When I watched this video, I was very moved by it. I really enjoyed the amount of care and the amount of what was "said" with their facial movements and body language. It was just so well done.
I just don't like it at all. What am I watching? A dream sequence? Why are people getting emotional over something that never happened? I like logic. Science. Facts. I like science fiction. What happens in this needs to be explained by science, or it's bogus. No way I could cry over this. It's quiet, solemn, gloomy. Gives me the creeps. Reminds me of a videogame. Real Kirk doesn't stand around quietly watching people and saying nothing. He's brimming with personality and takes charge of the situation. Real Kirk would be saying "What IS this place? YOU - who are you? I said who are you? Answer me! Is this some kind of computerized simulation? Why, that's ME! When I was captain! [laughs] Did I really look like that?"
Agree that is a major red flag, previous videos had nothing from the idiotic Kelvin timeline included. Really wish they'd stick with the ToS and early movies and that's it.
@@Scripture-Man Finally a sane person in the comments. The film was seven minutes of nothing. Just "look! It's Kirk! And Saavik! And Spock!" I don't understand why everyone's going crazy over it like it's the best thing ever.

I got 30 secs in your vid and then went to find it. For a few moments, I was genuinely happy with what I was watching. Why? WHY do these studios not understand just the love and passion for a franchise is what makes it. There is a reason why long term fans are so invested and the studios act as if that is the toxic element.

@DaveCullen For the record If you did not recognize the name, Gary Lockwood was Lt Cmdr Gary Mitchell in TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before" so there is an important tie in.
Hi I've just watched your piece on what I've watched last night. The big difference here is how they carefully put all the pieces together . BEAUTIFULLY DONE ! I LOVED IT ,IM 50 THIS YR ,STILL A STAR TREK CHILD .❤❤❤❤
Lucky me. I was born in the fifties, and I watched the first episode (The Incredible Salt Vampire) in colour at a friend's house on channel 2, WGR (now WGRZ). What a trip it's been.
That's what I'm wishing for, the young versions of these characters look amazing, the earlier videos they did with a young Spock are just stunning. That's what gets me excited. But they keep harping on recreating middle aged pudgy Kirk (he's 60+ in Generations) and very elderly Spock on his death bed, just depresses me. And it's clear to me that recreating an elderly face is still much harder than the younger face, they are not as convincing and the uncanny valley effect emerges.
This is good evidence on why it is insane that Paramount has chosen, for whatever reason, not to use Shatner in any new Star Trek productions. It's like a miracle that the first captain from the original series is still with us and healthy and still acting at 93, while so many of the original cast is now gone. And yet somehow Shatner is kept on the sidelines. It's malpractice.
@@blondeguy56 I don't think money has much to do with it. If OTOY could afford him for this, Paramount can certainly afford him for a project. It must be something else and it's a travesty.
@@SilverMachine-bm4sj Could be. I wasn’t aware of any bad blood between Shatner and Paramount, other than him complaining about the slashed budget in STV:TFF. He also refused to do a cameo in ST Enterprise’s fourth season, but I doubt that’s the real reason. Got to be something else.
Careful Mr. Cullen, you sound like I was feeling when I watched this earlier today! Yeah what a stunning piece of work and just perfect! I have watched it a few times already, and pretty sure I am going to be watching it again several more times! 🖖
I was not expecting THAT. Wow. So beautiful, and tastefully done. The accompanying music was very emotive. I was glad they didn't lean on Jerry Goldsmith or Alexander Courages' themes, for this. Also incredibly impressed they included Robin Curtis. She deserved real closure for the character of Saavik. Thanks for sharing this, Dave.
Seeing Shatner sat in the Captain's chair at the recent event at the studios in New York is so bizarre. I truly wonder what it is like for him, he sat in that chair as the iconic Captain Kirk for 3 seasons as a young man and then there he is at 93 on the replica of the bridge sat in that same chair. Imagine if he'd known as he acted on the original set that decades into the future he would be on a replica bridge engaging fans. It's almost like a time travel episode of Trek in itself!
I was 15 years old when Generations came out and I was much like you, fighting tears watching it because I know that Shatner wanted to make amends with Nimoy but they never did. Kirk certainly deserved better than to die as a joke of the bridge on the Captain. I miss those days you know.
