Not sure where you got that definition from, but if your final paragraph is correct fetuses would be alive by definition. Fetuses can indeed feel, and can recognize voices from in the womb. That it would constitute as experience. If you mean experiences we can remember that would apply all the way up to 2 years. Perhaps you mean only first trimester abortions?

We do generally support the obligation of Parenthood via child support laws and child negligence laws. We all do unpaid labor, all the time, every day of our lives. To define that as slavery would makes us all slaves.
Would abortion be considered murder if we discover that fetuses can feel pain? Is that the determining factor? Are fetuses dead in the womb or is there another term between dead and alive that you would use?
@@milesmungo Even if you consider abortion murder, it is not child sacrifice. Child sacrifice has a specific ritual meaning which is not in any way related to abortions.
And when you say more than ever, are you talking about the US, world wide or what? The number of abortions today in the US is only about half of what it was in the 80s and 90s. Globally, it's not as big of a decline but a slight one so you're wrong anyway (if you weren't talking about some other restricted geographical region).

I find Harris does too. Peterson uses 100 words to describe something incredibly vague and unclear, then consistently Harris concisely sums it up in five words. And then it becomes apparent how vapid or outright wrong what Peterson said was.

For the life of me, I just don't understand how Jordan Peterson was able to capture such a wide audience with nothing more than vague, and eventually, meaningless palaver. I'm guessing that he took a "political" stand that a segment of the population bought hook line and sinker, and tried to parlay that audience into thinking he was actually saying something. Jordan Peterson should be a reminder on just how easily people can be duped.

Can we take a second to acknowledge the fact that most of the arguments Jordan can come up with in favour of religion is that it’s useful - the implication being that we should believe things that aren’t true just because they’re useful
Peterson is a philosophical Pragmatist. He believes that what is useful is true, but not necessarily true in a scientific sense because there is a hierarchy of "truths". Well there's a lot more to it than that but it would take more than a couple of lines in a youtube comment to explain.

A chair in a room exists independently from observation, a rock is a rock independent from human conceptualizations etc. I'm not entirely sure I understand how a useful falsity becomes truthful, I can't even imagine a situation where thats possible.

Particularly, I sense that they wish to, understandably but in a juvenile manner, distance themselves from Jordan Peterson. I'd suggest that Peterson doesn't believe in God any more now than he ever did. He just knows his audience and is all about brand image now. He knows that espousing Christian beliefs (regardless of how truthful they are) will make him more popular for right-leaning audiences. This generates content views, invites to debates, etc, all of which drive profit.
If you listen to Jordan more you'll find out that he, as far as I can understand, has always believed in god. He thinks that we all believe in god and I agree with him. The things that you think are desirable and which are avoidable are, after all, arbitrarily defined. The good you think you're striving for is the god Jordan refers to.

Ever strive for anything in your life that wasn't just to make a god proud? Ever learned anything just for your own sake? Or is everything you do just you boosting your worth in the eyes of god?
Most people in the less faith-driven nations in the world spend zero time placating gods.
You have an extremely narrow view of human nature, as does Jordan. That's why you push your own ego onto others. Not everyone is like you. Mostly submissive people have the mindset that you have. People with actual strength don't need, nor do they feel he presence of gods. They don't need the approval of spirits, they don't need any level of magic in their lives at all.
Thinking that everyone believes in god is WAAAAAY too muslim-like for me. It's pure nonsense. Stop trying to understand others by imposing your own ego onto them. Instead, learn from other people who have zero faith. Maybe you'll snap out of your own delusions at some point. Having no faith and believing in no gods is totally fine and works really well. Empathy derived intuitive morality will always serve a person better than trying to live by the will of gods. It also makes it easier to understand other people without imposing your own ego on them.

What seems strange to me is that God supposedly waited at least 4000 years before deciding to save mankind from the penalty of the sin that he set up Adam & Eve to commit. There is nothing about the Abrahamic fables that makes any sense except as a means to control those who are too intellectually lazy to think for themselves.
There is an answer for this when you understand why Adam and Eve sinned. It was a challenge from Satan - that man can be happier away from God. If you destroy everyone and restart, you leave that question hanging out there.

In time Jordan will be most criticised by theists. Atheism, for instance, takes no issue with the utility of fiction. At bottom, Jordan’s arguments oppose theism & support atheism. He is, in a way, doing atheists a favour (& he, Jordan, does’t know it).

