Totally agree with your summation re how good it will be to watch , I expect it to be a close contest , PIF is once again setting the bar for how golf can be better packaged
I am a long time golf fan and I went to LIV Valderrama, I've been to many top level golf tournaments to over the years and I can say unequivocally that LIV Valderrama was the best run and most fun tournament I've been to as a fan. I also went to the Solhiem and while the golf was great, the organisation of the tournament for the fans was appalling. I am definitely going back to a LIV tournament whenever I get the opportunity.
Another insightful commentary on the LIV play-in tourney. Very well explained to the viewing audience. As Lou Gehrig and Tom Brady have demonstrated sometimes for greatness to reveal itself the opportunity has to present itself first then the future can be in your own hands. The young Asian golfers are amazing in their prowess. LIV is an international tour produced for an international audience, not the USA audience solely.
Agreed Robert. An influx of billions into pro golf is a miracle opportunity for players the world over. And some consider this a “crisis”. Imagine a sport where the players organize to reject being paid more money / more revenue share - we can’t.
The PGAT LIV haters are NOT golf fans...just haters...In Soccer and cricket at point in time there are different events happening all over the world...now three different formats in Cricket..from 5 day tests to 4 hour matches....its called entertainment
Agree, cricket is a good metaphor. Tests, ODIs, T20s and stuff like the Hundred. What also makes it interesting is that each format has their own world ranking (teams and players). I'm not suggesting LIV has a seperate ranking but there could be a case for giving different weightings to a 54 hole event rather than exclude it
@@Kid_Senekal I think there's also a case for having a 54 hole major with 48 players The caveat being, no exemptions into the final 48. They can have 36 holes of pre-qualifying to cut it down from 500 to around 150 and another 36 holes of qualifying to cut it down from 150 to 48. There could be 20 or so exemptions handed out to the final 36 holes of qualifying and this could be televised
@@Kid_Senekal There could be a case for that, but the OWGR doesn't follow it (for sanctioned events). Recently, the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on the Euro tour went only 54 holes due to weather delays. It received the full OWGR points based on strength of field - that is, the points weren't prorated to reflect the shortening of the event.
@@andreastusch2526 Don't believe the propaganda, everyone and their mother-in-laws on the Asian Tour want to play and they will be very very happy if they get one of the spots I remember the excitement in International Series England last year when players were vying for a spot in the first LIV event If enough people from USA/Western Europe/Japan/Korea are dissuaded from playing through political means, LIV will invite more and more players from Asia/South Africa/Australasia to ensure a full field in the Promotions Event
Haotong Li would be nuts not to play in this event Byeong-hun An and C.T. Pan would be "very likely" Gary Woodland, Daniel Berger, I can definitely see it happening They always have the option of playing and using a top 3 spot as leverage to get a bonus from the PGA Tour
1. The PGA Tour is a meritocracy. It is intended to be performance based to remain on the tour, not necessarily be guaranteed to provide you a safety net unless you earn your way into that position. With LIV, those guarantees are front-loaded. This tournament merely provides another avenue to that guarantee with little to no criteria.
If any of the three winners are rookies, they will also get awesome exposure and close contact in 2024 to some of golf’s superstars and top pros through the team that drafts them…
3. Yes, pro golf has always been different with its 'independent contractor' status for the players. With contracts, you remove the pressure of having to perform. A player can literally finish last in every LIV event and still earn over $1m for 14 events. The contracts remove the incentive to perform at the highest level.
Hey guys, the full field of the PGA is 156 players. The LIV qualifier is ONLY going to advance 3, that's 3, players into LIV. What does the PGA have to lose? Nothing, nada, zilch!!! If you're not among the top 70 players in the PGA that puts you in the lower 86 which will be like no-man's land in the PGAT. If you come in at 48th place in a LIV Tournament you take home $120,000. Yep, you read that right, $120,000. If I'm in the lower 86 I'm definitely giving it a shot for one of the three slots.
It's interesting, I wonder how much LIV is currently losing annually in an effort to compete. Between the buying of stars, the lack of a real TV contract and the nominal attendance, the subidies from the Saudi's must be significant.
Opinions on a new challenge to the PGA are as varied as there are tour members. LIV only has one real knock according to the majority opinions, and that's the source of funding. The PGA hoped this venture would be a total flop, but hedged their bets by threatening sanctions against players who joined. Not sure what they're afraid of, as there are hundreds and hundreds of golfers with the skill set to play professionally. I believe Mickelson called them out good and proper when he challenged them to open their books and tell the truth about how much is coming in vs going out. They obviously did not want those numbers revealed. Now, you have the PGA copycatting LIV in certain formats, which makes the PGA look foolish. Variety is the spice of life, and LIV is providing good golf and good entertainment. They bloodied their nose , so to speak, breaking through the wall of the old and noble PGA, but the competition and extra opportunities to play professionally should be welcomed, not condemned.
It will be interesting to see how many players outside of the Top 70 on the PGA Tour decide to try their hand at this. I' suspect there will be a few surprising names on the list - especially seeing there is no penalty for playing in the event.
I think JT will receive a contract offer I expect a few from inside the top 70 to give it a go Kevin Kisner would be an intriguing name, he's exempt into the 2nd round
It will be very, very interesting to see what names will show up. I don´t think the statment "players that havent won anything" going to be quit true. I will be glued to the screen at it´s even free to watch. Even the trolls will be watching...
Right now Cricket world cup on in India....90-100k crowd every match....they play day/night matches...awesome,,, daily viewers would be in the many millions.
I cant wait to see what happens when the oil money dries up and eventually it will go away, whether it be for economical or political reasons. I thought John Goldfarb was hilarious but this will be even better.
2. If golf takes away the downside/failure, guaranteeing access to the highest levels of the game, it dilutes the overall product, making it less entertaining.