Exactly. At the end of Generations, Kirk was dead. Shatner has lived on, and a couple of generations know him as Shatner, not just as Kirk. I am very happy for Shatner on that.
@@RickSFfan: And a couple generations know him as T.J Hooker, others as Denny Crane, others still as the Negotiator in the hilarious commercials. The Golden Globe winning actor is a legend!
He was not dead in Season 3 of Picard. He had positive life signs in that station. Also, he wouldn’t have met Saavik and Spock’s son in the afterlife. My guess is that Gary Mitchell has something to do with his resurrection.

Star Trek jumped the shark in 2009 and has never recovered... this was the first thing in 15 years that captured the spirit of what made Star Trek legendary
If you didn't see them, OTOY has a few earlier videos, extremely brief like this and with no dialogue, featuring Spock and the ToS and motion picture era. 'Memory Wall' and 'Regeneration' plus some wild screen tests with a young Spock. It looks absolutely real. www.youtube.com/@OTOY/videos
What it doesn’t incorporate: 1. Identity politics. 2. Gender ideology. 3. Female empowerment. Which is why it is great. It’s a story that pays respect to the characters and the story only adds more fully to the overall character arc of the character.
you do realize this is star trek right ? same one that had Star trek Voyager and female captins lol. and episode with Amelia air hart coming back to life
What IS the story? I was completely unable to follow what's supposed to be happening? Everyone's crying over it and I honestly have no idea what I just watched. At first I thought it's in the Nexus, but you don't cry over a dream sequence. Someone said Kirk died and he's a ghost in this, but Trek has never done supernatural fantasy so it can't be that. Dave Cullen is saying it's some kind of alternate reality but I don't understand how or why that is happening. I'm a huge Trek fan but just feel really stupid here as I seem to be the only one who can't work out what's happening without dialog.
@@stealthbrandonVoyager was never about female empowerment though. It just happened to have a female Captain who just so happened to meet one of her childhood heroes
I watched it but I kept feeling that something else was missing from all those short films....oh, I know what it is, where is Dr. Leonard H. 'Bones' McCoy (Deforest Kelly)?....he was the third part of the ST trinity after all (and even Spock mind-melded with him in Star Trek II & Bones carried Spock's Katra in Star Trek III). Kirk was the captain (the balance of the two), Spock (was the logic) and 'Bones' (was the passion). All 3 were what made Star Trek. "Damn It Bones, I need you...Badly" Kirk to McCoy - Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
Because I had this exact same feeling while watching this, I’ve made it my own personal head canon that Bones just hasn’t died yet… after all, we saw him as an old man in Encounter at Farpoint, and some of the novels show him interacting with Spock, Scotty, the TNG crew and others even during the post-Nemesis timeline, so it’s not unprecedented for him to still just be alive for a lot longer than this… So again, my personal head canon, when Bones finally does die in-universe, both Kirk and Spock are going to show up for him just like Kirk did for Spock here, and the trinity will finally be reunited at last
Strongly agree. I just wish these immensely talented people at OTOY would focus on the 1960s/70s era of Trek. It is honestly depressing seeing 'new' scenes of very elderly Spock on his death bed and old pudgy Kirk. Take another look at the earlier videos of ToS & TMP era Spock and it's breathtakingly real looking. I think the young Kirk and Gary Mitchell are the best bits of this new video. I'd love to see Bones back with them....and man will it be amazing when they get the voices to work.
I got the chance, with a small group of people, to watch the premier with William Shatner, Robin Curtis, Lawrence Selleck and most of the production crew. I think everyone was moved by what we saw and the possibilities this opens up. Mr. Shatner said “wow” and then discussed with the crowd the pros and cons of this technology. Hopefully this will continue.
I just saw the film. Wow, it was powerful. To see Jim Kirk as his younger self when he was Captain of the Enterprise. As Admiral Kirk, And then as the Kirk from Generations JAMES T. KIRK IS ALIVE!!!
As a 42-year-old grown man who has watched all the old Star Trek series (and still does), I cried. Kirk risked everything in Star Trek III to bring Spock back. He even lost David in the process. Spock meant so much more to him. Spock, being half-human, would have felt immense grief over Jim's death. And then, in the end, they reunited to explore the greatest unknown together. That was more than I ever hoped for. After the end of Picard and the "last mission" of the TNG crew, this had an even bigger emotional impact on me. Otoy achieved the impossible. This felt like the ending to their journey that they truly deserved.
