Hello from Germany! Think about buying this bike as a beginner (at age 43), think it would be perfect for commuting and travelling. Actually you don`t need more "bike". Fun fact: I`m born and raised in the district of berlin where the BMW motorcycle factory is ;-) So some periods of my life I drove by the factory every day ;-)
I’m very close in age to you, I bought one as my first bike. I LOVE IT! I hardly drive my w124’s. After 1.5 years with it, I trail ride, twisties. Make sure tires are properly inflated for max handling.
yes great bike but the only thing german on this bike is the BMW emblem sticker even the engine comes from AUSTRIA . GREAT little tourer and good on price . ride safe
I have one here in Japan, bought it for 1500 bucks and been riding it two years now. It's such a perfect bike for traffic and cruis'n through the countryside!
Great review. Most don't have such good engine sound from the riders position. I bought an '04 a few years ago. I seem to like it more each year. I like your tire combo. I have a 40% trail on the back and 40% street on the front and I love it. It's a good back road bike. And on the highway peak torque is 5000 rpm at 75 mph. So that's excellent. And it will go close to 300 miles on a tank.
5k revs for 75mph = 15mph per 1000 revs. Fine. My 2004 Dakar was the same. I have just changed the sprockets to 17 tooth front sprocket. 44 tooth rear . Now reading 17mph per 1000 revs in 5th. = just under 70mph at 4k revs. Checked speedo accuracy with speedo phone app. Bike Speedo reads close to app. Therefore 17 front, 44 rear works well for road work . Hope this is useful . Have a couple of bikes. Love this simple 650 single ❤
I heard some guys said the 1st and 2nd gears are tall so they installed a front sprocket with one that's 1 tooth smaller for better acceleration. I am looking at getting the 2010 twin F650GS as my first bike, just totally great reviews. Did your sprocket change also help with acceleration, was that the intention? Thanks.
Nice review. I have a friend with a 1999 version that he still rides. He doesn't do extreme offroad, but country dirt roads or forest service roads he is fine.
I owned one of these for years when I lived in San Francisco. Had the same windscreen, and the same color. I miss this bike so damn bad! Your vid brought back a *ton* of great memories. :)
Beautiful specimen, I'd buy that in a nano-second. The low seat height is primarily for ease of getting legs to the ground easily and quickly, particularly off-road.
Good review of the machine. I have watched a few, and now I will know the control layout when I test ride a 2001 model next weekend. Love the utilitarian practicality and ease of maintenance on BMs, both cars and bikes!
I know this is probably totally lame of me but I can't really handle the "reading while riding" and the shorts vibe. You're probably a super experienced rider but I just think riding bikes deserves a little more attention to the basics. That said, thanks for the review. I found it useful.

I own this bike since 5 years, riding only in the city to go to work, in Brussels (Belgium). Same colour, cannot define if it's bleue or gray... but with Belgian weather, it's turning gray anyway. It's one of the rare trails I can ride, as I'm 5.5 (1.65m). I started riding late (45), it’s my second bike, really easy for beginners. The 650 is nice between 2000 rpm and 4000 rpm. No need to go higher, drive it like a diesel engine. One mod that can be useful, I’d like an adjustable clutch command, it's a bit too far for me. Metzeler Tourance Next are great if you ride it only on the road. OEM spare parts are not that expensive, but BMW garages make you pay a lot for the work. To be honest, reliability isn't as good as the legend says (battery, water pump, cables, electronics).
I have the exact bike and it's my first I love it. I would definitely recommend it for the first bike. Handles good has a good amount of power but not super fast and I cruise at 70 no problem . With saddle bags and stuff it's a little rough but I took them off
thx for the video - I'd like to add one thing which is a super practical consideration - you can pick this bike up by yourself if/when you drop it.....
You can get BMW G650 gs sertao that has the 21 inch front spoke wheels and it makes it a lit better for off road use . The one you are showing is more for the street .The Sertao is more for off road so it makes it the best for dual sport riding . Enduro is really off road only . Dual sport is for both . You should change your title to dual sport .
Is this a good bike for someone who wants a first motorcycle and only experience is bicycle? Also is it a good idea to use this bike to learn to drive?

Best bike in the world, reliable, easy to handle and service, behaves great on-road and off-road. Get one while they are still available. BMW is far from making a similar great bike again, I wonder why they stopped making it. Sorry, but the new bikes are really shit, expensive, heavy and miss the proper handling of the 650GS and with useless compicated powerful engines. Why would you need 100hp on a dual sport bike? @@luukwolf161 It doesn't have good wind protection, at about 120km/h it starts vibrating harder than usual, so you won't be able to push it past that with ease, it has only 5 speeds so you'll miss the 6th when riding on highway. For trips up to 1k km's it's okay, but tiresome.
People ride this for around the world trips ! Of course highway will be a pain but you always jave the choice to not ride there and hwy is boring on all bikes. Not everyone needs a big powerful bike, regardless of how tall they are.
I end up on to many bikes to get a number wrong off the specs. I’m not to ashamed to hold that piece of paper to present the correct numbers. Realistically the only numbers on that seat that truly matter to me personally are the fuel tank size and the seat height.
Sorry I suppose the categorization or saying most women like these is wrong, but I’m basing that off my opinion based on who buys these when we have them AND who rides them into us for service.
Gear? Sure on my off time no matter what I’m in jeans and a typically a jacket. However when your making theses videos in the middle of the work day I just don’t see the need to change twice for a 20’minute ride. But hey, thank you for your concern

I think the G650fs has cast wheels.
