What amazes me about this is that it's not about guitar skills. It's about technology skills. It is really easy to play this song, but to get each sound to be perfect is almost impossible. The Edge is a Genious on this matter since he used technology in his music in an incredible way. And this guy is really skilled, for he has achieved something that edge created in an almost perfect way. Congrats.
Yago Crispim i dont think its about technology skills, the same technology is available for everyone. Its about creativity and musicallity. Edge is by far at the top of that list
Edge plays what others invented and made easy for him, its the result of alot of work by others to invent easy to play riffs live that sound great. Edge is the brick layer , not the architect
I would say it is more about getting you timing really, really on point than any "technology skills". Being able to play with a dotted eight-note delay (or dotted quarter-note delay) is non-trivial when every instinct is pulling you to go with the delay as the tempo, instead of playing 1/3 slower or faster. (Which is all it really is when you break down the math.) It is the first time in decades that I utilize a metronome. Try using one of those and playing just quarter notes with either of the delays before trying to jump right up to The Edge's "easy" playing. =)
Who thumbs down these videos. The guy goes out of his way to post these videos and that's the thanks he gets. The Edge himself could not do a better job of teaching. Thanks U2 GT. You are awesome. keep up the great work.
Thx for the support. It's ok, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I don't mind constructive feedback or thumbs down. If I get rude, insecure or unprofessional comments, I just delete them and block the channel. ;-)
+L Vinson I know, right? I reckon it's for either reason: 1) jealousy that someone can play the song better than they can or 2) U2 haters with nothing better in their life to do than to pick on someone's cover. I can't even begin to think of how much time Michael has spent into analyzing the sound (tone and effects) and then the work spent on replicating it, before even thinking of putting together the tutorials. Having done one complete analysis and replication of only one U2 song myself, I can only hazard a guess. My absolute respect to Michael for not only his work on these songs but his generosity in sharing them.
I take nothing away from everyone who finds it in his heart to use this forum to teach others what they know. But you Sir are the best I have come across and I absolutely love you for it. Thanks a lot .
With the help of this guy we are doing Where The Streets Have No Name with our band. And it's well received. Thanks so much man, it's so scaringly accurate. Love it.
@TheEdge2002 Arcade Fire from Canada. The song is called Wake Up. U2 used it for the intro to their Vertigo tour concerts and then Bono starts to say "Everyone.... Every... one.... "
I picked up a guitar for the first time during lock down and thanks to your tutorials, I can now play along with WoWY, Bad, IWF and AIWIY. Thank you so much for the dedication that you show :)
My friend, I'm playing this over and over and over...and thanks to your time, expertise and generosity, I'm learning to play this song that I love. I can't thank you enough for all that you do. I have looked at some of your other exceptional tutorials as well. You are awesome!! Thanks so much!! Love the pup...mine loves the guitar music as well. :)
superb playing, attention to detail is stunning, great to see a clear love and passion for guitar and this band combined. I love attempting your tutorials on acoustic! great for a finger work out!!
@DarkWriter31 This guitar is actually a Fender Strat that I had assembled from Custom Shop parts, and then I had a guitar tech install the Fernandes sustainer system with Hotrail pups just like the Fernandes guitar.
You make the handcrafting of U2 so much more attractive with your videos! Thank you so much... I'm listening more 'your' songs the original ones, because I enjoy that aspect of you their music :-) Goodluck... i hope, I can learn a few of the songs too with your help.. Take care!
You nailed that one. I think this is your best cover. Sounded perfect, you played it perfect. This is my favorite song of all time. Can't wait for the tutorial.
you've outdone yourself again Michael...that was absolutely fantastic. Thank you again for generously sharing what you've learned. I've got to get myself those pups and sustainer. I'm in NYC too, btw.
I've listened to that song a thousand times and u were spot on! I mean...just WOW!!! U inspired me to learn Streets and so i did (from your instruction) This song will be next if i can figure out how to get the garage band app on my mac to aound right for this song. Thank you so much for what you give to the world!!!
I love this.. through the storm we reach the shore, you give it all, but I want more..with you..we shine like stars in the summer night..we shine like stars in the winter night..one heart..one love..one..I love you Bono, I love U2
That was my next question about Edge using an Ebow, but I have never heard of a built in sustainer. Do you have any information on this type of sustainer?
Awesome dude! Played perfectly! It sounds like you didn’t even play it at all and just played the song over the background that’s how much it sounds exactly like the original. The Edge would be proud! God Bless Brother, one of my favourite songs also!
@DarkWriter31 Shimmer is essentially several delays set at different times to get a repeats tone that is constant. I use the multi-delay block which has a plex shift on four delays. You can set the pitch shift up one octave on one or two of the delays. You set four different delay times and you will get a decent shimmer, but not entirely smooth until you then add heavy reverb. The reverb smooths out the "artifacts." I also put a filter after the MTD block to cut off the harsh highs.
