REVIEW of the SIGMA 16mm f/1.4 EF-M on the CANON M50 / Worth buying?

  • There's a new wide-angle lens in town for EF-M mount cameras - the Sigma 16mm F/1.4 DC DN. This lens is also available for Sony E-Mount and Micro 4/3 cameras, but I'll be reviewing the lens with the APS-C Canon M50. I'll also compare and contrast the Sigma against the lens I've been using on my M50 - Canon's 11-22 f/4-5.6. The Canon lens can also shoot at 16mm, so is there any point in owning the Sigma? Does it improve video quality on the M50? Check out my review to find out.

    This Sigma is the lens that I constantly default to when taking pictures indoors because of the low f-stop. I also like the build quality of the lens. I like some bulk in my hand when holding my camera compared to the stock prime lens. Great quality lenses by Sigma!

    I just ordered this lens to help with noise in my limited lighting setup, as I don’t have the space to add more lights. I’m insanely impressed it was able to drop all the way to 200 ISO. I was expecting maybe 2000. The lens arrives in two days, so I’m even more excited now!
    And I’m not sure if maybe the Canon lens was a bit out of focus in that test, or if it’s just because the Sigma lens is that good, but the Sigma clips were a lot clearer, too. Your hair, facial hair, and different areas of your shirt were basically like going from 1080p to 4k in that comparison.
    Edit: The lens is a RIDICULOUS improvement in my somewhat low-light setup. I use a Canon M200 and I was able to go from f/4.5 1/60 6400 ISO with the kit lens to f/1.4 1/125 800 ISO with the Sigma. The highlights are much more balanced on my skin, the noise was greatly reduced from the drastic reduction in ISO, and the overall clarity difference is like going from a C to an A. INSANE value for $400.

    Finally someone did an ACTUAL REVIEW of this awesome lens! i've been thinking of getting this someday when it was announced. That 1.4 is so crisp! i was gonna ask if the Tiffen 77mm ND filter will make a vignette, but saw that you had the same ND filter as i did. awesome! i'm gonna use that mainly for video someday with my M50 + Ronin SC! Can you make more videos using this lens outside 😁👍 like a real world test or maybe a cinematic video using it. I'm subscribed so i'll be able to watch you use this lens.

    • @dominey
      @dominey  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jasper Tordilla Vlogs Thanks! Glad you liked the review. I think the Sigma looks really crisp as well. I’ve used the 11-22mm w/ the M50 on a Ronin SC and it works beautifully. At only half a pound heavier, I would imagine the Ronin should perform just as well.

  • @MinimalWave1982
    @MinimalWave1982 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The Sigma is good for the blurry background effect and good for low light situations, but in good light situations i dont think the canon is inferior in image quality. The Canon is a better vlog lens due to its wider angle and image stabilisation.

    • @dominey
      @dominey  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      MinimalWave1982 Agreed. In case you missed it there’s a spot in the review where I compare the lenses outside in soft overcast light with an ND filter, and they appear very similar at around f/5.6. To your point about vlogging, I hear ya. Handheld, I like to shoot lower than 16mm if I can. Thanks for the feedback!

    • @pizzablender
      @pizzablender 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dominey It seems the Sigma is a lot sharper though. I found the 11-22 very disappointing with regards to detail in your shots.

    • @dominey
      @dominey  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pizzablender Overall, the image from the Sigma is definitely better than the 11-22. In favorable light, the difference isn't that great, but overall though the Sigma outperforms the 11-22. I just wish I could get a prime EF-M 12mm Sigma now!

      I have the 22 and unless you only care about weight and can afford the extra 200 bucks, this lens blows it out of the water. Also the 22 AF was noisy for video and this lens is silent and so quick to focus. It is definitely worth the extra money IMHO.

    • @erickvelasco2635
      @erickvelasco2635 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Steve Spam interesting. I have the the sigma 30mm 1.4 for my canon 70D. But the lens was unusable due to its loud autofocus in video. So I just use a canon 24mm 2.8. I actually just upgraded to the canon M6 mark II and I was debating whether I should go with the canon 22mm or this new sigma 16mm. Your saying the sigma isn’t loud with its autofocus?

