05 1955 Ford Panel Truck USACC - FINAL Part 05
1955 Ford Panel Truck - Part 05
This is the finished kit for the USACC 3rd Annual Group Build.
The idea for a plumbing utility van came when my 98-year old 2nd cousin
(cousin once removed) passed away. His father, my grandfathers brother,
had a plumbing business that he took over and ran until he retired. He
was a great guy and had a great sense of humor. Although his truck did not
look like this, it's something he would have loved to do as a joke. So...in
memorial to my cousin "Smokey", I created this utility van.
There is a lot I could have done better, like the paint job, but to make
the deadline there just wasn't enough time. I'm not complaining, it's on
me, I'm just saying.

Nice build Skip and great choice with a service rig!
Thanks.
Very nice Skip.. love the motor you put in…you did a great job.
Thanks. I always liked the Hemi so I thought since their making stills, they might need some HP to outrun the feds. 😂🤣
Very cool!! Love the work truck idea!! Came out awesome!
Thank you. It was a fun build.
Like seeing all the panels and pick ups did the panel my self. It works great for a pluming truck.
Thanks. Yes...it fit well with a plumbing business.
A great looking build, I did one similar a few years ago as my shop truck. Nice work on the printed decals. The ladder and tube look very realistic. Caught the message at the end, blessings to you brother.
Thanks. I put different bible passages at the end of all my videos. It's my small way of sharing the gospel of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ with some who may need to hear a Word. Hopefully it might spark an interest in them to open the Word and read about Jesus.
Great job on the truck 👍🏿
Thanks.
Turned out awesome Skip. 😎✌️
Thanks 👍 I had fun with this build.
Awesome build skip and I love the decals ❤
Thanks. I really enjoyed doing this kit.

Very well done sir !
Thank you. It was a fun build.
Turned out great Skip!!!!!!!!
Thanks Tim!! It was a fun build. Like I told some others in the community...if only I could learn how to get a good paint job with water based acrylics. 😀
@@skipsmessyworkbench 👍 🤜🤛 🙂
Turned out awesome
Nicely done
Thanks.
Looks great!!
Thanks
So cool skip! Beutiful build!
Thanks a bunch!
Nice tribute truck
I'm glad you like it. It was a fun build.
I'm really liking this build Skip. Nice little tribute to your second cousin. Boy, it would have gotten from job to job pretty quick with that Chrysler Hemi in the business end.
Thanks!! I always loved that Hemi, but now I have a '71 Cuda with no engine...um...I wonder what I'll put in the Cuda? Thanks again!!!
Check out the Iceman for a killer engine for your Cuda.
@@olezippi Already have my friend, already have.
Very nice work..
I had issues with my truck but it turned out nice after all.
Thanks. The radiator had me thinking a while as did the motor mounts, but it all worked out. Now...if only I could get a good paint job with water based acrylics.
Just found your channel, Skip! Awesome USACC build. Man, you put a lot of mods on that. Everything looks great. I love the decals to, yes. Even the wood grain. Nicely done
Thank you for your kind words. I'm happy with everything except the paint job. I just can't get good paint jobs, but I'll get there. I gave you a sub.
Sweet! I saved some of the great looking ones from the USACC build till last. Man that's a bummer about the paint! I think you can still save it tho. And either way it's gonna look good on the shelf!
Thanks. Yes, it is a bummer. My weak spot in the hobby is painting. I'm getting better, but as you can see... It's also the first time I used Vallejo Gloss Varnish (their clear coat). I should have used more thinner and I think I should have shot it at a higher psi. I live in eastern PA and if it was warm I would have sprayed Krylon Clear outside, but it's too cold to paint outside this time of the year. Anyway...thanks.
@@skipsmessyworkbench I'm new to these water based clears too, but they are very temperature sensitive. I did mine when it was 53 degrees and still had trouble. I used to live in in Ohio so I know what it's like trying to paint in the winter lol
Too funny! DP&D! Cool van buddy! This is the only utility van I’ve seen in this group build. Kinda what these panel vans were used for. Great job!
Yes. As a kid I can remember vans like this being used by contractors. I was a lot of fun.
Looks amazing. I love the humourous touches. Also the Vector wheels look great on it. I used some 3D printed Vectors on my General Lee and they look great. The crinkly paint just makes it look like an old tradesman's truck that he's painted himself to save a few bucks. The wooden floor looks nice. Not bad for a first effort. I've tried doing some wood finishes on a couple of models and they are not easy to get looking realistic. Your still is fantastic. Perfect for a moonshiner's diorama with an old truck loaded up with hooch.
