You take out Trump, so I hope you help Christian voters know who to vote for. Who is the presidential candidate who will be respected by world leaders at a time in history. Do you reveal that person in your book? It's not a religious battle. It is political. Are they intersecting NOW when it has't been much of an issue for a very long time. Who can fill the shoes of both sides of this coin?

“It was miraculous. It was almost no trick at all, he saw, to turn vice into virtue and slander into truth, impotence into abstinence, arrogance into humility, plunder into philanthropy, thievery into honor, blasphemy into wisdom, brutality into patriotism, and sadism into justice. My brother or sister, a Christian is a follower of what Almighty God in JesusChrist do, not what men do....
      Satan got men going to a building called church, God in JesusChrist created man to be the church;
God in JesusChrist is from heaven, and came to save, deliver, set his people free from the things of this world, the traps of Satan:
Like the false church, building worships, and all other things of man; sports, entertainment industry, music industry, hospitals......

But at this point I now assume it's anyone who doesn't love Trump like they do... which would include all Dems, most Independents and a lot of Republicans too... (I'm a card carrying Independent, so yes, I would be a target, along with a whole lot of other people I know) Yeah, me heartbroken too - and 'what the hell is wrong with these people' is my cry as well. The whole "camps" thing is so bizarre...
      1. I know a wide variety of people... I know Dems/liberals/progressives/athietsts etc... and NEVER have I heard them want to throw Christians or GOPers or evangelicals into camps... but as you testify here, it seems to be a thing among these far right christians! They want to round up people and put them into camps! And sometimes they might say it kind of joking like, but I'm inclined to take them seriously
      2. This is coming from the same people who yelled and screamed about "death camps" when Obamacare was being debated... and none of them seems to have a clue about their own self-irony
      3. And this comes from a group of people who are super sensitive about being labeled racists and Nazis! - Yet this "we'll send you to the camps" keeps slipping out of their mouths... How stupidly un-self-aware does one have to become to do this?

    • @old_grey_cat

It reminded me of "The Nazi theodicy demanded the existence of an Enemy..." (Poliakov, Harvest of Hate: The Nazi Program for the Destruction of Jews in Europe. Available in the Internet Archive.) : fascism, including Christofascism, being structured on fear of/ disgust at The Other, and worshipful belief in a powerful and protecting human Leader / Party, needs a target to both fear for its strength and despise for its weakness - and, inevitably, to hate.
When the Christian Nationalists fit themselves to the 14 aspects of fascism, they left no room for the God of Love, the one who saw the despised Samaritans as his neighbours. They need to hate the Other, and trust the Party, even if it means ignoring the evidence of their personal experiences. Like the Inquisition, they will torture the Other "to save their souls."
I hope the madness does not break America before the nation finds a cure. China and BRICS will cheer on the collapse.

@scottwebster Precisely my own recollection of the timeframe. My family were members of West Hunter Street Baptist since the 1920s, all officers of the church when Rev. Ralph Abernathy became its pastor. Following Dr. King’s death, church, as I’d always understood it, remained the same-until the Age of Jim & TammyFaye Baker, as I call it. Subtle changes, initially, but by the time the 700 Club, Pat Robertson & TBN, TCN, Daystar, etc., launched, a full-blown cavalcade march to materialism, stardom of “ministers,” skirting of accountability, ostentatious excess, & secular entertainment was already streaming in to the former traditional church!! Add in the money being garnered by Kenneth Copeland, Creflo Dollar (Copeland’s sidekick), TD Jakes & others on the touring circuit at the time, & virtually overnight by 1987-88, you couldn’t FIND a church not on its way to “megachurch” status anywhere inside cities. [Ironically, I actually believe I coined that phrase, myself. “Church” had been a fairly small world until that point.] The fearmongering over “the endtimes” drove numbers of the newly-converted through the roof! All the way up until-Y2K didn’t happen in 2000. I thought they’d go back to sanity then, but no. “Church” just got worse. Issuing directives on who to vote for from the pulpit. Touting political candidates as if they were ministers themselves by running for office. Even taking pages from Pat Robertson’s book & twisting the elbows of the flock to back their own campaigns. All other chicanery & snake-oil sales followed suit in rapid succession after that. I left church & joined a dojo instead by 1993 myself, though I continued to visit many churches-with the same bad taste in my mouth after being shamelessly shaken-down for offering after offering & watching limos, Benzes, HumVees pull out of the parking lot. Throw in the music & I might as well have been leaving nightclubs & party spots for all the “spiritual teaching” anybody got out of that.
Needless to say, having remained too close for comfort to a number of local churches, I now recognize most as cults because that is factually how many function. Hostages making grand displays of soup lines or food giveaways, with nothing but ministerial McMansions to show for all the plate-passing they’ve been doing for just about 40 years now. NO community surrounding any of them has improved in any way at their impetus. Not one. If anything, in disadvantaged neighborhoods they are a parasite, draining cash away to fund lavish living done by the clergy-not even the members. The same conditions on the ground Christ is said to have detested among temple clergy of that era 2,024 years ago.
“WWJD” has been forgotten now, but I still wonder. Especially seeing his own community environs being eviscerated by war, the people he himself would have known as neighbors & countrymen still living under hostile occupation & militarized zoning, based on race, as then, by a different empire-concept but even more cruelly today.
So much for religion. There’s only one remaining in practice, by all evidence: Systemic Injustice, on-tap, at all times, globally. ⚖️🌲🕯🌲🕯🌲🕯🌲🕯🌲🕯🌲🕯⚖️

