Back in school I remember we were required to learn multiple languages a lot of Albanians speak few languages it's very common. We have beautiful beaches. We just don't want bad tourists to come and do bad things in our country.
Although a majority of Albanians are statistically identified as Muslims, it's important to note that most Albanians don't actively practice religion. The label of being a Muslim majority largely reflects historical data from over a century ago, before communism. For Albanians, national identity and cultural traditions are far more significant than religious affiliation. This is why you see such strong religious coexistence in the country, with Muslims, Christians, and followers of other faiths living together harmoniously.
So sick of this....'muslim' means nothing more in Albania than a connection with a last name. There is no real cultural connection to the religion, and overwhelmingly we do not know anything about it. WE are not non-practicing either. How can you be non-practicing of a religion we know nothing about. Well in many regions of the census continues to just automatically identivy religion by last name too, which is hilarious
I totally agree with you guys. To add more to the topic, the historical data are one sided because Ottoman Empire was the only one to count the Numbers and of course wanted to make it appear as a success regarding the transition from Christian to Islam. I doubt they were referring accurate data as long as no neutral bodies to observe it were present at the time. And now even more is by no chance the majority Muslims. The propaganda from Islamic countries to increase artificially the counts, and from certain neighbors who want insistenly to make Albanians appear as newcomers in the Balkans and not autochthon is higher than ever. We have to be aware of this.
@@ME-gp7wc Albanian Muslims are more concerned with this "label" Christian Albanians do not pay attention to that; in the end they are Christians and don't care what others say. I have a Christian Albanian friend who says "mashalla" and "ishalla", and "shyqyr" more then Muslim Albanians. Over a hundred years independence from the long Ottoman rule has not removed Albania from the grips of the Medieval Ottoman mentality. Tirana is changing rapidly! I've visited Albania for the last 3 years... in 2022, I don't think I met a single non-Balkan tourist. In 2023, I started to see the occasional Brit, American, German, French etc... in 2024, I was blown away by how many tourists I saw, and this was before the tourist season even started! It's good to see, because Albania really needs a step-up for its economy. I have also noticed that many of the streets are being sorted out, with the infrastructure improving, better sidewalks, less deadly holes lol. Sadly, with this will no doubt come gentrification and overtouristification, but this will be concentrated in tirana/seranda/vlora/durres and will bring a lot of opportunities for the Albanian people :)
@veryvalerie__ Just returned from a month-long trip to Albania. Amazing place wich is only recently opening to tourism. The best bet for you would be to have a local Albanian guide or accompany you. Many places that we could not visit in a month. Will return as soon as we can. There are many things to fix in Albania, but generally the country is very safe; petty crime so rampant in Rome and other European cities, generally affect tourists in Albania. Otherwise, the wellbeing and the life of foreigners in Albania is a given, as Albanians have a code of honor up to giving their life to save the guest's life. Any tourist would do great in Albania; just don't be a jerk, and you'd be treated like a royal.
@@mattimatti35 It is a Muslim majority, but it is Europe; you could find more Muslim religious zealots in any city in Western Europe than in Albania. Religion plays almost no role in the societal regulation of Albania. You find men named Christian Islami, etc. Muslims regularly drink alcohol (Raki) just like Christians do Greece or Serbia (if not drinking more than the others!), and many would eat pork, without thinking twice. "Halal" for Albanians is when they pay for the meat regardles if it is pork or lamb. If they steal the meat/steak, that is not "halal". They don't pay the religious guy to "make" the meat halal, they go to the butcher. But, yes, as a Muslim majority there are many mosques all over (sometimes next to or nearby a chrurch), most probably sponsored by Turkey (the former ruler) and other Islamic countries that try to hold onto Albania's past as long as they can. There are a handfull of Albanians adherent in Islam, who wear the habits as you might see them in Rome, London, and New York. Some of them are paid or sponsored by Muslim charity groups from Yemen, Kuwait, etc., and some are just obedient ("muslim") to the religion of their parents or grandparents who inherited it from the 500 years long Ottoman rule.
Hello from CA. Notice US bloggers moving to Albania due 2 easy visa. U.S. citizens may stay up to one year in Albania without applying for a residency permit? Looks like a great location in Eastern Europe next to Greece & Croatia. Don't worry about your pronunciation.
First of all Albania is not a Muslim country is a secular country with all religions and only 46% of population identify as Muslim but are very liberal when the majority don’t go to mosque and drink alcohol you can check the census which was carried out last year you will see lots of churches around the country so next time a bit more research before speaking won’t hurt
70% are muslims (bektashi is a shija form of islam), but secular. 30% are undeclared. Btw: lots of migration has (usually from religious places) are the reason there is fewer religious (muslims and catholics).
@@flo2677 wtf are you talking about i just literally googled right now 2023 census says Islam is not anymore a majority in Albania 49% identify muslims but only around 10% pratice 7.9% orthodox christian, 10% catholic the rest was undeclared and atheists. and Bektashis are not even muslims they use a bible and a quran they dont have mosques but tempels so stop lying here and go lie to someone else people can literally google just like i did. dont even know why someone would even lie about religion we can clearly see streets of Tirana no one gives the vibe of being muslim or religious. Didnt you hear they were the first country in the world atheist for 50 years until 1990 when did they become religious overnight? stupid