Thank you for the kind words! I usually just use balsa wood for truck beds, but I wanted to try my hand at painting it. I kinda like that crinkled look, but it bothers me that I can't seem to get a smooth finish. I'll get there. Thanks again!!!
@@skipsmessyworkbench What kind of airbrush do you use? I have an old Tamiya Spray Work airbrush that did a reasonable job, but it was hard to get a smooth finish as there is no control over the pressure. I now use an SMS Dragonair, and the results are much nicer. I can do a clear coat on a car and not need to sand it at all as long as it doesn't get any significant dust on it. I have only used Vallejo paint once, on a helicopter I built. I used the acrylic Prussian Blue and it came out quite nice when thinned with isopropyl, but it didn't work well if thinned with water. It was an almost matt finish anyway, but it went on smooth (and that was with the Tamiya airbrush). It was nice paint for hand painting, but was very easy to damage. I use SMS paints now for almost everything. Their premium acrylics are acetone based and produce a very nice finish. The only problem is that they are very difficult to hand paint as they dry so fast, and being acetone based they tend to melt any other paint they touch (doesn't usually cause any problems when airbrushing). I use a few water based acrylics for touch ups, mainly black, white and a few browns for wood effects. I also use a few Tamiya lacquers for touch ups of some metallic bits and painting fiddly details on pilots.
@@davidorr6627 I use a Paasche VL-3MH Double Action Siphon feed airbrush with a Paasche D3000R compressor and regulator. The Vallejo paint went on very nice, it was their gloss varnish (clear) that caused that crinkle. It's the first time I ever used their clear and I think I should have added some flow improver to it and also, I think I had the air pressure too low and the clear was actually partially drying in the air before it got to the surface. That's a real problem with water based acrylics. I had done some test spoons and they came out fine. I'm still learning. I also like the Tamiya acrylics. They work very nice and lay down smooth, but they have to be thinned with Tamiya acrylic thinner or I get a lot of orange peel. Vallejo tells you not to use IPA for a thinner or to clean your airbrush. It causes a chemical reaction with their paint that is not good. So...when I use Vallejo, I also use their thinner, flow improver and retarder. The same goes for Tamiya. I use their products. Mission paints work well too, but they didn't have the colors I wanted and I didn't want to mix. I used to really like Testors Model Master, but we know what happened to them. If you want to brush paint with Tamiya acrylic you have to use their TAM87114 acrylic paint retarder. The paint doesn't dry as fast with the retarder and when using a brush it doesn't pick up the bottom layer. I'm learning a lot about paint chemistry and I've learned to use additives only from the paint manufacturer that I'm using. Thanks for watching. I hope this helped a bit.
@@skipsmessyworkbenchI'm surprised you had the issue with the clear coat. Maybe the colour coat wasn't completely dry. Interesting that Vallejo say not to use IPA. I found it worked perfectly. Tamiya acrylic thinner is basically IPA with a bit of other stuff as well. I do use their thinners if I'm spraying their paints, but IPA works just as well. I also use the paint retarder when brushing the Tamiya acrylics, but I have converted to their lacquer paints as I get a better finish with less problems. Still use a few acrylics for colours I can't get in the lacquer range.
@@davidorr6627 If I could vent my spray booth outside I would use lacquers. I always let my paint dry, at least 24-hours before doing anything else, so I'm sure it was dry. That's more than enough time for water based acrylics. I'm sure that I sprayed the water based acrylic clear at too low a pressure and should have used a retarder so that it didn't dry so fast. It was a great example of how water based acrylics can start drying in the air before it contact the surface being painted. That's what make the crinkle and that's also one cause for orange peel.
Skippy that turned out awesome and i love the decals and the play on the names was a cool idea... The ladder and rack was a nice add touch, So glad you got her done, I know you could do it...😁 Nice job on the exhaust system looks real. Glad you had a blast building your's like I did mine. Can't wait to see what they get us into next year...
LLAP 🖖
Thanks Bruce. It was a fun built and exercised some creative muscles I haven't used in a while. Felt good!!
That ladder and your custom decals are cool as h***. That finish looks appropriate for a work truck. Can you do a video on how you make your decals? Thanks for sharing!
Thanks. I can make that video, just give a bit of time. I use Gimp (gimp.org) for the photo editor and I print them on water slide paper in a color laser printer. But sure...I can make a video of how I do it. Thanks again.
Just found your channel and gave you a sub. Great content i look forward to following along
Thank you for your kind words and thank you for the sub.
I like your innovative approach to this build! Hand made decals look awesome! The wood grain looks great! I thought you used a wood grain decal! The roof rack and contents look very realistic!!
Thank you very much for your kind words.