It gets worse for the religious everyday. How do billions of people believe in something they have never seen, met, had a response from and it determines their lives? People really are baffling
People are submissive and pathetic and they know it, bowing their heads to gods and nonsense is natural for some. They want to make simplistic order out of complex chaos, and religion offers that. They want a sense of purpose in their meaningless lives, religion offers that. They want to learn the difference between good and bad without using empathy or judgement, and religion offers a set of rules that tells them who to love and who to hate, then gives justifications for why that hatred is OK and they give them an out for all the evil deeds they do: Prayer.
It's a pretty sweet deal. Do all the evil you want as long as you get a "sorry for my sins, god!" on your way out.
It's a perfect system for people who want to take no responsibility for their actions. It's a perfect system for pathetic submissive filth.

Uncommitted Religious sentiment will always fail in its effectiveness towards sustainability of the cultures it represents. Not being able to take that stand (for so many obvious reasons) just can't get it done. You know what all this reminds me of? Remember when that #1 boxer and that #1 ufc fighter acted like they hated each other, but really, they were working together to sell their fight? I don't know how many times he actually debated each of these guys, but it does make for engaging content, whether you think Peterson is full of shit or a genius. I'll give you the secret key that unlocks Jordan's points. We atheists sin "miss the mark" because we close our minds off to anything not measurable or tangible. The secret is it's the metaphor of the Biblical story that's the true meaning. "God" is life itself. When you feel driven or called to do something like start a business or non-profit, you could describe that as "the voice of God". When your intuition is telling you to do or not do something, you can say that's "God/universe/celestial consciousness speaking to you. What all of these comments have in common is you dismiss the meaning, the moral of the story as it were, and his point that we as humans see life through the lense of story. When someone asks you how you are, why you did X, the purpose of Y, you answer with a story. The Biblical stories aren't meant to be true in the literal sense or factual, they're meant to be how people over centuries turned the experience of being human into a metaphorical story. I too used to be as close minded as most of you. You're limiting your own capacity for deeper understanding of the overall point of being itself. As far as the word salad argument, if you actually know what the words mean it's easy to understand what he's saying. Ones lack of vocabulary isn't an indictment on what someone else is saying. Lastly, there is not ever going to be a concrete answer to abstract questions like morality, meaning, purpose, etc. It's far too subjective to have a definitive answer for abstract things like some equation you can point to for these human experiences. What you all miss again and again is that Jordan's arguments and point are in the abstract and Sam's are also or trying to be concrete, and those definitions cannot always coexist.

You guys know that conversations like this are always subjective and no one is technically more correct, it’s just two points of view substantiated by the limited view of a human mind, which is very limited indeed. They both are using words to procure a subjective idea, both paths leading to the same place, which is there are things that we should or shouldn’t do, in many but not all circumstances. Neither of them are hitting some sort of universal slam dunk here. God or not god, atheist or religious, it doesn’t matter. Your high horse perspective is just as a limited as the ones you abhor.
Let's use that logic. Two people have a debate about whether Harry Potter exists or not. One side believes he's just an idea that was made up. The other side makes the claim that any idea thought up are just events that have happened or will happen in the universe. Both sides are subjective truths, but one is obviously more likely and accepted than the other. The idea of a "God" is a placeholder for a lack of knowledge. Humans will never find the correct answer if we assume we have the answer already.
According to the Bible, Jesus wasn't sacrificed. If he, being also God, knew he was coming back from the dead, it boils down to a shitty weekend and the payoff was getting to be vice governor of the universe. I would take that deal every single time.
Peterson is no match for Harris.
I can think of a much better extreme illustration of delayed gratification: you slave away at a terrible abusive job your entire life until you die at age 100, and then you get some kind of heavenly reward after all that slave work. That's much more illustrative of delayed gratification. Peterson isn't reasoning from these ideas into a narrative which illustrates them, he's reasoning backwards from his favorite narrative he already has (Christianity).
Sam explains beautifully the fallacy of < post hoc ergo procter hoc >. Just as it is a fallacy to conclude that the sun comes up because the rooster crows, it is also a fallacy to conclude that we understand the importance of delayed gratification because children were sacrificed to God

It's telling that Peterson, when asked if a previous exchange if"God" exists, defaults to the word salad bullshit of "It depends on what you mean by "God". Then here he throws around "good life" and "bad life" as if they are hard facts.
