That's exactly what I pointed out that also should be checked and I've always had opposition from drivers that that doesn't matter that you should just look at the jaws. Figures I knew I was right lol the absolute first thing I've always looked at when I get out of the truck is that pin and then check the jaws. Perfect example of why I don't rely on everything everyone tells me to make sure it's all up to snuff.
Always Always Always visually and Physically check the Bolt, Handle and King Pin Jaws before you drive away! Every time you walk away from the Tractor and Trailer.
I've came across that scenario before where the jaw just wouldn't lock. Took the truck over to detail where I was working & they steam washed the entire 5th wheel. Gets all the old grease & road gunk out. Re-grease & like knew. My current company runs those Holland 5th wheels also. When I started they guy that gave me the road test said on the end of that bolt is a wedge that keeps the jaws from opening back up once locked.
Always visually check the jaws and a tug test too … also check jaws when your stopped at any location when you been away from the truck .. you just never know
Great information thank you.

Pin in, Handle in, Jaws Locked, Lets ROCK!
If not try to hook again. Good catch Rich!
It’s called a Holland fifth wheel, that bolt lets you know that it’s locked. If there’s any kind of gap, it’s not locked properly

Correct! Many driver say they never noticed the bolt or knew why it mattered