OMG, you have hit home with Jerry Falwell and Liberty. I lived all my 68 years until the last 4 in Central Virginia. My first girlfriend's father was completely brainwashed in 1974 by all this. My family was Episcopalian. In tgat year, while I was still in high school, I went to Liberty Baptist church with my gf and her dad. They had a guest speaker that day. In his sermon, he listed all the Christian denominations who were going to hell, including my own. I was in shock, we had the same Bible in the pews. We took communion, etc. I was just a teenager, but it totally changed my political and religious views. For years, I never voted for a candidate, I voted against whomever Falwell told his people to vote for. Liberty University in later years was tyrannical. When I left 4 years ago, one of their employees told me they had so much money, it was hard to spend it. They were buying properties all over Lynchburg and Campbell County. Building horse stables, houses, camps, etc. They bought an entire mountain. Because of my life in that area with such religious hypocrisy, I no longer consider myself to be a religious person. I suppose I am agnostic. If a teenager can understand the hypocrisy , why not adults. How can they be so fooled?

I’d wager that GOD protects children but once you choose evil you are on your own. And GOD is a CHOICE God. Throughout the Bible, GOD says CHOOSE. I grew up in an African American Baptist church and a Lutheran church. I ultimately left the Lutheran Church because as an adult I realized they didn’t COMPREHEND their own teaching of the Holy Spirit😏. I later realized that most church folk don’t STUDY the Bible with HELP of THE HOLY SPIRIT in them either. I was fortunate that I listened and learned to study the Bible for myself with the help of the Holy Spirit. I found the Trinity truly important in understanding GOD’s Power. GOD, the Father LOVES us unconditionally, Jesus, GOD in human form SAVED is from ourselves and THE HOLY SPIRIT, the presence of GOD placed in us to help us be Who GOD wants us to be. And GOD desires us to be Lovers of Mankind AND Helpers to ALL. I don’t believe You are an agnostic but a child of the MOST High GOD❣️. To simplify it even further… consider what the ‘lawlessness’ is in the sense of the man of lawlessness… Satan was called a ‘murderer’ for lying/deceiving man, not for actually ‘killing’ their flesh… hence the spiritual nature of the death… Satan literal means ‘accuser’, ‘slanderer’, ‘opposer’…. Consider for a moment how trump came into power. He used the power of ‘slander’, ‘accusing’ all who would stand in ‘opposition’ to him… he didn’t rely on any virtue or decent skill with which to judge properly how to lead or convince his audience, merely manipulating them by telling them what they wanted to hear (flattery), bribing them and lying to them (‘I alone can fix’, ‘I am the chosen one’, etc.). Dan 8:23 “In the latter part of their reign, when rebels have become completely wicked, a fierce-looking king, *_a master of intrigue_* will arise. 24 He will become very strong, *_but not by his own power_* . He will cause astounding devastation and will succeed in whatever he does. He will destroy those who are mighty, the holy people. 25 *_He will cause deceit to prosper and he will consider himself superior_* ...” -niv

I feel less alone listening to Tim and reading the comments! Tim's voice is so needed. My husband and I found it too hard to go back to our church but recently found a very progressive church that we are hopeful we will find a home in. I had never thought about how today's church has failed a similar test that Jesus went through, when Jesus was being tempted by Satan saying he'd give Jesus the world if he would worship him. So many in the church have chosen hate, harshness, lack of compassion, money and power over all that Jesus taught. Good to hear that there are youth who are reading the "words in red" in the Bible and are responding.

