  • In this video I take a look at the newly released Sigma contemporary 56mm f/1.4 lens for the Canon EF-M mount. I also talk about how the other lenses in the trio (the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 and Sigma 30mm f/1.4) fit into the EF-M mount system.

    I know I'm super late in the M game. Finally got my M6 Mkii 4 months ago and I'm loving every single aspect of it (except for the screen, I normally shoot with a R6 so the articulated screen is perfect).
    The second lens I got for it was the Sigma 56 and I still can't believe how sharp, accurate and fast lens it is. My camera was second hand and came with no lens. I got the 22 first (another great lens). Since I got the Sigma I got a couple of other lenses and the EF adapter (although I no longer own any EF lens)
    I shoot probably 80% of the times with the 56, the rest is divided between all the other lenses.
    The only one I need right now is a wide angle, a good one. The Sigma 16 is under my consideration, but it is too large and heavy. It goes against the small and light factor of the camera. So I'm looking for other options. Which lens would you recommmend? My current lineup is: Canon 22 f2, Sigma 56 1.4, 18-55 (kit lens) and the 7 Artisans 35 1.2.

    One reason to consider the Sigma 30mm over the Canon 32mm is that the Sigma is internal focussing, versus unit focussing for the Canon.

    Got mine this Monday and my dog was kind enough to model for me as well. It won't be getting as much use as my 32mm, but should be great for portraits. Still, nothing beats the 32mm and the look it provides.

    From the lenses I've used, I think Tamron has the most character, then older Canon EF glass, EF-M glass, and (surprise) plastic Canon EF-S. The nicer the Canon glass, the more coatings they add and those coatings seem to give the lens a colder look with a lot of contrast. The old 80-200mm and 35-80mm lenses are plastic and have good warmth, low contrast. The 35-70 glass EF lens is heavy and has a nice look. But I've noticed that Canon isn't using the same coatings on the EF-M lenses as they are on the EF lenses.

    I use the latest EF-S 50mm F1.8mm on my EOS M1 - absolutely superb image quality and only £99 new. I think this coupled with the 22mm f2 and the 11-22mm make the perfect travel camera. At night I also use the sigma EF-S 17-50mm f2.8. It’s a beast of a lens but only circa £130 used .

    Great video. I don’t think anyone else has really reviewed this lens for ef-m yet. I have the 22, 28, 32, 11-22 and kit already for the m50..trying to decide if I want this one next or the 18-150..maybe this one as low light indoors capability is more important on these dark, cold winter days! Have the 50mm f1.4 EF with adapter but it’s not very sharp wide open.

    • @denyxrunner
      @denyxrunner 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      drone head I have this lens for my a6400. It’s perfect for portraits and extremely sharp wide open. For indoor is a little to tight for full body shot. I have also the canon 50mm f1.8 stm and this sigma is sharp at f1.4 like the canon at f4

    • @ER-jk6lv
      @ER-jk6lv 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Light Yagami - thanks for info. I like this focal length for grabbing candid shots of my kids around the house! Using flash spoils the moment. Sharp at f1.4 gives me a chance of getting a reasonable ISO and nicely blurred background. M50 gets pretty noisy around ISO 3200. I'm sure Sony is better! Only thing with this lens is no IS so have to hold it steady! Think I'll try to buy it though. Thanks again.

  • @SpinachBob
    @SpinachBob 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You said there is no equivalent lens for the canon ef-m mount, but if you don't mind (or prefer!) manual then the Samyang (Rokinon) 50mm f1.2 has been around for ages (couple of years?) for ef-m. I use it on my M3. 80mm equivalent. Sharp enough, very nice lens if you don't mind manual. I've loved using it, and so I imagine the Sigma 56mm f1.4 would be a similar experience. It would be interesting to see how the sharpness and IQ of those two lenses compare. I agree that 30-35mm (~50mm equivalent) is more useful indoors for family/kids etc. But you can sit across a room (or in a garden) with an aps-c 50mm and get nice candid shots with subject isolated by f1.4.

    Looking to get the M6 Mark ii... it's in my budget range I like the touch screen and size...and it now has 24fps. I currently use my iPhone and osmo pocket for my videos and want to up my video game. Judging by your video... I think I may as well go with the kit lens option... especially with the additional stabilization. There are two lens kit options on B&H... the 18-150mm and the 15- 45mm lens... which one is better as an "all in one"... I will be shooting food and me... my bbq Pitts and anything else in the back yard... I know nothing about cameras except what I have watched on a lot of videos... and they just make things more confusing. Thanks.

    • @Linteria
      @Linteria 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m sure you bought some camera by now, but if you’re still considering the m6ii, try to get the 18-150mm kit. You will appreciate the longer zoom on it. 18mm is close enough to 15mm so you’ll have a wide enough shot to start with and still be able to zoom in pretty far. After that you can start working on building your prime lens collection, starting with the 22mm ($200, best value on EF-m), then either the 11-22mm (ultra wide) or 32mm (standard, best lens on the system), depending on what kinda shots you want. Both of those are upwards of $400. Coming from a happy M6ii owner with all the Canon lenses except for the 18-150 and 18-55 kit lenses. Hope this helps.

