    This is genius. Thank you! How come I've never heard of this DIY solution to clean carpet stains. My go to is Folex which works amazing on nail polish, wine and inkjet ink. Coffee not so much unless its fresh. My stain was from 14 oz Starbuck hot coffee with cream on a light beige carpet. I went through about 2 bottles of Flolex without much success. I used 3% Hydrogen Peroxide and could see it was working. A few more applications with some household ammonia rubbed in with my fingers (use gloves) as recommended and the stain just about completely gone. I appreciate the post.

      @@lynniespringer1705 Yes, this was very helpful. I bought the peroxide, still have some left over. We had to clean carpet that a dog peed all over; over a period of time. One carpet was too far gone with both stains and especially odor, so we replaced that. I had an enzyme product for the odor, but it was too soaked into the pad. The other carpet was salvageable; no odor, and this was huge for the stains. But like he says, it's just for organic stains. There was another spotter that I got from someone else's video which was helpful too; I can give you the link to the video with the recipe; very inexpensive to make.

    Okay, I did this and it worked! I noticed almost an immediate clearing of the stains, then they disappeared completely within just around 2 hours!! I towel dried the areas, poured a layer of baking soda over the areas to get rid of the excess moisture, vacuumed and opened windows. Definitely one of my favorite hacks now!

    • @TheStainGuide
      @TheStainGuide  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my experience, the ammonia odor goes away very quickly - after 30 minutes the odor is generally unnoticeable. Ammonia quickly and easily evaporates so it generally doesn't stay in the carpet very long. And the odor should be gone way before the carpet dries. I'm wondering if you might have added too much household ammonia to the carpet and therefore it is taking a long time for the ammonia to evaporate...
      If it is still an issue you can try rinsing the carpet with water and a shop vacuum.

    I wish I had known this back when my older cat kept getting sick. At that time I had one of those portable carpet shampooer. While it seemed to take care of the stain what I notice later was the soap that was recommended by Bissell took care of the dye on my carpet on every spot I had. It was a Bissell. Needless to say I threw all of that away. The carpet will be replaced before I sell my house. I might try your method on it now so I can get rid of the stains that I still have. At least part of the carpet will have a chance. Of course, I cannot help but be curious about the effectiveness on clothes.--- cotton or maybe even a synthetic blouse.

    Hi, Great video! I have watched it a couple of times now. I tried this about 3 times now for hot coffee on a light gray carpet. It seems to be better but there is also a brown ring around where I tried to clean it with white vinegar (before seeing your video). So there is a faint brown stain from the coffee and a new brownish stain around the area where I scrubbed. Is this called wicking? I had been diluting the 20 developer with water, but should I just put it straight onto the carpet? I just ordered more hydrogen peroxide 6%. When I get it should I try spraying that directly on? Thanks for your help!

    • @TheStainGuide
      @TheStainGuide  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, that is called wicking! Really it just means that you didn’t clean all the coffee out of the carpet so when the carpet was wet, the coffee migrated back up to the surface. Wicking can generally be resolved by cleaning the area with a spotter.
      For the faint brown stain, yes, you want to use full strength 20 volume hydrogen peroxide (no diluting).

      @TheStainGuide  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is a common comment I get from my followers is New Zealand and Australia. Cloudy ammonia will do the trick but I recommend rinsing it out of the carpet after using it. Rinsing can be done with a spray bottle filled with water and a small wet/dry vacuum.
      Rinsing household ammonia is less important because it doesn’t have soap in it and it will evaporate.
      Rinsing the soap is a good idea to prevent resoiling.

      Then if that doesn't work, I'll try a stain removal method like the hydrogen peroxide method in this video.

      Unfortunately the orange soda probably has synthetic dyes which cannot be oxidized with hydrogen peroxide. This method works great when the stain is caused by a natural dye (fruit, vegetables, urine, blood, coffee, wine, etc.). This method does not work well for synthetic dyes (food coloring, soda stains, Kool-Aid, etc.).