Hm. How would a mere mortal go about getting that sweet shimmer!?!? That's worth its own video. Going back to the original studio recording I seem to be hearing keyboards there, but with the Edge who knows?
@KWENIG1 Correct, Hot Rails in bridge and middle. Sustainer in neck. That's how Fernandes sets up their guitars (and Edge). I don't use quack much. It doesn't have the quack like a set of vintage pups.
have searched for years for the accurate tab or vids of this song and still havnt found and in these vids i have come to the end of that search...will return for the techno details later but fantastic vids....of fantastic and difficult to really replicate songs but your doin it as close as the great man (Mr Evans) himself....or is that you in these headless shots LOL great stuff....
@RobertRiffs: I bought the kit but didn't use the bridge pup it comes with. I bought a Hotrail bridge and middle pup and used those instead. But when driver is on, it only uses signal from the bridge no matter what the pup switch is set for. I recommend a pro install it. Lot of routing and shielding required. Not easy to do. Or just buy a Fernandes guitar.
Edge used to use an eBow. Now he uses a sustainer guitar. Check out Fernandes guitars. I have a Fernandes sustainer built into this Strat. The neck pup is a driver that vibrates the strings infinitely.
I love this so mch.. through the storm we reach the shore, you give it all, but I want more..with you..we shine like stars in the summer night..we shine like stars in the winter night..one heart..one love..one..I love you Bono, I love U2
It seems a long time since someone has written a message hear but first of all I want to thank Michael for all the effort, time and dedication that he put on making this series of video tutorial. I can say for sure that these are the most detailed U2 tutorials someone can find, and for that once again, thank you Michael. I hope you and your family are doing fine in the middle of this difficult times of pandemic. In this confinement and restrictions in travelling these videos have been a relief for me because it allows me to hear great covers from my favourite band and spend part of my time learning the songs. Finally I just have a question. Does anyone knows why the U2 guitar tutorials forum page isn’t working? There were a lot of interesting stuff for us U2 fans that want to lear their songs. Greetings from Mexico to you all
video auto focus uses an infrared beam. It's being reflected off of the strings and/or fret board which is causing it to focus on them and therefore you're off plane and out of focus. You can use manual focus, change your lighting, angle or move back. You have to experiment.
Great!!! Amazing cover, you got it perfectly right. Looking forward to the tutorials. I thing I'll have a hard with the beginning and switching from the sustainer part to the playing part at the 9-12 frets - as I am using an Ebow and if I see it right you switch the strings and also play 2 strings in parallel. Both can hardly be done with an Ebow. I hope you give a few hints in the first sections how this part could be done with the Ebow as I think a lot of people are using it. Keep it going!
esta increíble y escucharte cantar tienes una voz muy limpia y clara me encantó tocas muy padre llegaste mis expectativas con este tutorial amo esta canción
@neobx2: Yes, I know. But I had some extra parts to build a Strat and wanted a unique real Fender C-Shop with a sustainer. It was done by a pro in NYC. We went through the top because it required less routing. If we would have gone through the back, it would have taken out more wood which is not good for sustain. Worked out well. Looks very high tech. Love this guitar.
I bought a Fender Custom Shop body and neck that I liked and had it assembled with Seymour Duncan Hot Rails and a Fernandes Sustainer (same as a Fernandes guitar). I prefer Strat necks and bodies.
@txphi17: I don't have FRFR speakers but I do have a 1964 gray panel JMI AC-30TB similar to Edges. Go to Part 2 and I do the same cover with the Axe (with amp modeling off) and into the '64 AC-30. Almost everything I do is direct record using amp modeling. With the new Axe II coming, I'm sure I'll be relying on that full time going forward.
@U2GuitarTutorials: Yes I've noticed that in the way you are playing it. You're almost in the right position already when you play the last sustain note on the B-string. Wish I could play it the same, but I think with the ebow this is really tough. But thank you in advance that you'll provide a part with the ebow also, thats greatly appreciated!!!
@Zhorellski: Thx. Yes, there is no difference except for CPU capacity/memory. You can place more effect blocks in a preset with the Ultra. But most songs can be set up without needed the extra capacity. Sometimes I like to add more than necessary to experiment with combinations of amps or effects, and this requires more CPU power.
I got the infinite sustain using the Strymon Big Sky. Use the infinite switch on the one of the swell algorithms. You can control the spill over of the notes. Sounds better than an ebow.
How's my favorite guitar tutor? I see you have aquired a sustainer set up. I purchased the Fernades Vertigo. Edge played with or with out with vertigo on boston dvd. I love it. Your stuff is sounding perfect man. Keep up good work. William
@condor935 In short, my main processor is a Fractal Audio Axe-Fx (Ultra in this cover, but now I have the Axe II). The controls to the Fernandes sustainer are behind the bridge. Sustainer driver is in the neck pup position.
Most of the back tracks produced are 1/2 step down because they are based on live versions of the songs. I think this is based on R&H. U2 tunes down a 1/2 step on a lot of songs to make it easier on Bono's voice.