    • @SteveSmith-fh6br
      @SteveSmith-fh6br 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@erickvelasco2635 It is completely silent and the AF is faster than the Canon lens. Keep in mind the noise (which wasn't completely terrible, but still there) on the 22mm was the reason I returned it. I couldn't be happier with the Sigma and for me it is a no-brainer if it's between it and the 22.

    I use it on my Canon M50 and I also have the Canon10-22mm & 17-55mm f2.8 (the later of which stays on the camera by default) so those two other lenses overlap (more or less) with the focal range of the Sigma but, the Sigma blows the other two away for beautiful images!

    My only 'issue' with the sigma 16mm is its weight. Besides that, I simply love it.

    This is a really top quality review! First video of yours I've seen and expected you to have a lot more subscribers.
    One question: do you find the autofocus noisy on the Sigma? I recently bought a Canon 17-55m f2.8 for my 200D but the autofocus is really noisy so thinking of switching to the M50 and this Sigma lens.

    • @dominey
      @dominey  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. :) Regarding noise, if you're using a mic mounted on the cold shoe and record video in a quiet room, you may hear the auto focus "jitter" back and forth. Not noticeable IMO when recording outdoors or in a room with some ambient sound. If I were recording in a quiet space, I'd record audio to a separate recorder or use a wireless transmitter (like the Rode Wireless Go) instead of a mic mounted on the camera. Hope that helps.

    Wow this was a great review! I knew someone was going to do a professional review sooner than later! I have this one now but planning on getting the 30mm next. I may skip on the 56mm variant.

      How is the autofocus for video? I’ve had problems with previous sigma lenses where the autofocus is too loud. I’m wondering if I would have the same problem with this new sigma lens

    • @mirrorlessmemory
      @mirrorlessmemory 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Erick Velasco it’s really quite, however if it’s completely silent, you can hear it. I’ve recorded some short films with it where it’s a silent scene and you could def hear, but it’s very subtle. I’ve heard older sigma lens that are obnoxiously loud, this doesn’t do that. Any sort of dialogue or noise though will drown out the motor noise on this lens. Also, the auto focus setting if your not filming yourself or people is single point. I have a hard time with the large focus area one, hunts for focus a bit too much.

    This video was very helpful and sold me on this lens. I recently got the M50 and am looking for good lenses for talking head videos. My room is pretty dark so this will really be helpful for me. Thanks for the video!

    Best review about the efm sigma 16 1.4!! Thank you!!
    Do you think there is any difference between the Canon 32 1.4 and the new Sigma EFM 30 1.4?

    • @Jakubcu
      @Jakubcu 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That question came to my mind too but I already have the 32 mm from Canon and I guess the difference between them will be quite neglible since both offer same aperture and the 32 mm from Canon is the best original EF-M lens, in terms of image quality. I would say that this 16 mm Sigma brings that high IQ to this focal length range and I´m looking forward to use it instead of the 15-45 Canon kit lens which is not that impressive, in terms of IQ and, of course, maximum aperture.

    Excellent review. I am interested in upgrading and I want to be able to film anywhere in nearly any lighting conditions. Years ago I borrowed a Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 for a trip across Asia and I loved how clear and how much contract the lens had wide open.
    Video Idea Suggestion: "Can you Vlog by Moonlight?", and compare the 16mm F1.4 to a Sigma 24mm F1.4 speed boosted to F1.0.

    Great review. I'm hoping to move from APSC-DSLR to Mirrorless in the next years and lenses like these make the APSC mirrorles system more mature and interesting. And they also make the corporations to invest more in crop mirrorless bodies, so I hope that in the future, those of us, who dont want or can spend in FF, will have great options.
    Now you can upgrade to the m6 kii or wait to see if there will be a m5 mkii or an m60.
    Again, great work. I wish the best for your channel.

    great vid. i have the sigma 16mm and love it. i shoot a lot of tool reviews and up close shots, is this the best lens or is there a better one .

    • @dominey
      @dominey  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Guess you could try the 16mm and see if it works, but I suspect it may be too wide angle for close-up shots. Have you considered the 28mm Macro lens? It has a shorter minimum focusing distance so you can get closer to a subject and the field of view is more standard (and not on the wide angle side). Here's the lens: geni.us/MrwT
