Being primarily a bass player, I watched (and then re-watched) this set of vids because I was merely curious about Edge's tone and delay settings on this classic song. But then I ended up grabbing my bass, turning the volume to max and playing along with you -- more than just a few times. Your tone is fantastic and your technique is spot-on. It was great jamming with you.
Thank you for the kind words, but I just work hard to imitate. Just muscle memory after listening to it a million times and playing it over and over. Unlike me, I'm sure your an accomplished guitarist after 25 years. I can't improvise but I can learn to play what I see and hear.
As far as inspirational guitarists go, I can name a half a dozen off the top but Edge is definately included in this group. The term "shimmer" was virtually unheard of until the advent of U2. All credit to him in producing that "orchestric sound" you refer to. His use of those trademark delays and open chords never required additional lead fills. Quite remarkable really. Great covers and your tutorials are the best on youtube. We all need to thank you for all your time and work.
brilliant as always. i have followed Michael for years and he has taught me the best of u2. however we have not heard from him for a while so i hope he is ok and is well
hi Michael my hubby would like me to thank you for your tuition on this song and others that you do. he is u2 mad. he has ocd obsessive compulsive disorder. it affects people in different ways. some clean a lot. some have number dilemmas. my husband has a condition where if he's learning something on guitar he has to learn it note by note and he says you are the best tutor on TH-cam. once he hears a note he can find it on his guitar. but seeing someone playing the song and describing time signature and strumming techniques helps him no end. so from the bottom of my heart and my hubby Andy thank you very much for your help and advice and time.
Dianne, this is one of the best comments I've ever received! Thank you so much. Some day when things settle down at work and with our new puppy, I'll produce more tutorials. Best to you and Andy.
Wow!!!!!, you really can't appreciate what going on in this song until you see it up close. Incredibly skilled guitarist! Makes me want to learn the guitar, although truth be told I can't ever see myself at that level 😞Absolutely amazing 🙂
Thank you for the kind words. What's even more amazing is that this is actually not hard to play relative to so many other songs. The Edge is brilliant incorporating delays and other effects into a wonderful, rich tone. It's not the notes, but the tones, arpeggios, melodies and hooks. Edge is a true artist. I just love being able to experience the joy of playing his songs. Anyone can learn these songs. I'm not an accomplished musician. I just practice these songs over and over until my wife can't take it anymore. ;-)
How could 46 people REALLY give this a "thumbs down"? You want to learn the song? This guy nails it! I have one of Edge's used blue picks and Edge even plays this song with the rough side like the guy in the video does. I will give it a thumbs UP!
Wow! An eye opener! I always struggled getting a clean tone on the g and b strings 11 and 12 fret. I noticed you bar 3 strings on the 10th fret. Works for me! Many thanks.
Thanks for doing the tutorials... Especially the Axe settings they have been more then useful. Most folk dont really understand how much Edge puts into getting these tones. And id love to see them even try and come close to been able to play a song like this the correct way
Fabulous yet again. Can't thank you enough for these incredible tutorials. Don't know what you do for a living, but if you're a teacher I wouldn't be surprised. Your teaching method (lots of repetition and basically broken down for we (the student) to totally self pace. Thank you again! Best wishes always.
No, for Streets, Pride, Bad, ISHFWILF, AIWIY and others, Edge uses the bridge and middle pups together, which is called "quack" position. It has a unique tone that is key to these songs.
Fantastic!!! Best tone and playing if ever heard on a cover. Seriously congrats. I've seen Edge play this from the second row on the Elevation tour and was perplexed (at the time) by his left hand trying to figure out the partial chords he was playing during the chorus. You nailed it! Edge droning the D, G, B then A "bass" notes makes it.
Always a pleasure to watch your videos, your are an amazing guitar player and also a great teacher. Thanks for taking the time to share your passion with us, you helped me a lot with your covers and it's really appreciated. Thanks again, you rock man!
Wonderful song, beautifully played and your tutorial is a pure joy to watch. After watching most of your videos, I think one understands why Bono calls The Edge "The scientist"! ;-) Keep these videos coming!
@oighroi: It's a 2003 Custom Shop Strat (1960 version). But I changed the pup guard to black and put in Kinman Woodstock pups. A whammy bar will not go out of tune if set up correctly by a professional. If it does, sometimes you can just hit the bar quickly (quick push on it) and everything goes back to normal. I'm no expert in whammys.