This was a very important dialogue, one I take personally. My brother's wife went down to Virginia for Christian "counseling" in the mid-1980's in Falwell-land and came back with an agenda. Over time she managed to separate my brother from my mother and me, lied, etc. and her raised her kids the same way. Ultimately, my mother and I moved out of state because we were "cut out" of the family and they showed very little respect to my late mother. They took the money and ran when she died. At this point, I consider them as strangers and have drawn the line on the "gaslighting" we endured for 30+ years.

    Here's the irony...
In the late 1970s and into the 1980s, the GOP fully adopted the then fringe ideology of anti-New Deal
(FDR introduced the New Deal to save capitalism, which under the Robber Barons was crushing Americans. There was serious interest by Americans in jettisoning capitalism for communism. FDR created a managed capitalism that worked for the average American (problems, of course, but restrained the ultra wealthy and corporations), which re-instilled a belief in capitalism amongst the people.
The anti-New Deal GOP in the 1980s believed only a few (the ultra wealthy) should govern and laws and the tax code should funnel money to them. Their platform was:
    1. No business regulations (more profit)
    2. No taxes on the wealthy and corporations (more profit).
They knew they couldn't sell this to average American, and they they couldn't win votes.
    So they promoted culture wars
to distract voters aways from their extractive economic policies,
and to focus voters on "them causing all the problems" (jews, women, African Americans, gays. .... anyone not like "us".)
Now the GOP is reaping what it sowed. It sowed hate and conflict for the sole reason that they wanted to make more profits.
Now those hate groups, sired by the Republicans, run the GOP.
All for the sake of money.

(They take the “he died for our sins” as a guarantee that they’ll be ok.) But they ignore that “the devil” is guaranteed “his pound of flesh”. The sins Jesus died for are not “deals with the devil.” That “contract” isn’t covered by Jesus.

What Trump and the religions right coupled with the youth of today have shown me is that people don't need to believe in a higher power to do what is right or to serve others. It's actually easier to forgiving and giving when you don't live in fear of condemnation. Since leaving the church and the Republican party it's been so much easier to be a conservative and help others. This interview was great. It reminded me of a time of less harsh judgement from the church. I will need to read the book. I'm sure it will give me some great insights to these people's belief system so I can better serve them.

It’s a far rewarding grift than 10 years of sweat & toil of medical school.. CONSTANTLY studying and working in IT (where I am) and in an ever changing environment of technology all a pastor has to do is read the Bible. No code to write, study etc just a very old book 📕 that NOTHING has changed in. Same with the Koran.
These two religions will be found to be the greatest CON of humankind. And as I say this I believe in God .. Religiosity, with all it is said to entail, is not part of Trump's character. His character is instead exactly as described by this text by Nate White, an articulate and witty writer from England, answering the question *"Why do some British people not like Donald Trump?"* - sentiments shared by *people around the world* in general:
“A few things spring to mind. Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem. For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace; all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed. So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump’s limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief.
Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing. Not once, ever. I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever.
And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility. For us, to lack humour is almost inhuman. But with Trump, it’s a fact. He doesn’t even seem to understand what a joke is. His idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty.
Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs; he only crows or jeers. And scarily, he doesn’t just talk in crude, witless insults, he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness.
There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It’s all surface. Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront. Well, we don’t. We see it as having no inner world, no soul.
And in Britain we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist. Trump is neither plucky, nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that. He’s not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat. He’s more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege.
And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully. That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms into a snivelling sidekick instead. There are unspoken rules to this stuff, the Queensberry rules of basic decency, and he breaks them all. He punches downwards, which a gentleman should, would, could never do, and every blow he aims is below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or voiceless, and he kicks them when they are down.
So the fact that a significant minority, perhaps a third, of Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think ‘Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy’ is a matter of some confusion and no little distress to British people, given that:
    - Americans are supposed to be nicer than us, and mostly are.
    - You don’t need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man.
This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss. After all, it’s impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss.
He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of shit. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum. God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid. He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart.
In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws, he would make a Trump. And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumps of hair and scream in anguish: ‘My God, what have I created?’
If being a twat was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set.”

They were treated like kings and fed Qanon theory to go home and preach. They came home and bought weapons for the first time and started teaching prepping skills to his congregation. Overtime my Uncle came to understand he had been tricked when none of the Qanon deadlines came true. Saw the rhetoric of DJT and had the experience of growing up through WW2.