Kirk saying farewell to his friend for the second and final time is so touching. It also fits as proper goodbye for the actors as well since Mr. Shatner and Mr. Nimoy didn't have that opportunity in a real world. And yes, this is the real Star Trek we all are missing so dearly.

I was eleven when I first saw the original series. Time has passed me by.. Great video and this production has moved me to tears.
Bring back McCoy
Nutrek should never be considered canon
amen, they destroyed Trek legacy with post ST Enterprise Trek(on purpose)
It’s not
@@johnpaulporrelli6208 It is to some people, apparently :/
Lower decks is great the rest I can live without
@DD8842 Ew
When I watched this video, I was very moved by it. I really enjoyed the amount of care and the amount of what was "said" with their facial movements and body language. It was just so well done.
Watched it! Loved it! Thank you for sharing this
It choked me up. So beautiful 🥺
Amazing. Absolutely amazing. See what CAN be done?? Thanks for bringing this to my attention, Dave.
The moment i heard the words "a character from Discovery" i checked out.
its not really a character, more of an easter egg.
Thank you for putting this video out. I shall be looking at it.
It was amazing and very respectful to have Kirk resurrected in a way that was poignant and brought his and Spock’s arc to a closure - Not afraid to say, I cried a little because how lovingly it was handled and presented - Having Kirk not saying anything, makes his expressions his dialogue ❤️
I got 30 secs in your vid and then went to find it. For a few moments, I was genuinely happy with what I was watching. Why? WHY do these studios not understand just the love and passion for a franchise is what makes it. There is a reason why long term fans are so invested and the studios act as if that is the toxic element.
How did you watch this? Only the teaser is on OTOY TH-cam channel
Thank you for sharing this. I went and watched it. It brought tears to my eyes.
Just watched it. I was in tears! It was SO good!
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. The short is glorious!
When I see these images, I'm reminded of a time when TV and film was exciting, fantastical, inspiring, optimistic and had a certain magic.
Then I wonder how we ended up with what we have today 😢.
I think someone screwed with the timeline.
There only missing one other person MCcoy, omg how could they had forgotten him...
not forgotten but you have to have family permission to do his likeness. . They respected him enough not to do with out family
I didn’t know Unification had been released on Monday because my day was beyond busy. I didn’t get to watch it until Tuesday morning and wasn’t prepared for the emotions I experienced. It was absolutely beautiful and the perfect way to start my day.
I watched the short movie because of this video. I loved it! It was very well done!! (Just 12 days ago I was holding the hand of someone very close to me who passed away in a hospice.) This movie really moved me. It's something you never forget, being with someone you love when it's their time to go. Well done!
@DaveCullen For the record If you did not recognize the name, Gary Lockwood was Lt Cmdr Gary Mitchell in TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before" so there is an important tie in.
I’ll need to watch this. Thanks for the tip.
Shout out to ROBIN CURTIS returning as SAAVIK.
Hi I've just watched your piece on what I've watched last night.
The big difference here is how they carefully put all the pieces together . BEAUTIFULLY DONE !
I LOVED IT ,IM 50 THIS YR ,STILL A STAR TREK CHILD .❤❤❤❤
So glad that George Takei wasn’t involved in this.
He's in a corner somewhere doing his own version of Star Trek 2: "Truuuuuuummmmmmpppp!"
Saying: "Well-heh-llllooooooh"
Would have been something if Shatner and Takei used this project to reconcile, maybe a shot with the OG crew in someway !
Hes vile. They all are. I had to remove them all from social media cos they were making me HATE watching classic Trek
It's actually sad he couldn't have, but he has gone over the rainbow.
Lucky me. I was born in the fifties, and I watched the first episode (The Incredible Salt Vampire) in colour at a friend's house on channel 2, WGR (now WGRZ). What a trip it's been.
The TOS Kirk looked so good, if this was how they rebooted Trek I'd be very interested.
Yeah, they got facial expressions right. That reflection scene was powerful.
Wasn’t prepared for this when I viewed it yesterday. Genuinely moved to tears.
They probably can’t afford him….and he knows it.
