USACC 4th Annual Group Build - Part 02
My plan is to build a Late Model Dirt Track Stock Cars.
The car will be similar to one that would have raced at the original 1/2-mile
dirt track in Nazareth, PA. The track is no gone and a Chevy dealer sets on
the site of the track.
The late model stock cars were built by back yard mechanics and usually built from
a car that was found in a junk yard, collision center of a car that was totaled,
someone's back yard, etc.
The video thumbnail is a car that a very good friend of mine, Gary Metzger, and
his brother built and raced. Unfortunately we lost Gary at much too young an age.
I truly miss those days. It was fun with lots of great friends.

The '55 Chevy Stake Body is finished; at least as far as I'm concerned. I actually had a good time building this kit even with and maybe because of all the fit issues I had with it. I'm not sure if all of these kits are as bad as this one or if I got the lucky one? :-{D. I used it to test out some things that I've been wanting to try especially when it comes to rusting and weathering. I'd love ...

    Your T-Bird looks great! Your attention to detail is inspiring. I was born and raised in the central Pennsylvania area (Mechanicsburg) so I remember how hot and sticky it can get during the summers. Back in the 60's and 70's we didn't even think of having air conditioning. I moved to Arizona in '81 where air conditioning is a must. By the way, I was born in York in '55.

    Thanks for sharing. Very informative and clever approach to the electronics. I've had this kit on my shelf for quite a while. I haven't started it because I wanted to do exactly what you're doing. I've tinkered with writing code and using Arduino boards on other kits but I'm not anywhere near as experienced as you are. I plan on visiting your website to get more information. I'm looking forward to the next video in this series.

      Hi, The code on my website is not the final version(s). I'm still working on it. I have not done much lately, but I think I figured out how to get the lighting to look more real, especially the programming switches. I've also been experimenting with the mouth lighting. I have it pulsing to the sound of his voice, but I'm still working on getting the light to diffuse properly. I have the brain lighting worked out but I'd like to get those (I'll call them rods of lights) under the brain to also light. I just don't think there is enough room? I also have some ideas on getting the treads on the feet to work, but I haven't tried it yet. Anyway...The code that is currently on my website works and might be a start for you, but it's nowhere near finished. Thank you very much for watching and I hope what I'm doing will give you a kick start into your own build.

    • @tombower450
      @tombower450 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@skipsmessyworkbench You've definitely kick started my interest in doing this kit after it's collected dust on my shelf for a long time. I already had similar ideas to yours for the "body" lighting. My biggest challenge was getting the voice lights to work. I had done some research in the past to find a way to do it but never found anything I liked, until I found your approach. I was already thinking of using fiber optics for his head since there is very limited space available. I've had success in past builds using them. I usually make my builds static so I don't know if I want to do working treads but I'm interested in seeing if you can get it to work. Thanks for making all your sketches available on your website. Most people that have done electronics using Arduino boards don't like to share that information. I'm now a subscriber to your channel and looking forward to seeing all your future videos.

      Thanks for watching. The small razor saw works really well, and it's fast. I scribe the lines deeper before using the saw, that way the saw doesn't easily slip out. Round corners are than scribed through. I use a needle when scribing panel lines on aircraft. Some older kits have raised panel lines and they have to go, so I use a needle to scribe them and then sand the raised part away. I've been working on a B-24 Liberator for about two years now and keep putting aside to work on something else. 😂🤣

    • @skipsmessyworkbench
      @skipsmessyworkbench หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes...it's really only the cab that's terrible and I'm pretty sure most of that is because of old molds. Also...I'm not sure what kind of plastic it was molded in, but it didn't feel like or work like styrene. It was somewhat soft and gummy. I wanted to open some rust holes from the back side, but the plastic is so thin and gummy it just wouldn't cut through properly. I'd love to see them make fresh molds and a new design where the body is in one piece. It would also be great if the scale was 1:24/1:25. Thanks for watching.

      Thanks. I might have sounded frustrated...Okay, I was a-bit frustrated, but it actually is fun. I already have the seams taken care of. It was easy with some putty and because it's an old beat-up farm truck, I didn't have to be too fussy. The final video should be released soon. I'm experimenting how to show cracked glass for the windshield. Bryan, over at BG's Model Workshop has a good video of how he does it. And Sothern Scale Modeler (@SCM223) also has a good tutorial. You just can't have an old beat-up farm truck with a pristine windshield. 😀 Thanks for watching!!!

