I was publicly shamed for a bad relationship and 'kicked' out of my social group. I carried it around for a long time, it got to the point where I would believe people could look at me and tell I was the bad person others wanted me to believe I was.

This message rings true deeply in me. I feel like I live with a constant feeling of shame for whatever little thing I said or felt. It's as if I had an evil judge inside, constantly.
Also I'd like to add: accepting yourself is an incredibly powerful message. You can't change things that you havent yet accepted.

First time ever commenting here... I think shame is probably the biggest problem that I'm becoming aware in my life. Shame can destroy you completely! And shame it's the problem that no one wants to talk because of its very nature. I'm reading a book about shame from John Bradshaw that shows a lot of what I had been through. I'm so glad that in US there are much more awareness of the shame problem and help for shame-based persons then where I live. This shame thread is really extremely important on so many levels. Thanks a lot!!

I can see how shame can be imposed on people, but I'd argue that a lot of shame is self-induced. Not living up to expectations that you set for yourself for example can lead to shame , which I think everyone struggles with. its a natural emotion that can be manipulated and used to control people.

Dope video Elisha. I was raised by narcissists so I know exactly what you're talking about. Healthy shame is good for you, it keeps you in line and guides you and others. It's toxic shame that is the problem, usually comes from childhood and adolescence, being overly shamed, frequently and then isolating and letting all those thoughts and emotions ruminate. It eats you from inside out. Something that helped me clear shame and emotions surrounding it is EFT Tapping, u can tap on areas of your body and bring up emotions then release them - sounds like BS but it works wonders, give it a try, there's loads of vids on yt

Guilt and Shame are natural responses that we’ve done something wrong. The first 3/4ths of the video was a bit all over the place and sounded like encouragement to indulge in vices and addictions. But then the last 1/4th really summarized what I think is what you were trying to articulate. I’d say overall the modern world is severely lacking in feelings of shames, guilt, and remorse, but the pathway from shame>cope>addiction you talked about is a very true phenomenon. For anyone watching this, we’ve all fallen into that before. Where for the general person, the world has taught them to erase shame and embrace our toxic behaviors.

Sin is death. Sin means missing the mark. When we sin, we are out of alignment with God's perfect will for our lives. When we sin, we separate ourselves further from God's presence and peace in our lives. This is where the enemy wants you. He will use your shame to further divide you from the truth, the source. Religion misses the mark in relation to this, but true Christianity, is knowing Jesus died on the cross for all sin, for all of us, so that we can live in freedom, peace and have salvation without trying to be perfect, because he lived the perfect life for us as an example. Feed your spirit with the truth of Jesus Christ, not societal expectations, religious doctrines etc. By grace we are saved, and by following in his footsteps we will overcome all obstacles, even if we fall thousands of times. Accept yourself because God accepts you. There is a standard, there is a right and wrong, but stop being so rigid. God did not give you a sprit of fear, but of power, love and a calm mind. Bless you Eli, stay strong gents

@@yuri6947 In his Grace is where the healing and inner transformation can take place, but when we sin, we get in our own way, so repenting, confessing it to God (accepting every aspect of yourself) and picking up your cross daily in pursuit of spirit over flesh is everything. It's a daily battle but as long as you keep fighting you won't fail. I'm glad this helped man, this is just as much a reminder for myself as anyone else

I like the distinction between living with shame and being shameful here.
Accepting shame is much like working through bad memories. We hold onto bad memories because there is something we must face or deal with that we continue to hold onto and until we can find we are stuck in place.
Just like shame. Unless you find the meaning, or lack thereof, you will be weakened as you've described.
    Interesting stuff.

Accepting yourself is good. But I think humbling yourself is a better name for the same idea. Know your faults, and deal with them. Alot of people talk about self-acceptance or self-love nowadays, and use it as an excuse to remain who they are, and never rise above their faults, heck even going so far to identify with them. This is bad. They ought to know they are imperfect and not hate themselves for it, but they should also acknowledge that they can be someone else, someone better. But to truly do that means letting go of pride, and letting go of the illusion that they already are good, so they can embrace real hope. Sometimes it's good to be at war with yourself, and to be already happy knowing one is giving their all to become what God has destined them to be.