Got to be something else.
easy
bad writing
that is why
Thanks
The interview with William Shatner was wonderful, too!
Thank you so much for this!
The music too was beautiful!!!
What an absolutely beautiful production. What a great surprise.
And I'm betting he looked like he belonged there, and that you could see him saddling up one more time.
That video was awesome, and didn't know about it until you posted this video. Amazing. Thanks for that!
Nice, to include Spock's one lifted eyebrow - and the IDIC medallion on the nightstand 😊
Thanks for the headsup Dave! Really appreciate it. This is going to make a certain trekky in my family so happy.
Seeing old Robin Curtis makes me feel old...damn, i need some Romulan Ale.
Thanks for sharing this. Very very cool.
Heroes get remembered. Legends live long and prosper. ;)
I'm sitting here at work with tears in my eyes. This is beautiful!
This was so special. I also thought the Vulcan behind Saavik was Spock's son, since they did the Pon Farr on Genesis.
Just watched it, amazing!
Where???
I was 15 years old when Generations came out and I was much like you, fighting tears watching it because I know that Shatner wanted to make amends with Nimoy but they never did. Kirk certainly deserved better than to die as a joke of the bridge on the Captain. I miss those days you know.
A moment of light in a very dark present day.
I took it as Kirk was dead and visiting Spock as he died
@@Robman0908 Lets be honest he fell of a mountain had a bridge fall on him and was buried for a while . Even if the 23 century science could reanimate the body ,the mind /soul would be gone
@ Not really if a part of him is still alive in the Nexus. A god like Mitchell could pull him out.
I sat with my mouth open like a little kid for 8 minutes. The genuine emotion i felt watching it...i have no words.
Thank you for letting me know about this....
What it doesn’t incorporate:
1. Identity politics.
2. Gender ideology.
3. Female empowerment.
Which is why it is great.
It’s a story that pays respect to the characters and the story only adds more fully to the overall character arc of the character.
Feminazis are Liars and sneaky.
Down with WOKE. It was always broke.
? Didn't You watch it 😅
you do realize this is star trek right ? same one that had Star trek Voyager and female captins lol. and episode with Amelia air hart coming back to life
What IS the story?
Time for tears and heartfelt thanks.
"Damn It Bones, I need you...Badly" Kirk to McCoy - Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
family has to Ok it. that why nimoy wife was a exec prod.
Because I had this exact same feeling while watching this, I’ve made it my own personal head canon that Bones just hasn’t died yet… after all, we saw him as an old man in Encounter at Farpoint, and some of the novels show him interacting with Spock, Scotty, the TNG crew and others even during the post-Nemesis timeline, so it’s not unprecedented for him to still just be alive for a lot longer than this…
So again, my personal head canon, when Bones finally does die in-universe, both Kirk and Spock are going to show up for him just like Kirk did for Spock here, and the trinity will finally be reunited at last
Strongly agree.
This is a great, unexpected, gift! How awesome of them to release this!
This is the Nexus...the Vulcan behind Saavik is Spock's son when Saavik helped Spock get through Pon Farr in The Search For Spock.
That's wild that vulcans can conceive just by stroking each other's finger 😉
Ya know i really appreciate your appreciation for what this team has done ☺
How cool they brought back Robin Curtis as Saavik, nice.
It is truly amazing Dave, reading some of comments on the TH-cam page are truly emotional. Loved it, no words needed ❤
I'm not crying, you're crying! 😢
It's just raining!
Typical human reaction, Captain😉
Young man I was born a year and two months before TOS ended. I fell in love with it in syndication. That was amazing......
Wow, I'm definitely going to have to check this out & share it w/ my Trekkie friends/family. Much appreciated! 🖖
The saving grace of AI - it keeps old school Star Trek alive.
At 74 I am a trekkie through and through. I watched it all from Star Trek original. This is wonderful to hear. Thankyou all.
I just saw the film.
Wow, it was powerful.
To see Jim Kirk as his younger self when he was Captain of the Enterprise.
As Admiral Kirk,
And then as the Kirk from Generations
JAMES T. KIRK IS ALIVE!!!
Just loved it.
You forgot to mention Gary Mitchell at the beginning, and when Kirk meets Saavik, that’s Spock’s son and Saavik is him mother 🧐