I also have the EF50mm F1.8 STM with Canon adapter, which I thought i would use a lot but didn't really. When the Sigma 56mm came out i so wanted to buy one, but once i calm down and watch this review, i feel i might just be falling for the excitement of getting new gear. Which lens do you think is better the 56mm or the 16mm? I’m a beginner and I’m planning on buying a M50 as my first camera . I’m doing my research and most of the cons I’m hearing on that it’s not a full frame camera and it’s poor low light picture quality. I’m a traveler and just want one lens that I could pretty much use for all or most situations of taking pictures of myself while I travel . Which lens would you recommend for the M50 ? and my lens budget is 300$ to 600$ .

    • @Linteria
      @Linteria 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You prob already bought this but i’d recommend the 16mm since it seems you want to take selfie style pics or even vlogs. The M50 is great in low light as long as you have a fast lens (low aperture). Anything 2.0 or below, like these 1.4 lenses, and you’re good.

  • @Bill-NM
    @Bill-NM 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    A useful comparison would be between something like the Canon 50/1.4 and the Sigma...the Canon is small-ish and only $299 right now...but even the regular price of $399 is cheaper than the Sigma.

    • @Linteria
      @Linteria 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The EF USM version? He most likely doesn’t own that lens and it’s even bulkier than the Sigma, especially considering the necessary adapter for the 27 year-old lens. I’d take a 3rd party lens of the same focal length and max aperture but with a native mount any day, unless you already have the old Canon lying around. The 1.4 USM has a loud focus motor compared to this newer lens. For stills it should be solid, but again, only if there’s already one in your collection would i recommend it over the Sigma. Viltrox also recently released a 56mm with AF this year worth checking out.

    • @Bill-NM
      @Bill-NM 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tammy Sypniewski Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 can give you the same focal length down to f/1.2 with the speed booster. My only issues with speed boosters and full frame lenses are the weight and the bulk in front of a small camera

    • @kaverjordankharbteng2550

      Snowwalker disadvantages with speedboosters. Bigger Size, Heavier Weight, Slower Autofocusing, Focusing Noise, Lens Image Stabilisation might not work, Lesser Image Quality compared to when the lens is used on an actual full frame camera.

      Kaver Jordan Kharbteng yes I’ve experienced all of that. The only occasion a speed booster could be useful is in landscape photography or in low light situations.

      Ben Bjurstrom I would definitely be interested in that video. I have already bought the m6 mark II, the 11-22mm and the 22mm. The macro capabilities of the 28mm in combination with focus bracketing feature of the m6 mark II makes it an interesting combination, I have a friend who wants me to help shoot some product shots and for some of those a macro lens would probably be useful (really small products). Right now I am really tempted to get the 32mm f1.4, I hope I can eventually find one at a decent price. I really like your videos by the way, keep up the good work! 😀

    • @mattdebyl8806
      @mattdebyl8806 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Art Wow a lot of blah blah blah and bluster here from self proclaimed expert. You can say what you want, but internal fast focussing is a worthwhile attribute. Why do you think all the Fuji fanboys are constantly begging Fuji to do MkIIs of the 18mm, 35mm f/1.4, 56mm etc? I have no reason to believe the Fuji (which I've owned) to be optically any better than the Sigma, apart from a marginal difference in speed. Not sure your point on people using f/2.8 lenses? Are you a noob? It's ok to be a noob, just stop trying so hard. You also realise that metal dents and plastic bounces right? Keep fanboying, fanboy.

      I don't hate it. I just don't see much of a future for EF-M. Also, given the fact that the Canon choose to put the RF mount on the C70 should indicate that Canon plans on making the RF system both 135/VistaVision and APS-C/S35. If that is their plan, it doesn't sense for Canon to have two incompatible lens mounts to cover the same format.
      What's more, since the first EF-M camera, Canon has only released 8 lenses from 2012-2018 and nothing since. Also in 2018, Canon released the RF system and have 17 lenses since then.

    • @Linteria
      @Linteria 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Crlarl were you expecting an EF-M mount on the C70? The RF is the replacement for their classic EF mount, so of course their focus is on that. But you’re ignoring the sales numbers of their EF-M cameras, particularly the M50, and many of the EF-M bodies continue to sell really well. I agree that Canon has slacked big-time with first party lenses, but the lenses they have released so far are really good. Third party ones have also been nourishing the mount for years. There are many brands releasing good quality, affordable manual lenses like 7artisans, Neewer and Kamlan, and some great, highly-acclaimed AF lens trios have come out from companies like Sigma last year and Viltrox in the past 2 months. First party options have been lacking, this is true, but the mount is far from dead.
