I'll never forget back in 2003 at Yankee stadium and how badly he got booed walking to the dugout after an at-bat. I was lucky enough to be fairly close to him watching him absolutely laugh his head off at the booing, and have had a ton of respect for him ever since. Long live BIG PAPI.

From a lifelong diehard Yankee fan I have so much love and respect for big papi.. I remember as a kid being at Yankee stadium watching the red Sox take infield practice. I was blessed to have really good seats along the first baseline and I was jokingly booing papi as he took ground balls at first during BP, then suddenly he back handedly snagged a high hop very impressively, He then looked over at me and said " see i should be playing 1st base over Millar" (who was behind him laughing) ever since then I liked papi even as a Yankee fan.

I met a woman from the DR who was a big Ortiz fan. We probably talked for half an hour about him, and not once did she mention his on-field accomplishments. She spent the whole time describing how his offseasons were spent back home in Santo Domingo setting up a charity network to help get doctors to people who couldn't afford medical care or get themselves to a hospital. You hear about players supporting big charities all the time, but this was a player giving his time -- a thing he has no more of than an average person -- to help his community. It really spoke to his character and reinforced my belief that I'd picked a truly great person to look up to.

Whenever I watch stuff on this like the documentaries it always basically brings me to tears. Remembering this when I was a kid and how everything happened and baseball at that time especially as a Sox fan living in Boston, going to these games was absolutely the golden era of baseball/Sox fandom
    Also R.I.P. Jerry Remy! LEGEND!
Edit: Im talking about that 2004 era with the 86 year curse broken, those series with the yankees in 2003 (which was heartbreaking especially watching Tim Wakefield walk off the field because hes a Legend too (He got redemption though). and then the series in 2004 was just legendary (only MLB team to ever come back to win a series down 3-0). The brawl with Jason Varitek shoving his glove into miss a-rods face then don zimmer coming after Pedro so Pedro shoved old donnyboy to the ground (that sh*t was wild)
I was sitting right next to Pesky’s Pole when Manny Ramirez hit that walk off HR in game 2 of the ALDS in 2007 and later won the WS
Also that 2013 playoff run after the bombing and the way Ortiz put the team on his back to win that title was insane! Dude was hitting over .500 in the playoffs/WS with buttload of clutch HRs/Hits/RBI/Runs. The dude hit .688 in the World Series. Let me repeat that...DAVID ORTIZ HIT .688 IN THAT WORLD SERIES

    • @davidlafleche1142

I give Valentine a pass. The players were 100% to blame when Francona was fired. ("I lost the clubhouse," he said.) Management punished them by hiring Bobby Valentine. He was actually a good manager, but the Old School style (much like Dick Williams), and he didn't tolerate prima donnas.
My favorite moment: Felix Doubront was having his usual issues. Remember him? He had great stuff, and should have been just as good as Pedro Martinez; but he was a total idiot. Doubront would be lights out for three innings, then blow up. One day, he did that, and had a temper tantrum. "The umpire is squeezing me!" (i.e., a tight strike zone) Valentine told him flat out, "The problem here is not the umpire! The problem here is YOU!" I feel sorry for Bobby Valentine. He inherited a team of whiners who quit on Francona (the best manager they ever had), and I don't blame him at all. It was 100% the players' fault.

David Ortiz WAS the Red Sox for over a decade. The main had such charisma and presence, and that personality! And he had so many great moments. His hitting in games 4 and 5 of the 04 ALCS will always be remembered. And while people remember him hitting the homer in game 7 I think a lot of people forget the impact it had. Like you said, Damon had just been thrown out at the plate and Yankee Stadium was raucious. Ortiz comes up, nails a 2 run shot into the left field seats and silences 50,000 people in a matter of seconds.
But I think my favorite Ortiz story is this. I was at a sports bar one day, watching the game. I was sitting next to a guy and we got to talking about the team. He mentioned that he and his little boy had gone to New York to see the Yankee/Sox game there. After the game they were on the subway, and his son was in he Ortiz jersey. A guy on the train asked him if he was a big Ortiz fan and the little boy got all excited. "YES! ORTIZ IS MY FAVORITE PLAYER!" The guy on the train smiled at the boy and told him, "Good, he is a great player. We Yankee fans respect and fear him so much that when he comes up to bat against us we don't mention his name." I thought that was a great story because it shows just how much a feared hitter he was.

No matter how much baseball you watch, you know the guys who play for *your* team in a way that the other fanbases cannot. Unless you live through the grind, the low-stakes games and the losing seasons along with the highlight reel moments and postseason magic. I’m a lifelong Red Sox fan, 38 y/o here in 2024, so I was right there for every second of Big Papi’s time in Boston. Even though, like I said, I can’t speak on other teams’ superstars of that era like I can Papi, Manny, Pedro, Devers, etc, I feel confident in saying that David Ortiz is one of the 3 best players in the past 25 years of MLB. His postseason record speaks for itself, but his day-in, day-out mastery, the electric energy when he stepped up to the plate, and his ability to both inspire his teammates and (if that didn’t work) put them ALL on his back and mash with the strength of 9 men… that is what puts him in that god-tier. Putting aside pitchers, I struggle to think of a post-2000s player who played at quite the same caliber as Big Papi.
Who is the guy from *your* team that belongs in that top 3 of the 21st cent. conversation?

As amazing as what he accomplished on the field was, the Maverick story seals the deal for me. Papi is like a fairytale, and had I not witnessed it firsthand throughout his time here in Boston, I never would have believed it. He wasn't the greatest baseball player to ever live, but he was and is the most beloved player in all of sports history to this Red Sox fan. Forever the man, forever a fan.

I'll never forget that fucking grand slam in 2013. As a Tigers fan who was in 6th grade when they made it in 2006, I watched Papi murder my franchise's dynasty and any hope they had to win a World Series.

I remember when the Red Sox signed him and people were like "Who?". I told them, "Watch this kid, he's got a major swing". I'm so glad the Sox picked him up. LEGEND.

Love Big Papi….! He embraced the city of Boston with a passion….
And talk about CLUTCH..! Too many memories to count of Ortiz hitting walk off HRs or huge Playoff hits. The Tori Hunter falling over the wall Grand Slam gives me chills every time I see it & oh how he crushed the hated Yankees..! The 04 game 4 walk off,…And absolutely destroying the Cards in the 07 series. If the game was close just get Papi to the plate at all cost & more often than not he delivered .! Clutch Clutch Clutch …! Great to see him in the HOF where he belongs …

David was a great hitter, very likeable and even much better respected human being. He was an excellent Designated Hitter meaning 1/2 a ballplayer. That said, as a long baseball fan undeserving of entry into Hall of Fame.

He definitely should be HOF. I’m a Yankees fan, and watched an incredible opponent with awe every time he came to bat. I’ve got a ton of respect for Big Papi, and can qualify that he was one of the most clutch players of my time. Also, I too have murdered a few phones along the way.

As a Twins fan from Fresno Ca, I've waited for this story for 20 years! I've researched it and asked for it and it always eluded me. My entire life local news does not report Twins news et' all. and no one ever gives this explanation when you live so far from the team you love. I'm sure locally in Minnesota there were reports but zero in California.
It didn't help that Ortiz was overrated and really not all that good for the Twins, then blasted into stardom after leaving, but still noone ever gave this report.
    So, Thank you.