this is just absolutely awesome... and brought a tear to my eye as to how beautiful the edges guitar work is on this song. well done my friend and many many thanks for this.
Great video as always sir. If you can spend maybe 1 added moment on the first strumming pattern after the opening riff i'd be very happy. I have a bit of arthritis in my hands so my style has changed over the years and when i watch your videos it helps me to alter tones or strings a bit to suit my hands. Thank you again Michael on being the best video instructor period.
Got a joint replacement in my fret hand, which also affects the way I hold my drumstick. It's supposed to be better than my bone-on-bone friction, but it's been a year. Slow and steady wins the race. Hang in there.
Micheal thank you so much for putting the time and effort into getting these incredibly awesome tutorials together mate. Your videos inspired me to pick up a guitar and learn, and I'm just absolutely loving it! Thank you !
Thx! That's exactly what I discovered and why I decided to invest the time and figure out what Edge is really playing and then put what I learned in the videos.
Loved it. Subscribed. I can't find much other guitarists who can play so close to The Edge. And your tone is done unlike many guitarist where they chase after every single piece of guitar and gear that The Edge uses. Well Done Man.
HALLUP!! I got addicted!! I have listened to this version now about a dozen times or more (because the guitar volume is better than the original version) Still in heaven mode (: This song triggers some moments from the Tony Robbins seminar. Freedom, Strength and Gratitude. Well played, Michael. Can't wait to practise it.
Absolutely beautiful! I think I like this better than the guitar on the original. It sounds clean, clear, and really pops out at you. I’ve probably played this video like 100x just tonight
Wow, I'm humbled by your comment. Thank you! Part of what you're hearing is the guitar is slightly too high i the mix relative to the backtrack. I should have brought the guitar down just a little. But it helps for people to hear the guitar more for a tutorial.
The Axe-Fx is a proprietary product. You can only load the firmware into the Axe itself. It uses very high end RISC processors that are not in your computer. You just plug in your guitar into the Axe and connect speakers or headphones. You don't need our computer, although you can connect via USB to your computer for connecting with a DAW.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. What is great to some is not so great to others. Edge's other "guitarist" is his use of delays and shimmer. In my opinion his sound is big and wide. No other guitarist needed. He can sound like a full orchestra. His style is simple, but his discovery of tone thoughtful and complex. As one of the most successful rock bands ever, Edge must be doing something right. I appreciate you expressing your opinion in a professional manner.
Yes. You may get slightly different tone depending on the pickups, but you can adjust for that with your amp or amp model. Most who own a Squire and spend a lot of time on U2 might upgrade the pickups. I use Kinman Woodstocks. Most of the tone in songs like this is in the way you set up the AC30 or equivalent model. You have to get the right EQ and set the amp on the verge of breaking up. It's just just the guitar that's important.
@edensoto: Good question. The Liverpool is all analog and has a tone I can't describe. It reacts slightly differently to the delays and boosts. Some people hate this description, but it's "warmer" and a little less artificial. Don't get me wrong, the Axe models are fantastic and the difference is subtle. I have some vids up that compare the Axe models with the Liverpool. See my tutorials on Bad for these comparisons.
It's a Custom Shop Strat (based on 1960 version). It was made in 2003. Black with maple neck. I changed the pick guard and replaced pups with Kinman Woodstocks.
There is no such thing as "concert pitch." Bands tune down all the time and they also use alternate tunings. My guitar is tuned 1/2 step down in Eb. U2 does this often to make it easier for Bono to sing.
This tone is godlike. Absolutely best cover of this song....
Being primarily a bass player, I watched (and then re-watched) this set of vids because I was merely curious about Edge's tone and delay settings on this classic song. Keep it going michael please
Hi...what is the name of your pedal? Iam trying to get one like the one U2 used in Joshua Tree. By the way. Great cover, Man!
@@joseluissanchez6821 I use the Axe-Fx for all effects. It's the best. Even Edge uses them now.
Un freakin believable....ive been playing for 25 years and i cant get within a country mile of this quality
Thank you for the kind words, but I just work hard to imitate. Just muscle memory after listening to it a million times and playing it over and over. Unlike me, I'm sure your an accomplished guitarist after 25 years. I can't improvise but I can learn to play what I see and hear.

