  • Advocate, Larry Rosen discusses best practices for in-home assessments. A function of the in-home assessment is so the social worker can observe your child's behavior in your home. It's really important that you be able to corroborate your child's needs for IHSS to the social workers. Some do's and don'ts for your child's in-home assessment. After Larry's presentation he answers a few viewer questions that where asked during the live stream.

    Absolutely right. I went on for years with very minimal hours until one day my son threw one of his raging fits. That day he was self abusive and lashing out at me and grabbing my clothes and screaming and hitting. After that we finally got substantial hours. It was several more years before another parent told me about protective supervision. The social workers never ever told me. My son was a teenager by the time we finally got the maximum number of hours. My son is non verbal and incontinent. He can’t read, write , speak nor get his own food . So yes that’s good advice.

    I have listened to this again. This is very good Larry. If my son called 911 (he's legally blind, with prior brain surgeries) I am prepared to ask them how he could get out of the house safely and know how to get out of the house safely if there were an obstruction, etc. I recently had a HVAC person in the house and I saw my son "run away" when he saw him. This could also apply to a firefighter, 1st responder etc. we definetly need to keep thinking "out of the box" thx Larry!

    Amazing I can’t wait for next July. They’re gonna see it all. We do make it way too easy when our case worker has been here. I love the asking our child questions tip. Since she’s non-verbal. We’ve worked for two years for her to work the phone and dial my wife’s number. But my daughter would have no idea how to dial 911. Such good info. Thank you.

    My grandson doesn’t communicate well, he’s deaf. So when asked questions he doesn’t understand anything. Has behavioral issues. So when social worker asks a question, he does not reply. But still two years ago was denied. I appealed and got the protective care back. She didn’t think he needed it.

      You can add his IEP to this documentation. You can have the aide for your son attend the meeting.

    Another topic you may wish to bring up is that IHSS is only available in certain states and is not a 50 state program. With a lot of people moving around in 2021, some people may not be familiar with this, so they need to look into this before moving! It doesn't just "transfer from state to state" :)

    • @ihssadvocates
      @ihssadvocates  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This is a common topic asked in our IHSS Facebook group. The reality is, there is no other state that has an IHSS program that equally compares to California's.

    I'm thankful to have ran into your information here and you're very kind to help us. I am curious what exactly protective supervision is for because I was told it is not for self injurious behaviors, now hearing this I know otherwise but would like to know more prior to applying for my 19 year old that's needed it for years and obviously hasn't received help since being misinformed, he has IHSS hours but not protective supervision hours Thank you

    • @ihssadvocates
      @ihssadvocates  ปีที่แล้ว

      Protective Supervision is an IHSS service for people who need to be observed 24 hours a day to protect them from injury. The person eligible for Protective Supervision must have a “mental illness” or “mental impairment” that impairs their judgement, memory and orientation. For example, a parent (Provider) has an autistic child that is constantly engaging in dangerous activities or unknowingly harms them self. The parent may be able to receive payment for the hours they spend watching over their child. Parent providers can get 195 or 283 hours per month when their child is granted Protective Supervision. I have my first annual year in home visit because the first one was waived due to the pandemic for my non verbal autistic 4 year old son she granted me overprotective supervision (24hr) so Im super nervous she will take it away but nothing has changed (for the better) in my sons diagnoses even his recent evaluation from our regional center indicates “needs 24 supervision can not be left alone” as well on his school IEP I just get super nervous because for the first time this has helped our family

    My child is 5 and was born with spina bifida. He is in a wheelchair and is in diapers. He is going to start catheters and peristine system for bowel movements. He also has a shunt in his brain and has frequent appointments. He is also behind when it comes to his speech and we do get SSDI for him. I had never heard of IHSS until his last visit to the Spina Bífida clinic at Valley Children’s Hospital this past week. I applied today but I have no idea if any of this qualifies us.

    There are so many issues involved with this it's making my head spin. We are nearing retirement and if anyone in the family has "access" to company "full time" employment, 30 hours or more? even with lower income such as SSI and IHSS, one may still not be able to qualify for "subsidies" in the "marketplace" simply because they are full time employed and thus don't need marketplace subsidy access. I am so confused. Thank you!

    Guess what when the social worker from IHSS came home that day I gave to my non verbal teen who just learn to write or recognize his family members his ipad, cell phone and coloring supplies so we would not behave badly :( Becasue I did not want people see my son act inappropriate, thanks to my ego. She said he is great very smart can do everything. I didnt want to say negative things about my baby, although nobody care about me while I was changing his diaper until he was 12 years old or still dealing with his grooming( nail, hair etc). I always thought he is my baby I have to

    A social worker for the county we are applying for our son at 1 of 3 workers told me to take the safety wheels off, let the worker if it’s her or someone else see what it’s like without us blocking him or stopping it. Because we recognize all his tics and stop them.

    I don’t know if you’ll see this question but if you do please let me know what you think. I have an adult severely autistic son who has gotten out of windows and climbed over fences despite a wall around property and cameras etc . He has been found by neighbors and police once and brought home. It’s been 4 years since he escaped but he still try’s to get out but we have alarms and motion sensors etc. we had a reassessment last week and now in the mail we have form for his
    psychiatrist to fill out for protective supervision assessment application. do you think this is just routine or did the ihss worker feel my sin was no longer a threat to himself etc? strangely enough its been 8 years since he was first approved for PS and this last week I told the ihss worker I was applying for his autistic brother to get ihss. I wonder if she is throwing a curve at me? please let me know. also strangely the day of his assessment we were talking outside and he tried to get out right in front of her! and I tokd her we have had simukar problems recently.

    I have a question, related to disabled adults and IHSS, not sure if you work with adults. I hired my boyfriend 7 years ago as my IHSS worker. I've received IHSS for 10 years since becoming mobility impaired and serious health issues. We moved in together for finacial reasons. In the last two counties we lived in, he receives IHSS pay for domestic, transportation and paramedical services. We're moving counties again and are worried about his losing hours. I've just read that because he is my live in boyfriend (but not a spouse) the spousal rule applies and he should not be paid for these services. How then, with them assessing me in my apt with him living here, how has he been able to receive compensation for domestic services (which I cannot perform). Thanks.

    I'm receiving SSDI disability for my 2 sons that have autism in the state of Texas and is considering moving to California to get assistance with them because I'm not able to work and the SSDI is not enough to cover bills. I have no family to help me with them. My youngest is severely autistic and non verbal. If I am already receiving disability, do my kids still have to do an assessment in California for IHSS as they are already diagnosed as autistic by Social Security Administration?

    • @ihssadvocates
      @ihssadvocates  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      IHSS is Medi-Cal program in California and is a completely separate program from other states. Yes, you would be required to have an assessment to determine the need.

    My son is going to be 5 and what I feel is high on the spectrum as in behind in learning/comprehending and completely non-verbal. Does this help with getting protective supervision? He elopes and hits his head on whatever is close including whoever isn’t understanding him to the point of complete frustration.

      In California, there is the first assessment to determine the need for IHSS. After you are approved there is a yearly assessment or when ever there is a change in condition.

      He is using the word, "juggling" in place of whatever behaviors your child may be doing. For example, if your child throws tantrums, runs away or tears off his clothing, if possible, it is better if the IHSS representative can observe your child doing those behaviors, rather than just hearing the parent telling them that the child does those things. He doesn't actually mean juggling.