To be fair he saw a chat gtp resume of Albania. Albania is different religiously because everyone is so understanding of the fsiths of others if they have one. The Jews of the world remember Albanians fondly because Albanians get this right. I am not bothered if people get the religion thing wrong as long as they love Albania fir what they experienced rather than what they read. I have always felt safe and wecomed. I knew the story of your cardinal and how others were persecuted for faith. Lac is special to me. Do I am aware of it's religious mix. My shock was tgst he did not have cash. I find his videos boring. No offence, but I feel like he just picked places randomly and doesn’t have a clue about the culture or history. He travels by himself without any knowledge of country he is visiting. I came upon his clips when he visited Belgrade,Serbia. Then you have Jibri Bell who really knows where every tourist should go and visit. Especially since Belgrade is one of the top 10 European cities you should visit for nightlife. And much more. And then you have this guy…..As for Albania, friends told me beaches are beautiful,I don’t know much except that. But when I see his videos it doesn’t give me any feeling or urge to go and visit . As for Tampa, beatifull place. Would love to visit again.
Visiting Sofia for the first time, met two women in her early 60ies from NYC on a guided city tour. They were in the process of moving to Sofia permanently... I was lucky in the birth place lottery. One of the strongest passports in the EU.
Just in case there is some confusion here, Albania is NOT "a majority Muslim country". People who practice religion are likely less than 10% of the population (and almost half of those are Catholic/Orthodox). On top of that and as you correctly explained, Albania was an atheist country for almost half a century. This kind of rhetoric has historically undermined the image of our country and we are to this day still suffering political consequences because of it with the rest of Europe.
So rightly described. And those Numbers are accurate, as per UNDP survey. Let's stop the Arabic propaganda and our neighbor thesis who want to appear as as foreigners in our land.
How I love this city! The atmosphere, streets, culture - everything is just incredible! Great video! What places in Tirana would you recommend visiting first?
@@mizzo2006 Yep, that probably could be the "culture shock" to see a mosque in Europe... but this Sly did not say that. Albania is a mixed religion country with a majority muslim population; suni and a shia sect (bectashi), and Christian, both Catholic and Greek Orthodox. Also a small Evangelical group as well as a very small Jewish presence. Albanians never had any troubles among religious gropus; many people in Albania do not adhere to any religion whatsoever; official religion was banned under the communist regime; churches and mosques were closed; either destroyed or used for prophane purposes by the communist regime. Many Muslim Albanians carry Christian names; there is actually a news anchor or journalist named "Christian Islami"... laughable to have in the name both christianity and islam (muslim)... but no surprize there, because there was this Italian soccer player named Christiano Pagano (Christian and Pagan at the same time???)
@@dondardha1993 I think that was my point on my reply to "Sly". It is not that I see the absence of an organized religion in Albania as a good thing. We all know, the majority of wars and troubles around the world, now and in the past circle around religion. Remember Crusades and other "holy" wars. Not having an established strong religion, means that you do not belong on either side; and indeed, that is the trouble with Albanian society now and in the past.
Thank you for covering Albania! I really hope you had a great time in my city 😁 I just wish you would have stayed in a better hotel room cause that was so small 😂😂 I’m a Protestant and we have four official religions here in Albania, Muslim, Catholic Christians, Orthodox Christians and Protestants or Evangelicals. Thanx for taking the time man - I enjoyed it. As a soon to be retired American - always looking a cost friendly countries to visit and maybe stay awhile. This was a nice little walk through if the city anyway- I hear this time of year the beaches are incredible crowded and have to watch out for the $10.00 beach chair mafia...LOL - still sounds fun
Albania is the perfect place to live for retired people from EU and USA because the cost of living is very cheap for some time I think so, people are very friendly, they like to talk with strangers, don't hesitate to ask anything because they are very helpful ,it's a place with the weather like in italy and spain, from the capital city you will need less than one hour to go to nearest beach and also to the mountains, food is very delicious and cheap but not for the local people, ect. The most powerful institution if I can say like this is US Embassy because people in this country believe more in US Embassy as in their government, after God the mos important state, word or people is the name UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
one of the most beautiful people , cultures, and language if not the most thats my opinion. im more of a river person that ocean since i grew up near the ocean. im planning a trip but i want to go next summer. its actually a mix of muslim, some non practicing about 4 percent roman catholic , and some 5 percent orthodox its very mixed religion wise very peaceful folks mostly that nation has been through alot . i perfer northern Albania im a sucker for mountains and valleys a nice beach is good too but i assume that will be more expensive near the summer rush.
Nah man! Albania is not only Tirana! You've got to check other areas of our country especially what the kid told you our Riviera and our Alps. That dish you ate is a summer dish and that bread was not just a bread but a hearty bread. Yep, you right. Our language is unique and some of our linguists will tell you is the oldest in the world which I don't agree. But to ring a bell in you the word in Bible "Genesis" is actually an Albanian word "Gjeneza" which means beginning. Islam is the predominant religion in my country but 45 years of communism have turned a large amount Albanians secular or nonbelievers. Albanian was the only country in the world in 1967 to be declared in the United Nations an atheist country.