      I don't think I will make a video on synthetic dye removal. The proper way to remove these stains is with reducing agents. It requires special products and equipment. I think it is best to leave these stains to professional cleaners. The method that I think you are talking about (using an iron and ammonia) can remove these stains, but it can also remove the color from your carpet. I want to be careful not to recommend anything that could easily damage someone's carpet.

    Only thing I have at home with ammonia is Windex. Is it safe to follow up with Windex instead of pure ammonia?

    • @TheStainGuide
      @TheStainGuide  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Household ammonia has a high pH, which helps speed up the rate at which hydrogen peroxide breaks down into water and oxygen. I am not sure what the pH of Windex is, so I can't say if it will accelerate the hydrogen peroxide decomposition or not. As the hydrogen peroxide breaks down it reacts with the dye molecules causing them to become invisible. Hydrogen peroxide will still break down without the ammonia, it will just take more time. I would recommend using hydrogen peroxide on its own, instead on using hydrogen peroxide with Windex. Just note that this may take a long time. To give you an idea of how much time this can take, I once soaked a coffee stain with 6% hydrogen peroxide (no ammonia) and left it for 48 hours. After 48 hours, the stain was still just slightly visible, so I added new hydrogen peroxide and let it sit for another 48 hours. After a total of 96 hours, the stain was finally gone.
      6% hydrogen peroxide works much better than 3%. And 6% hydrogen peroxide with ammonia works better than 6% alone. Good luck!

    • @TheStainGuide
      @TheStainGuide  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think that is quite right. I can see an article stating that you should not mix certain household cleaning agents in general - maybe this is good advice as there are certainly some that you should not mix. For example, you should never mix chlorine bleach and ammonia. Mixing chlorine bleach and ammonia will create chloramine gas, which is toxic and dangerous. Household ammonia and hydrogen peroxide do not react to produce harmful gasses.
      Professional hair stylists mix hydrogen peroxide and ammonia to achieve permanent hair color change.
      I also see another article (based on a quick google search), it states that ammonia and hydrogen peroxide can cause an explosion. However, this would only happen with extremely high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide/ammonia. Household products like household ammonia and hair developer have very low concentrations of hydrogen peroxide and ammonia - in fact, these products are typically 90% + water.
      Thank you for your interest in safety. I appreciate your comment.

    Will this work on brown wicking?
    Dont know if our 30 year old carpet has jute backing, or if im dealing with soil that 3 dogs keep tracking in.

    • @TheStainGuide
      @TheStainGuide  ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't use this method to resolve a wicking problem. Here is what I would do:
      1) check to make sure you are in fact having a wicking problem. This can be done by cleaning the carpet or doing spot removal on the affected areas. If immediately after cleaning, the carpet looks clean, but then the stain reappears as the carpet is drying, then you can confirm that you have a wicking problem. A lot of the time stains will reappear as the carpet dries because we didn't remove all of the original contaminant. This happens a lot with beverages like coffee, soda...
      2) check to make sure that the problem isn't being caused by having too much spotter/soap residue in the carpet. Sometimes we get a spot in our carpet and we clean it with a spotter, then weeks/months later a brown spot will reappear in the carpet. This brown spot is actually caused because we did not rinse the spotter out of the carpet after cleaning. Soaps attract soils, and if you have soap residue in your carpet, then you essentially have a dirt magnet.
      To check both of items 1 and 2, I will refer you to this video on how to remove spots from carpet: th-cam.com/video/zGn2TKIWeRo/w-d-xo.html
      If neither of the first two steps help, then you could give this video a try and attempt to treat it as a permanent stain. Good luck!

      @@TheStainGuide we dont have any splilled stains. The bissel carpet cleaner leaves the carpet like brand new immediately. 2hrs later the wicking clouds are back. If i do one pass or 20, the water in the bissle looks like choclste milk. If i put fans on it, the area closest to the fan turns the most brown from drying it out and the wicking following. Ecapsulstion didnt help, the peroxide/anmmonia doesnt seem to help, dry carpet powders dont work, but water really makes it break down and suck up with the bissel, but then while drying, the water then makes the wicking worse. I cant come up with a solution to spray on and wipe up the brown wicking stains onto a cotton towel.

