No it’s not draining it back into the clean water, Yes it does separate the two , it’s two different compartments and I showed Both and demonstrated this.
If you look at the Amazon reviews it's common problem is the mat tearing where it attaches to the head. They say it doesn't last but 9 months and it also starts to rust in side the head and in the pole.

I have one and it is a game changer, esp if you're like me and have hardwood floors. It's easy to move from room to room, I use clean water each time so I'm not just making the floors dirtier, I use mine with dawn and I NEVER see that coat of grime no matter what type of floor I'm using. Easy clean up - dump the water and launder the pad. This thing is the first great mop I've used.

Sometime suggested using a pool noodle attached to the kitchen sink faucet to fill the bucket on the floor.

If you're a short person, know that you do not need to screw all the handle sections together.