    I've been seeing "Scale Model Experiments" youtube channel using white glue to work on getting fit issues resolved. He then disassembles, cleans off the glue, and then re-assembles things again with more permanent glue. For someone starting this kit in the future, that method might really help in the build of this model, given all the gaps that are happening between body panels.

    • @skipsmessyworkbench
      @skipsmessyworkbench หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, yes I know about the process of using white glue for dry fitting and I also saw "Scale Model Experiments" video on using it; however, the plastic on this kit was...what I call...gummy. It is very soft. I didn't want to take the chance of doing more damage while removing the white glue. I saw the fit issues when I tape fitted the body parts. I also saw the "hpiguys" channel build this kit with similar issues but not as bad as the one I'm building; at least it wasn't as bad on camera. In my next and last video on this build you'll see that I've taken car of the gaps. I'm sure that the problem with this kit is just that the molds are very, very old. According to Scalemates they possible go back to the 1950's. Making an old farm truck with this kit will hide all the problems. If you want to build it to look like new, there will be a lot of filling. Please don't get me wrong. This is a nice kit. I've always liked Atlantis kits. It's just that, in my opinion, it's time for them to refresh their molds. I actually would love to see them or someone release this in 1:24/1:25 scale. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    They are called "stakes", Skip! Hence, the stake-body. The gate is the section that swings open.

    If this was in 1:24 or 1:25, I'd be all over it to get one. That said, I'll still watch your progress on it in this smaller scale. My family's business was trucking and we used a couple of Chevy semi-trucks of this vintage.

      Yes, I wish it was 1:24 or 1:25, but it is what it is. There's not a lot of detail. But it's a cool truck. Thanks for watching.

      I think it is? We'll see when I start getting the parts of the sprue and seeing how they go together. Atlantis kits are usually pretty good. There's not a lot of detail so I have to watch that I don't go crazy trying to add some 🤣.

    Awesome build Skippy!!! I love it...👏 I think you nailed it... I'm not the "Oh it has to be that factory color" guy! in fact I hardly pay attention to that stuff and paint it how I like so I say you did a perfect job. Besides all my tops are white because all of the 1:1 convertibles I had and my uncles were white tops... Lol Now my 40 Ford convertible Showboats top was tan because it made more sense with the Plumb paint. You might say all my paint jobs are Custom ones... LOL Gimp is a awesome program. You using it on Windows, Mac or Linux. I use it on Linux... Ramble on Skippy... 😁 We'll always be here.. LLAP 🖖 PS Loved the prospective pictures! 👍

      Thanks Bruce!!! I don't always do factory colors. It was only on this one that I wanted it factory order. Every car I ever owned, except one, was and is black. I love black cars. I had a '49 Plymouth Coupe Deluxe, a '66 Plymouth Valiant 200, '82 Dodge Challenger, '92 Mazda Portege' and now a 2010 Mazda 3; all black. My '72 Opel Manta Rally was Flame Red because I couldn't get it in Black. Oh how I loved the Opel. Best car I ever owned. I wish Opel would still import them. I use Gimp on Windows and Linux Zorin. My model shop computer runs Linux Zorin. My home office computer runs Windows because I have a couple of industrial apps that won't run on Linux. Thanks again!!!!

      @@skipsmessyworkbench I have only ever had a black pickup and it is a 2000 Mazda B2500 I got from my boss for $500 bucks 6 years ago... I have has do many cars/trucks while I love blue and green, all of them have been tan, brown, silver, red, 1 black and only 2 out of a 18+ have been blue and none of the green... Lol Mostly due to cost of them and 95% of the were not over $500 bucks... Lol Now the 2004 Buick Rainier the kids bought me 2 years ago was $20,000 bucks! 🤯🤯🤯 I didn't have that much in all the cars I ever bought all together... 🤣 Zorn is good, I started back on Linux 8 years ago with Mint and have been on Arch for 4 years now with Leftwm/Spectrwm window managers and I do everything in Linux execpt for my 3D printer software is Windows only and I have dragged it around for years from one side of the room to another until I got the 3D printer so I had to hook it up... Lol Oh while Windows has access to my local network it has not seen the internet for 3 years and will not ever again... Lol Microshaft doesn't even need to know it is alive anymore... 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Take care my friend and stay cool, the humidity is awful today! Happy Saturday! LLAP 🖖

    Nice job so far, if it helps you with the brain lights there is a company called evens designs that make very tiny z size self blinking lights, that are very nice and bright. Good luck and keep up the good work.

      Thank you! I found some 0805 size LEDs at Adafruit.com, but thanks for the lead. I went to Evan Designs website and see that they have some very interesting products, especially some the very small switches. Thanks again and thanks for watching.