    • @TheStainGuide
      @TheStainGuide  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Okay, thanks for the additional info. So as I understand, this is a problem that exists all over your carpet, not just in a few small spots?
      It sounds like you have a high pH problem that is caused by an accumulation of carpet shampoo residue that has built up in the carpet. What happens is the high pH soap residue will oxidize which will result in browning of the carpet. So the carpet is clean, you just have a bunch of oxidized soap residue that has caused the carpet to brown. Much like when you cut an apple in half, it turns brown, the same thing is happening in your carpet.
      The solution is to neutralize the carpet pH. A professional carpet cleaner would do an acid rinse to correct the problem. Normally carpet cleaners use a high pH pre-spray and then do a low pH rinse. To correct the problem a carpet cleaner needs to just do an low ph rinse, and skip the pre-spray.
      Before you do anything else, you should confirm that this problem is in fact caused by a high pH issue.
      Here is what I would do:
      Do a quick test in a small area on your carpet - maybe 2 ft by 2 ft. using a spray bottle with vinegar, spray the area with vinegar (vinegar has a low pH). allow the vinegar to dwell for 15 minutes. Then do 1 rinse using your carpet cleaning machine (with water only, no soap). After, use a towel to speed dry the area. get as much moisture out of the carpet as possible using a dry white towel. See it this fixes the problem in the small test area. The vinegar smell will go away as the carpet dries.

      @howardredder3582 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheStainGuide i sprayed the Vinegar, and waited 15 minutes and rinsed with Bissle carpet cleaner,and dryed with towels. Put fan in place,..and in one hour the carpet turned brown again big time.

    • @TheStainGuide
      @TheStainGuide  ปีที่แล้ว

      It really sounds like a pH problem to me - soap residue is oxidizing as the carpet dries which is causing browning. The faster the carpet dries, the faster the oxidation occurs. It is possible that it could be something else - I'm not sure what though...
      It does not sound like a wicking problem from a natural carpet backing. Wicking tends to be worse in areas that dry slower. One way carpet cleaners prevent wicking is by speed drying the carpet so it doesn't make sense that the most browning occurs in the areas that are drying the fastest.
      I would consider hiring a professional carpet cleaner who can do a pH test on the carpet and follow that up with a pH adjustment with professional grade products/equipment.

      This method (hydrogen peroxide and ammonia) is essentially a copy cat method for what is used in salons to bleach hair. Similar to how using hydrogen peroxide and ammonia to bleach hair is not great for your hair, it is also not great for natural fibers in carpet. It is highly unlikely that using this method once or twice on a wool carpet will result in any noticeable damage, however, if you used it over and over again in the same spot, it would likely cause some noticeable wear and tear on your carpet.
      This method is actually great for synthetic carpets, as synthetic carpets are very resilient and cannot be easily damaged by this reaction.
      And yes, I highly recommend testing every method in an inconspicuous area on your carpet before using in an openly visible area. This is always good practice.

      There is a good chance that it will work on most vomit stains, but it really depends of the stain and what type of food was in the vomit. Typically the pigments from the contents of the vomit (food) will latch onto the carpet fibers resulting in a stain.
      As an example, some pet owners give their pets turmeric supplements. If your pet throws up on the carpet after eating a turmeric supplement, it will leave a yellow stain. This is an example of a type of vomit stain that cannot be removed with this method.

Ammonia completely evaporates, so once the stain fully dries, the stain should return to yellow (as long as you are using pure ammonia).
      But what you really what is to bring your carpet back to its original color, and to do this, you need to use an advanced oxidation reaction to break down the curcumin pigments. Unfortunately, the method that I explain in this video is not strong enough to break down curcumin pigments.
      If you are dealing with a turmeric stain, give this video a try and it should totally eliminate the yellow or orange stains from your carpet: th-cam.com/video/vTMVyVGvgWs/w-d-xo.html

      This method does not work very well for turmeric stains. I'd recommend giving this video a try: th-cam.com/video/vTMVyVGvgWs/w-d-xo.html