By pinching it off charlie burchill.
Listen to Ghostdancing intro.
Same riff.
Those second verse chords completely make this tracks so special
Hands down the best cover. Period. I'm impressed.. no doubt about it.
Very kind of you, thank you!
that sounded fantastic, well done the edge would be impressed im sure.
Maybe he is the edge...
brilliant as always. i have followed Michael for years and he has taught me the best of u2. however we have not heard from him for a while so i hope he is ok and is well
I'm still here! Working too hard. But I'll be back some day.
Great job on the cover. This is my favorite U2 song.
Your tone is outstanding!
The first cover that has played the chorus right. Most people do it at the 7th. I worked it out in 87 watching them live! Well done you!
I just got to say, the edge is a genius for coming up with this stuff..can you imagine...
Yes quite a bit you should try it sometime
Best cover on TH-cam
I’m Irish & a massive U2 fan & I’m quite impressed. Nice job
Incredible! Lot of hard work went into that, spot on. Bravo sir!!!

I mean we've never seen them in the same room together...
😊

Amazing piece of work, fantastic.

Very kind of you. That would be amazing, but hard to get selected and I don't think they would ever let me play Streets, LOL.

Out of all the U2 songs i want to learn this one the most, thanks for taking the time to make these

Edge, Edge........is that you? It's gotta be you! Just awesome mate, just awesome. My favourite U2 song, this sent shivers down my spine.
I love this...probably the best pop song ever...done right...great playing...spot on!
Very kind, thank you.
no prob...do you write your own stuff?...is it available to the public?...
Wonderful song, beautifully played and your tutorial is a pure joy to watch. After watching most of your videos, I think one understands why Bono calls The Edge "The scientist"! ;-) Keep these videos coming!
That was amazing - excellent control with the 16th note strumming pattern! The intro harmonics were awesome too!
Very kind of you, thank you!

still the best tuto I've found. thanks for all the work !
@U2GuitarTutorials there are no nuances in this tutorial. it is DEAD ON the slane version. great job! i love watching your tutorials.
Holy crap dude, that was awesome!
I keep coming back to this video...it is so well done!
Micheal thank you so much for putting the time and effort into getting these incredibly awesome tutorials together mate. Your videos inspired me to pick up a guitar and learn, and I'm just absolutely loving it! Thank you !
You killed it bro. God I love this song. So peaceful and relaxing good job on that cover
So crisp and fresh, I think I'm in love here.
Edge is all about the amp tone/settings.
seen them live last summer in Toronto awesome show
Why i found your video so late? best cover! i usually listen your cover while doing my work. good work budz
Tried many tabs, books and gave up. This vid tutorial nailed it!! Many thanks
Thx! That's exactly what I discovered and why I decided to invest the time and figure out what Edge is really playing and then put what I learned in the videos.
I don't know if people realize how tricky that intro timing is, but you nailed it! Great job, sweet tone, my hat's off to you!
Absolutely note perfect mate on a live version top drawer, The Edge would be very impressed indeed!
Best of the Best Cover!
You are a guitar genius!
Bravo and bravissimo!
Loved it. Subscribed. I can't find much other guitarists who can play so close to The Edge. And your tone is done unlike many guitarist where they chase after every single piece of guitar and gear that The Edge uses. Well Done Man.
As good as it gets Michael, really well done, perfection!
Wow! Thanks for the cover and tutorials. I appreciate it, and I'm sure many other guitarists do, too. Thumbs up!

i still like this version alot, the delay and strumming pattern in the intro is perfect michael. keep up the good work.
Absolutely spot on...tone technique everything, well played
You are simply amazing!!! Continue to do the good work.

Thanks so much for posting up this and other U2 covers! Brilliant job 👍

Yeah AVA!
The Edge perfected the use of the delay. Love AVA.

It's a Custom Shop Strat (based on 1960 version). It was made in 2003. Black with maple neck. I changed the pick guard and replaced pups with Kinman Woodstocks.
This looks like what he played at live aid. I got the same Strat (with a humbucker) because of the influence U2 had on my early music love.
Soooo clean sounds amazing.
There is no such thing as "concert pitch." Bands tune down all the time and they also use alternate tunings. My guitar is tuned 1/2 step down in Eb. U2 does this often to make it easier for Bono to sing.
Of course there is 440hz is the standard for concert pitch, what everyone does otherwise is their choice but there is concert pitch
I believe in performance pitch.
LOL so damn good. Thanks for sharing. It's a pleasure watching.
Padrisimooo...... El mejor de todos los tutoriales
simply..AWESOME cover and Awesome tone! ciao cheers!
Wow.....You just cant beat that. As good as The Edge.
Great job and awesome tone!