A lot of Albanians live outside of Albania for reasons you talked about. The communist regime drove a lot of people away especially because of the banning of religion. You cannot forget all the conflict in the area as well. So many wars, so much death, of course people tried to escape and seek refuge in places all across the world. USA, all over Europe, Australia, Turkey, Albanians can be found in all corners of the world.
Albanians didn't leave because the communist regime drove them away. During communism, we were closed off and almost nobody left. This immigration has nothing to do with the banning of religion either. It's mostly due to the transition period into democracy and the corrupt mafia-like politicians that have taken over the country for the last 30+ years while the rest of the population barely made ends meet.
Toutes les religions sont des instruments de soumission et de domination. Seule la connaissance permet à l'homme d'avancer en renforçant les liens avec tous les autres, indépendamment des différences sociales, culturelles ou linguistiques.

This is wrong. The Hungarian language belongs to the Finno-Ugric group of languages. Hungarians (Ugrians) are immigrants from the north, the closest relatives of the Mansi tribe. Every year the people of this group: Finns, Estonians, Komi, Hungarians, Mordovians, Mari, Udmurts, Khanty, Mansi and others organize festivals, holidays, concerts, and the Hungarians always come. Believe me, the Hungarians still have a lot in common from the past with these peoples in language, traditions, and culture.

So cool to hear the language! Thank you for another amazing tour!
As a Londoner this year Albania has been spoken about and visited more, it's now on my list too
Please look up places not just TH-cam. Just saw a guy that made Shkoder look boring... It is fun
You will enjoy it. The Nature is amazing the people are friendly and you dont have to worry about your safety at all.
Cool. But just don't consider here as a muslim country like this dude.. OK?

Just returned from a month-long trip to Albania.
Sly no one is judging you, and if they are , thats their problem, you’re doing you’re thing👍
Hello from CA. Notice US bloggers moving to Albania due 2 easy visa. U.S. citizens may stay up to one year in Albania without applying for a residency permit? Looks like a great location in Eastern Europe next to Greece & Croatia. Don't worry about your pronunciation.
Albania has been on our list for the minute! Hoping to visit soon. Appreciated the interesting history you shared.
Checkout the beaches also.
@@flo2677 Most Albanians from Albania have been non-religious since communist times.
Albanian people are not Muslim...we don't identify as Muslim.....That's ottoman empire leftovers
Like so many You Tubers they offer many opinions based on no first hand info or research. I was just pleased to see a hotel and restaurant that I know!
Been watching your videos lately. I've been to Tirana twice and will return late November for long term. U.S. citizens get 1year visa. I could live there for 800USD per month. I'm a native New Yorker now in Tampa,Fl. Been to most of western europe but will focus on easter europe this time for at least 1 2 years. happy travels !!

@@HK-pp9igthe majority of Albanians dont care and dont speak about religion. Only 3% practice it
@@dondardha1993 I think that was my point on my reply to "Sly".
It is not that I see the absence of an organized religion in Albania as a good thing. We all know, the majority of wars and troubles around the world, now and in the past circle around religion. Remember Crusades and other "holy" wars. Not having an established strong religion, means that you do not belong on either side; and indeed, that is the trouble with Albanian society now and in the past.

because the cost of living is very cheap for some time I think so, people are very friendly, they like to talk with strangers, don't hesitate to ask anything because they are very helpful ,it's a place with the weather like in italy and spain, from the capital city you will need less than one hour to go to nearest beach and also to the mountains, food is very delicious and cheap but not for the local people, ect. The most powerful institution if I can say like this is US Embassy because people in this country believe more in US Embassy as in their government, after God the mos important state, word or people is the name UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

But to ring a bell in you the word in Bible "Genesis" is actually an Albanian word "Gjeneza" which means beginning. There's a sizeable Albanian community in the US, mostly in the Northeast and the Great Lakes region
They are often concentrated in the Greater Philadelphia, Greater Boston, Metro Detroit, Chicagoland, Tampa and Jacksonville, Florida; New York City, and Waterbury, Connecticut areas
About three-quarters of the Albanian American population lives in the aforementioned Eastern U.S. states (52,000 in New York State, 30,000 in Michigan, 21,000 in Massachusetts, 16,000 in Florida, 15,000 in Illinois, 15,000 in New Jersey, and 12,000 in Connecticut)
There are also smaller, yet sizable communities within the Midwest such as Greater Cleveland, and Kenosha and Milwaukee, and as well as smaller East Coast communities like that of in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area that encompasses Northern Virginia and Maryland. West of the Mississippi River, there are smaller ethnic Albanian communities in Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Phoenix, and San Diego areas
In 2024, there were 224,000 counted people of Albanian descent living in the United States

A lot of Albanians live outside of Albania for reasons you talked about. The communist regime drove a lot of people away especially because of the banning of religion.
