Great video Randy. You know what is crazy? I have my Energy Orchard record on my turntable right now. I was spinning it yesterday morning before work. I love Bap Kennedy! Thanks for mentioning Hiss Golden Messenger. I am pulling out my box set now to spin Poor Moon. Great to see you! Cheers☘️
I wish that I had something from Energy Orchard. I don't know much about Bap Kennedy's time in that band. He is one of the several artists that I discovered by opening up for an artist I was going to see in concert. I only have two Hiss Golden Messenger albums but Poor Moon is my favorite so far. Thanks for watching.
Great overview, Randy. This was a good mix of some artists I know, with some that are new to me, like The Cactus Flowers and Steve Dawson. Hiss Golden Messenger interests me. I, too, have started to explore and buy more current releases and circling back on 2024 records that passed me by. Looking forward to your next series entry! 😎🎶
I recommend Poor Moon as a good starting point for Hiss Golden Messenger. If you like The Everly Brothers, you should like The Cactus Blossoms. Thanks for watching.
Funny, I have heard about the Cactus Blossoms, but I have never heard any of their music. Another band that I really should look into is the Drive By Tuckers and Jason Isbell, of course. I have also never listened to John Prine and, well, every artist you mentioned in this tag! Obviously, I will not attempt this tag 🙂
I know this tag isn’t exactly in your wheelhouse but The Cactus Blossoms are great if you like The Everly Brothers. Think of John Prine as the American Leonard Cohen with more humor. Actually that might apply to Jason Isbell more with not as much humor.
Thanks Randy ..an entertaining video Favorite song with banjo..The Osborne Brothers /"Ruby"(Are you mad at your Man)..Sonny Osborne, one of the best banjo players ever
Thanks for watching. I have one Osborne Brothers album but that song is not on it. I will have to go and give it a listen. I always like seeing your selections.
Great response. So many artists/albums I love here. Guy Clark, Townes, Billy Joe Shaver... Doc Watson is a great choice for acoustic guitar player. Nice to see some love for Bap Kennedy, love the song "Vampire" on that album.
One of my biggest regrets was not going to see Doc Watson when I had a chance. I have discovered quite a few artists as opening acts and seeing Bap Kennedy open for Steve Earle was just one of them. "Vampire" is such a great song. I've liked every album by him. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I love the list of artists that you compared The Cactus Blossoms music to, so I'll have to check them out. Love Iris DeMent, unique vocals and excellent lyrics. I got familiar with her through her collaborations with John Prince, and I think she has a very honest sound to her songs. Did you know she did the theme song for one of the seasons of The Leftovers? I love Prine's Common Sense, I am confused about that All Music rating because it's much better than they give it credit for. Great response to the tag and now my list of artists to check out is longer!
Thanks Mike. I have seen Iris DeMent several times and she has a voice that can fill up a room that is indeed unique. One of the times I saw her was with John Prine. I have not seen the show The Leftovers but I know that her song "Our Town" was used during the last scene of the TV Show Northern Exposure. Northern Exposure will appear when I get back to my series I started I'm sure. I do sometimes look at All Music ratings when I'm at a record shop and thinking about picking up a record, but the Prine rating shows that you can't always depend on them. Have a great weekend.
I'm mainly looking for old music myself. There's a lot of good new music out there, too much actually, but it's hard to find these days and as you get older you also do not relate to it as easily. Or so I find. Funny there is another Sugar Hill label, I think the rap one may still have been active in the late 80's, wonder how that name was able to be used. Don't think I have ever listened to Townes Van Zandt, yet another artist I'd never heard of before getting on here and seeing g so many people mention them. Cheers!
A lot of current pop music does not appeal to me but there are still artists making music in genres that I like, so I think I should be a little more diligent in seeking them out. I'm not sure how both labels coexisted as this label started in 1978 and is still operating. Townes Van Zandt was an amazing songwriter that led a very hard life but made some amazing music, especially his lyricism. Have a great weekend.
THANKS LOTS TO LISTEN LOTS I DONT KNOW
It would be interesting to see what you think on some of these. Thanks for watching.

Hey Randy! Thanks for the shout out! I keep meaning to do this, but I think I'll struggle finding some examples. Cheers!
Thanks Steve. There are several tags out there that I am thinking about. I know that this one isn't exactly in your sweet spot. Take care.

Hi Randall. Most of the artist you discussed I was not familiar with. I am always looking to listen new americana artist. Happy New Year. Norman
Thanks Norman. I hope that you found a few artists to check out. I'm always looking for new Americana artists as well.
