I love how it's an effortless strategy, and the materials are things you already have at home! This is life changing for us, considering my daughter hated doing flashcards with letters, but has really taken to the matching with words. I'm confident that my daughter will be reading in no time, which at one time I though may not be possible!
I just applied the match game with my year old daughter Lily and she took to it immediatey..and today is the first day of the week so a new group of sight words to learn and there were no fights , no tears and I am amazed and grateful. THANK YOU

Every school year I get a handful of students who are either reading below grade level, still at the decoding words level and are not yet fluent readers, or who have an underlying learning disability and have yet to be identified under Child Find. Your strategies have confirmed my intervention as well as given me new ways to help students' literacy development. Even though these activities are designed for learners with developmental disabilities, I find they still work for all learners. Thank you so much. I hope you make more videos each focusing on a different skill (I.e., letter sounds; sight words; oral reading fluency; phonics; etc.) ❤️
Thank you! All I was ever taught even at masters level is OG is the best but many of my young students with low working don't go beyond blending cvc well at all! Thank goodness we can have another starting point!

@@a016202I get it people with Down syndrome are not as intelligent as the average person, but I think calling a human being a potato is really inappropriate. I think if you had a child with a disability, you wouldn’t want anyone to call them a vegetable or anyone viewing them as less than human.

The beauty of this approach is that you don't need lots of printed resources. Because you are starting with the words that are most motivating and high-meaning for your child, all you need to get going is some sheets of blank card, a fat pen and a pair of scissors.

Hello. Thank you so much for the info. I have a question. My baby is 3/12 years old and he is bilingual(English/ Spanish). He says some words but less than the average. Perhaps he knows how to say around 30 to 40 words in the combine languages. He says words in English and Spanish, however he doesn't say two words together yet. My question is... Should I focus more in the speaking part instead of focusing in teaching reading??? I was about to buy a book to teach kids to read. It's called "Children learning reading" by Jim Yang. Of course is not specialized for kids with trisomy 21 but I thought of giving it a chance. It looks pretty good. Thank you so much for your kind response! =)

Hello, I have a 5 year old daughter that is going to start kindergarden. How Can I start to teach her how to read or to know the sound of the letters. She gets confuse with the letter and the sound. Also, she can’t pronounce the Words correctly. She also does not want to talk, when I make her to say what she wants, she only say it and that’s it, she doesn’t say it by her self. Also she say only what I teach her, she doesn’t learn by her self like listening others. Is that normal? I don't know if I make myself understood but I have many doubts that I don't know if they are normal or not. I hope you can help me. How Can I start or what to do now that my daughter is starting kindergarden with her with his super limited speech. hela krichene I know this is really late but hang in there. I also have a brother with Down syndrome and everyday I try to teach him little by little. Sometimes it feels hopeless but the important thing is to stay motivated. I hope this helps

And yes, DS children may be able to learn basic reading using sight words, prompting, and pictures but they’ll never truly understand language or abstract concepts it takes to read a novel, follow multi-step instructions, etc. According to several published studies, most will never progress past the ability of an average 7-8 year old.

I had a adult Down Syndrome adult male in therapy who could read on a 3rd grade level but he did not comprehend what he read.

I can see the children speak and read, but what todo if child is severly speech delay? How this would work?
They don't need to speak when they read, it's fine for them to use the Makaton signs instead as they follow the text.
