Nicely done Luke, first time visiting Penang for me last month. I really rated GeorgeTown plenty of great colonial buildings and food scene looked amazing although i was shocked at how decimated Batu Ferringhi beach looked like. Looks like covid hit the tourism industry here hard so many resorts and restaurants looked closed! Penang Hill whilst a good view up the top was a bit of a pain getting there and there was a really long wait to get on the funicular up although it was a weekend when i wen’t so that probably half explains why!

I’ve never heard of that beach to be honest with you… somehow I can’t imagine Penang having really nice beaches? Although I could be wrong. Id like to hire a motorbike and ride around the island and also possibly inland where possible next time. I liked the small town vibe… friendly locals and not crazy busy for the most part. Cheers for the comment mate 👍