OK this is eye opener! I went to great lengths to try to suss out how Edge got the sustain on that intro. I always thought he used an 'E-bow'? Amazing performance!! And welcome ALL to modeling (Fractal Axe, Line 6 Helix and so forth...)!!

Hahahaa the puppy in the background :)
Ackdaddy100 And three pups on the guitar itself!
That was amazing, sounded like I was listening to Rattle and Hum when I closed my eyes. Spot on perfect, great cover!
Love it. Going to try bits of this tomorrow night (we play this in my band, but as part of a medley). It's my favourite part of the gig
sounds great. love the sustainer pick up. thanks for the vid.
Hi Michael. I have to say those settings of yours are absolutely brilliant. Very good work and THANK YOU again for your didactic labour!
@DarkWriter31
This guitar is actually a Fender Strat that I had assembled from Custom Shop parts, and then I had a guitar tech install the Fernandes sustainer system with Hotrail pups just like the Fernandes guitar.
U2 Guitar Tutorials I noticed in a video The Edge uses an Ed O’Brien issue Strat with the sustainer
WOW.....Fantastic Michael.
The Intro was just amazing.

You nailed that one. I think this is your best cover. Sounded perfect, you played it perfect. This is my favorite song of all time. Can't wait for the tutorial.

That was my next question about Edge using an Ebow, but I have never heard of a built in sustainer. Do you have any information on this type of sustainer?
Amazing sound you've got going on in this. You could easily fill in for the Edge. I'm a huge Edge and U2 fan. Great job!
VERY cool michael!!!
True Strats are awesome

Coming from a long time U2 fan, you did great, man.
So much Perfect !
Great job man!!!! Loved it
Excelente trabajo. Me sirve mucho. Gracias!
Flawless!
Amazing cover!!! I cant wait to see the tutorial for this, looks like im gona need to pik up an Ebow for the intro.
Neck pup is a sustainer. You can get kits and build them in or buy a Fernandez guitar which builds them in.
AHHHMAZEBALLS! Thank you so much!
very good my brother peru....

Love it.
William

what a good dog! I think he likes it!
Most of the back tracks produced are 1/2 step down because they are based on live versions of the songs. I think this is based on R&H. U2 tunes down a 1/2 step on a lot of songs to make it easier on Bono's voice.
Parabéns! Você toca e ensina muito bem! Muito obrigada!

@joshtree14: Yes I will upload it within the next day or two to the files section of the U2_Guitar_Tutorials group on Yahoo. You can join for free if you are not a member.
@TheSouthernAccent: Done. The Axe-Fx preset is in the files section of the U2_Guitar_Tutorials group on Yahoo.
OK this is eye opener! I went to great lengths to try to suss out how Edge got the sustain on that intro. I always thought he used an 'E-bow'? Ive also bought a Fernandez 'infinite sustain' Stratocaster - putting it through a Line 6 DL4 stompy......... But here you nailed it with WHAT?? Is this what the Axe-Fx ultra can do?? OMG. You SMASHED this out of the Rose Bowl dood. Theres a few attempts on YT at this into but nothing as close as this TOP MARKS!
Thank you! Edge did use an E-bow in the early days and later used a sustainer.
Just Music 🎶🎵✌
@hiladelphia:
"Hard" is a relative term. Edge's style is thoughtful and simple, but his use of effects is complex. It's difficult to understand the line between his notes, timing and the effects. It takes time to learn, but a beginner like me can do it in time. Be patient. In most cases I'm using the amp and cab models in the Axe-Fx which goes into my Apogee Duet interface and then Logic, or directly to my video camera for the covers. I'll start using my amp more soon.
I think you are right. I don't know / recall the history that far back. Today he uses a Fernandes sustainer guitar.
@TheAmalgamut: Yes, absolutely. I always do a full tutorial after each cover. I'll start recording the tutorials this weekend.
Absolutely Great, perfect....super
Could you upload the sysx file into the file section, i want to try your preset out.
regards
Harry
@boardboy1914: Boss FV500L but only using expression pedal output into Liquid Foot controller. I also haver a Mission but haven't got around to trying it yet. Built well however and I heard great things.
Even though i like the original key (D/Bm) better this is cool better. Im trying to learn the guitar part, cuz already I know the bass (D, A, Bm G). This is by far one of my Favorite songs of all time! Bravo!
