Your attention has to be directed in, and that's difficult when you only see the world. So if the Guru comes in the world your attention can go more easily towards Him. You need a form, inside is formless. It is by His grace you can direct yourself to Him.
Guru within and Guru outside is the same. The one has a form and the other doesn't. Both are the Self. Both are YOU. "One" pushes you inward and the "other" pulls you inward. They are one and the other as long as you believe you are this person, this Jeeva. They are trying to get you to drop the belief in the mind. The stories, the tendencies, the desires, the incarnations, time, space and objects. When these are dropped you see all of it was within you, and though it "happened", its not the Truth. Like a dream is all in the dreamer and though it happened its not the truth... and nothing ever happened.