Important video, the west has a history of living in a 'guilt' type culture. This is due to the history of fuedalism and a control oriented form christianity. The east has had more 'shame' based culture, which is what you noted: chastisement by the group for dishonorable deeds. This is part of the reason why the east is more inclined to warrior type cultures. To liberate yourself and become the strongest version of yourself, you must let go of the guilt thinking, this is symbolised by Nietsche in the form of the pack camel of burden. To let go of the guilt is to unload your pack and say no: which is how you will eventually slay the dragon of life and become a king.

No one is living the life they evolved for. We cope with this in various ways, from healthy mind activity like meditation to the depths of depravity like PMO. Some get high to get by. I say that is a much less damaging activity than anything else federally illegal. There are scientific studies that show a positive relationship between cannabis use and bodybuilding numbers. Of course there are plenty of studies claiming the opposite but they were done wrong

The reason one feels shame from doing a particular act is because the act itself is inherently shameful. Religions have may or may not have things to say about certain shameful acts, which is secondary to the point. One doesn't have to be religious to have an instinctual feeling that doing something that would otherwise lead to feelings of guilt or shame, implies the act itself is the source. Why that is, gets into things like morals. But modernity tries to hide that conversation.
Masturbation for example, is deeply shameful and often accompanies a nagging guilt after doing so. This is because it undermines the purpose of sex, which is for procreation. The shame in this act is implicit, which is why people do these sort of things behind closed doors, where no one can see them, like say, one's parents, a roommate, a girlfriend, a wife or even their own kids. That's because there's nothing noble about it. Nobody posts on their FB account: "BRB gotta whack it again for the 12th time!"
Two pernicious lies modernity has spread stems from masturbation's connection with pronography: that it's "liberating" and that you're "free" to do so. Isn't it weird how pron is free? This, is the form of control, not religion. Pron has been used in warfare as well, look up Israel - Palestinian conflict back in '02. It's a covert form of bondage. What are you liberating yourself from? Self-Control? Order? Discipline? There's reasons for that, people like Augustine have spoken about it: a man has as many vices as he has masters. I'm all for making your own thoughts but there's wisdom to be gained from men like him, Plato, Socrates, and writers like Bradbury, Orwell, and Huxley. Learn as much as you can yourself, but there's significant value in gaining articulated knowledge of these concepts long before we were born and they often had the prescience to foresee consequences of things like uncontrolled passion, particularly in regards to sex.
You're "free" to drown in all the pron you want all right and waste away masturbating. Is that freedom? No. It's bondage, under the illusion of freedom. You're free alright...to become addicted to your passions and vices, and thus become controlled. And oftentimes you have to pay for it. So you're not only willingly becoming a slave, but you're happy to pay to be one. This is the essence how one is controlled, not by religion, which through Logos offers limits, meaning one can't find elsewhere, and truth which will set you free, but through The State; the more secular, the more depraved and totalitarian it will degenerate to.
Shame isn't necessarily what inhibits you per se. It's the shameful act, especially if it's masturbation. Masturbation is what causes one to feel isolated and alienated from the opposite sex. The lie here that is being promoted today is that there's no consequence to it and that it's completely harmless. Add pron to the mix and the pron clouds your mind and judgement, further alienating you from people, especially the opposite sex, as your mind becomes so warped from being desensitized to the grotesque stimuli needed to get off that you become a monster. This is the zombie consoomer that many have spoken about and detest. Reject becoming this. Reject the lies. You can do it.
Learn the easypeasymethod if need be, and get some spirituality to help you get through it. You can still be a tough man without it all being about you, all the time.
Lastly, if you're still reading this, let me leave you with a quote to consider and a book recommendation: Quote: "The man who becomes addicted to his vice learns to love his vice while simultaneously hating himself." - E. Michael Jones. Book recommendation: Logos Rising by E. Michael Jones.

What's the back story to this video? Seems like you've got a lot on your mind. Best of luck with that. Shame is a true beast only to be unleashed on the worst of the worst. It saves lives, but it also steals them. For most guilt is enough to send the signal that something is wrong, but if you're dealing with addictive behavior shame can get you stuck in that cycle of the behavior that caused the guilt, because of a sense of worthlessness, leading you right back to it for relief. It's such a tough thing. You want to set good standards and deter people from self destructive behavior, but for most cases leading people to shame isn't helping.
Man......God Bless anyone dealing with that. Crack open a bible and fine a therapist.
